News: #UN warns Sudan’s ‘internationalized’ war could spill into #Ethiopia, risking wider regional conflict
The United Nations Security Council has warned that Sudan’s escalating and increasingly internationalized conflict risks spilling over into neighbouring countries, including Ethiopia, as fighting intensifies, weapons proliferate, and armed groups move across porous borders.
Briefing the Council, Khaled Khiari, Assistant Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, said the war has recently shifted toward Sudan’s #Kordofan region, with the Rapid Support Forces (#RSF) capturing the town of Babanusa on 1 December and the Heglig oil field on 8 December, while major cities in South Kordofan remain under siege.
He warned that the movement of armed groups across borders, already reported between Sudan and South Sudan, carries “potentially destabilizing effects” for the wider region.

#Ethiopian youth groups restore #Rift_Valley Lake & livelihoods
Under the scorching midday sun in the upper catchment of Ethiopia’s #Abijata-#Shalla National Park, a local youth group toils along the edges of a deep gully carved into the hills by erosion.
The young men shovel soil from the loose edges of the gorge, while women fill sandbags they stack in the gullies, building barriers to hold back the next rains that strike this battered landscape.
“The land is healing, & so are we,” says Hamid Belo, chairman of the #Mekane_Fike Forest Conservation Association.
Once covered with acacia woodlands and fed by steady streams, the land here has been steadily stripped bare.
The loss of tree cover has allowed erosion to scar the hillsides & upset the flow of water into the lakes in this closed river system.

News: #UNHCR warns misinformation targeting refugees in #Gambella risks fueling tensions
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has expressed alarm over the spread of misinformation on social media targeting refugees in Ethiopia’s Gambella region, warning that the situation could inflame tensions if not urgently addressed.
In a statement, UNHCR said the circulation of misleading narratives poses risks to both refugees and host communities, and called for a peaceful resolution to the situation. The agency urged all actors to refrain from hate speech, stressing that such rhetoric endangers civilians and undermines coexistence.
UNHCR underscored that refugees in Gambella fled violence in their countries of origin in search of safety and protection, and should not be subjected to collective blame. Lured to #Russia for jobs, hundreds of #Kenyans wind up fighting in #Ukraine
Kenyan authorities probing organized crime network involved in recruitment
Martin Mburu boarded an Air Arabia flight in Nairobi to Moscow on Oct. 21, convinced he was heading to a well-paid job as a driver or security guard. He’d been told by Kenyan and Russian recruiters he’d earn 250,000 shillings (about $2,000) a month.
His wife, Grace Gathoni, last spoke to Mburu on Nov. 19. Two days later, she saw a report on Kenyan television that the 38-year-old mini-bus driver had died on the frontlines of Russia’s war in Ukraine’s Donbas region.
“It was such a shock,” Gathoni said in an interview from her modest home on the outskirts of the Kenyan capital. “He had no military background and was only given three days of training.”

#Op_ed: Lost Generation: Destruction of education in #Tigray, impact on girls
In this op-ed written on behalf of GEM Tigray, Batseba Seifu examines how the Tigray war, which began in November 2020, has devastated education in the region, disproportionately affecting girls. She notes, “The interruption of learning has created a ‘lost generation’ whose educational foundation, particularly among adolescent girls, has been severely weakened.”
The war destroyed schools, looted materials, displaced teachers, and made learning spaces unsafe. Citing the Tigray Education Bureau, Batseba highlights that nearly half of the region’s children remain out of school, with girls at higher risk of permanent dropout due to domestic responsibilities, economic hardship, insecurity, and systematic sexual violence.
Despite the ongoing rebuilding efforts and psychosocial support, she cautions that “millions of girls still lack safe access to education.”
