#Ethiopians account for 70pc of illegal immigrant arrests in #Kenya

Ethiopians accounted for more than 70 percent of all illegal and undocumented immigrants arrested in Kenya in the year to August 2025, underscoring the scale of cross-border migration driven largely by conflict and instability inside Ethiopia, according to a report cited by The East African newspaper.

The Annual Report on the State of National Security, which was tabled in Kenya’s Parliament by President William Ruto and covers the period from September 2024 to August 2025, shows that Ethiopian nationals accounted for 670 of the 953 arrests recorded during the year, representing 70.3 percent of the total.

Ethiopians were followed by #Somalis, #Burundians, and #Eritreans.

Citing the findings, The East African reports that Kenyan authorities attribute the disproportionately high number of Ethiopian nationals to ...

News: #NBE releases list of more than 100 licensed money transfer agents, warns against unlicensed services

The National Bank of #Ethiopia (NBE) has released an official list of more than 100 licensed money transfer agents and cautioned the public against using unlicensed services for remittances.

The NBE reminded Ethiopians that providing or using money transfer and remittance services without a license is illegal and punishable under Ethiopian law. Such services include receiving and delivering funds domestically or abroad, and engaging in these activities without NBE authorization exposes individuals and businesses to fraud, financial loss, and potential involvement in money laundering or other illegal activities.

Only financial institutions licensed by the NBE are authorized to provide money remittance services. The public is strongly urged to use these licensed institutions exclusively to ensure security, legal compliance, and protection ...

#Ethiopia: Founder of #Fentale_Media journalist Fanuel Kinfue says he sustained serious injuries while fleeing alleged attack in Addis Abeba

Founder of Fentale Media and journalist Fanuel Kinfu has told Addis Standard that he sustained serious injuries while attempting to escape what he described as an attempted attack by “unknown individuals” in Addis Abeba, an incident he believes is linked to his media work.

Fanuel said the injuries he sustained could leave him unable to walk for three to six months. Recounting the incident, he said that on 19 November 2025, at around 8:00 a.m., his family informed him those individuals “wearing civilian clothing” had come to their neighbourhood asking about him.

Recalling previous detentions, during which security personnel had arrived during daytime hours, Fanuel said he feared the situation might be similar.

He added that he contacted his family again later in the evening, around 6:00 p.m., to ask whether the ...

News: #Salsay_Weyane opposes confiscation of TikTok-mobilized aid for Hitsats IDPs by Federal government, warns of worsening hunger

Salsay Weyane #Tigray has opposed the confiscation of funds and relief items mobilized by TikTok users for internally displaced persons (#IDPs) at the #Hitsats IDPs center by Federal government, warning that the action has further deepened hunger among displaced communities.

In a press release on Monday, the party said the aid was intended to provide urgent food assistance to IDPs facing severe shortages, adding that interference with privately mobilized humanitarian support has deprived vulnerable families of immediate life-saving help.

The statement criticized the federal government for obstruction of humanitarian efforts, arguing that such actions exacerbate an already dire humanitarian crisis rather than contribute to durable solutions, including the safe and voluntary return of IDPs.

It was reported that #Ethiopia’s ...

#UAE to withdraw forces from #Yemen after #Saudi strike

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced it would withdraw its remaining forces from Yemen following an ultimatum.

The country’s Defense Ministry, in a statement via its state-run WAM news agency, cited "recent developments and their potential repercussions on the safety and effectiveness of counter-terrorism operations."

However, it did not say when the withdrawal would occur.

Earlier on Tuesday, the leader of Yemen's presidential council announced a state of emergency after a Saudi Arabia-led strike on the southern port of Mukalla.

Saudi Arabia said the strike targeted an arms shipment from the United Arab Emirates meant to reach Yemeni separatists.

In response, the UAE Foreign Ministry called for "restraint and wisdom," and denied that it shipped weapons to separatists.

Recent developments in the Nile Basin Initiative (#NBI) could allow downstream countries to rejoin the initiative, following what Egypt has described as a “historic” diplomatic breakthrough, according to a report by Abu Dhabi-based The National.

In an hour-long interview broadcast on Sunday night on the Saudi network MBC, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said a new round of ministerial talks held this month in #Burundi brought together previously opposing blocs “in a genuine consultative process” for the first time in years.

The discussions focused on the Cooperative Framework Agreement (#CFA), a long-stalled proposal to transform the NBI into a Nile Basin Commission to manage the river’s waters.

The report by The National indicates that the meeting produced a historic outcome, with seven participating states endorsing the ...

#Russia, #China and #Iran join naval exercises off South Africa

Naval contingents from Russia, China and Iran are converging in #South_Africa in anticipation of the start of Exercise Mosi-3 in early January. Mosi-3 is labelled a #BRICS initiative, albeit participation identified so far seems rather thin.

Making a port call in Mombasa en route to South Africa on Christmas Eve were two naval vessels of the People Liberation Army (PLAN), the Type 052DL guided-missile destroyer Tangshan (D122) and the Type 903A replenishment ship Taihu (K889).

The remaining ship of the 48th Flotilla, the Type 054A guided-missile frigate Daqing (F576), appears to have been left behind to keep watch over the #Red_Sea and Gulf of Aden.

Heading down the west coast of Africa are the Russian Steregushchiy Class corvette Stoykiy (F545) with a Ka-27PL ASW helicopter on board, and its escorting Altay Class ...

‘We walked over corpses’: Mother reveals journey out of hell in northern #Ethiopia during #Tigray war

“When the enemy entered, we fled. Those who escaped, escaped; those who died, died. We walked over corpses. We were lucky to escape.”

Shushay and her six children were among the three million people displaced from their homes during the Tigray conflict between 2020-2022. Thousands of people were killed in the war that pitted local fighters against federal troops allied with fighters from other regions.

Three years later, she still remembers the “good life” they left behind in northern Ethiopia. She remembers the brothers and sisters who were unable to escape, her house with three rooms and a television, and the security of work and school for her children.

“Those who stayed behind were slaughtered & killed; we left them behind,” she reflected.

When the fighting spread to the #Amhara and #Afar regions...

According to The Times of Israel, which cited an announcement by the Ministry of Diaspora Affairs issued on 30 December 2025, the affected groups include several branches of Doctors Without Borders and Oxfam, the #Danish and #Norwegian Refugee Councils, Caritas Internationalis, the #American Friends ....

#Ethiopia: “We have received nothing”: More than 3,800 Sudan returnees left without aid at #Abiy_Addi IDP center

More than 3,800 internally displaced households who returned from Sudan due to ongoing instability are living without humanitarian assistance at the Abiy Addi IDP center in #Tigray, according to information obtained by Addis Standard.

The returnees are part of approximately 13,131 displaced households at the site, many of whom arrived as early as 2022. Camp residents say humanitarian conditions have sharply deteriorated, with families sheltering in makeshift structures that have stood for nearly five years.

When contacted about federal claims that “uninterrupted support had been provided between September and December,” Abiy Addi camp coordinator Kidanemariam rejected the assertion.

“One cannot say there is sufficient aid,” he told Addis Standard. “There are about 3,800 households who came from the Sudan cluster who have received no ....

News #Somaliland agreed to resettle Palestinians, host #Israeli base, join Abraham Accords for recognition, says #Somalia’s president

Somalia’s president also told Al Jazeera that, according to Somali intelligence, Somaliland has accepted three Israeli conditions in exchange for Israeli recognition: the resettlement of #Palestinians, the establishment of an Israeli military base on the coast of the Gulf of Aden, and Somaliland joining the #Abraham Accords.

Mohamud also said that Somalia has intelligence indicating there is already a certain level of Israeli presence in Somaliland, and Israeli recognition of the region is merely a normalisation of what was already happening covertly.

Israel will resort to forcibly displacing Palestinians to Somalia, and its presence in the region is not for peace, the Somali leader added.

Israel is also seeking to control strategically important ...

The #Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has called on the African Union (AU) and international partners to convene emergency sessions to address what it described as a rapidly worsening humanitarian crisis in Tigray, urging urgent action to ensure humanitarian access for internally displaced persons (#IDPs).

In a letter to African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the TPLF said conditions at IDP centers across the region have sharply deteriorated, with displaced populations facing severe food shortages and rising mortality. The party argued that the situation constitutes a violation of the #Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities Agreement.

#Sudanese civil groups slam #African_Union for backing government peace plan

Sudanese civil society organizations have criticized the African Union Commission for welcoming a peace initiative proposed by the government, calling the move a dangerous shift from regional consensus and a sign of institutional bias.

Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssef, on Tuesday, welcomed the peace initiative presented by the Sudanese Prime Minister Kamil Idris to the United Nations Security Council, describing it as a solid foundation for achieving sustainable peace.

The initiative includes several provisions, such as the withdrawal of the Rapid Support Forces from cities under its control to pre-agreed camps under #UN, #Arab, & #African supervision.

It also calls for the commencement of a disarmament process for these forces under international monitoring, alongside guarantees to prevent the redistribution of weaponry.

In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote that “much of Minnesota Fraud, up to 90%, is caused by people that came into our Country, illegally, from Somalia”.

He also repeated attacks on Somali American Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, calling her “one of the many scammers”.
