Statistics service says #Ethiopia’s inflation falls to lowest level since 2019 as birr suffers sharpest loss of purchasing power

Ethiopia’s annual headline inflation rate dropped to 10.9% in November 2025, the lowest level recorded since February 2019, according to new data released by the Ethiopian Statistical Service (#ESS). The report was published in the same month the birr experienced what analysts described as the steepest loss of purchasing power in the country’s history.

According to the ESS, November’s inflation figure marks a decline from 11.7% in October, continuing a six-month disinflationary trend. The slowdown was largely driven by a sharp deceleration in non-food inflation, which fell to 11.4% in November from 14.2% the previous month.

Food inflation, however, edged upward, rising to 10.6% in November from 10.2% in October. The ESS attributed the increase to higher ...

#Rwandan-backed rebels push toward strategic town in new offensive in eastern #Congo

Rwandan-backed rebels pushed into the outskirts of the strategic city of Uvira in eastern Congo on Tuesday, local authorities said, as part of a new offensive that the U.N. says has displaced more than 200,000 residents in recent days.

The latest offensive by the Rwandan-backed M23 rebel group comes despite a U.S.-mediated peace agreement signed last week by the Congolese and Rwandan presidents in Washington.

The accord did not include the rebels, who are negotiating separately with the Congo and agreed earlier this year to a ceasefire that both sides accuse the other of violating, but it obliges Rwanda to halt support for armed groups and work to end hostilities.

Marafiki Masimango, a representative of Uvira civil society, said rebels were pushing south into the South Kivu province city late Tuesday and that some of government .....

Commissioner Ambaye Ogato (Phd) outlined the status of the process and the challenges encountered. He emphasized that the National Dialogue aims ultimately to “end the political process where citizens' lives are unnecessarily lost.”

Commissioner Ambaye also outlined key challenges, including the spread of misinformation on social media, the situation in the Tigray region affecting the rollout of the process, and the decision of some political parties to abstain from participation.

He stressed that the dialogue “will bring about...

#Op_ed: Isaias’ #Eritrea Rejecting Prosperity to Preserve Poverty: How one-man dictatorship harms Horn of #Africa

Three decades after independence, Eritrea, under President Isaias Afwerki, remains “one of Africa’s most closed and militarized states,” notes Miessa Elema Robe. He argues this is deliberate: “prosperity is treated as a threat” and “isolation is used to preserve political control.”

Miessa contends that Eritrea’s strategic #Red_Sea ports remain underdeveloped because “the regime views openness as a threat and isolation as a form of security.” In contrast, #Ethiopia’s approach to its "quest for sea access" is “shaped by historical realities, geographic necessity, international law, developmental logic, and diplomatic principles.”

Coming up today: The Standard Signal | Ep. 5: The Amhara Region Crisis - State Unraveling, Human Cost, and Manufactured Peace

This episode of The Standard Signal brings Hone Mandefro, scholar and human rights advocate, for a searing look at the Amhara regional state - from the origins of the war and its resulting mass atrocities and forced displacement to the collapse of institutional accountability.

How did Ethiopia’s political core become engulfed in war so quickly, and with such devastating human cost?

How do we understand both the structural political failure and the human catastrophe it continues to produce? Is there a way to prevent a protracted insurgency without an end, or, however unlikely, a genuine political reset? What does the announcement of the recent “peace agreement” mean? And what does real accountability look like?

New report says #Ethiopia’s democratic gains replaced by “Illusion of Progress,” accuses government of systematic crackdown

Two major international human rights organizations have accused the Ethiopian government of replacing early political reforms with a coordinated campaign to suppress civic space and silence human rights defenders, warning that the country’s democratic opening has devolved into what they describe as an “illusion of progress.”

The report, “The Illusion of Progress: Ethiopia’s Human Rights Defenders Under Attack”, was released in December 2025 by The Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders, a joint initiative of the International Federation for Human Rights (#FIDH) & the World Organisation Against Torture (#OMCT).

According to the findings, Ethiopia initially experienced meaningful reforms after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed took office in April 2018, including the release of political prisoners, the closure of the notorious...

#US Lawmaker tables resolution condemning rights violations in #Ethiopia, calls for global Magnitsky sanctions

A United States lawmaker has introduced a new congressional resolution condemning what it describes as widespread human rights violations by the Ethiopian government, with a particular focus on abuses against Christians and other religious communities.

The measure, introduced by Rep. Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (R-GA), urges the U.S. Secretary of State to deploy all available diplomatic tools—including targeted sanctions—to protect civilians and hold Ethiopian officials accountable.

The resolution sharply criticizes the Ethiopian government for actions it says “threaten regional stability, violate fundamental human rights, and undermine the strategic interests of the United States in the Horn of Africa.”

It cites allegations of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide, as well as what it describes as violence, ...

South Sudan army deploys to secure Heglig oilfield after deal with #Sudan, #RSF

#South_Sudan’s army began deploying to secure the Heglig oilfield on Wednesday following a three-way deal between Juba and Sudan’s warring factions to protect vital energy infrastructure.

The deployment follows the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces’ (RSF) seizure of the strategic town on Dec. 8, which forced the Sudanese army to abandon its defensive positions and withdraw across the border into South Sudan, where troops were disarmed.

South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) Chief of Staff Paul Nang told reporters in Heglig that the troops entered the area under a “tripartite agreement” involving President Salva Kiir, Sudan’s army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.

Nang stated the deal requires the withdrawal of the Sudanese ...

According to the report, Ethiopian authorities are coordinating with the RSF through regional supporters, facilitating supply lines, the construction of training facilities, and the preparation of airstrips. Government sources told Al Jazeera Arabic that combat vehicles, artillery systems, and electronic jamming devices are already being transported through #Assosa in Ethiopia’s #Benishangul-Gumuz region, which borders Sudan’s Blue Nile region and hosts the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam....

The #Gambella City Administration has imposed a night-time curfew restricting all vehicle and pedestrian movement after 7:00 p.m., amid rising tensions following a series of deadly shootings.
