What this means is that, during practice, your abdominal cavity will begin to close and contract rhythmically either of its own accord. Sometimes, these contractions will take the form of sudden jerks and twitches and at other times they will be more controlled closing and contracting type movements.
As with previous stages of development, these experiences are not uncomfortable in any way, or at least, they shouldn’t be. If they are uncomfortable then you are likely to be using too strong an intent or else there is a blockage in the abdominal region that you will need a master to help you clear.
One of the most interesting aspects of this stage of practice is that, for many, it is the first time you actually experience for yourself just how ‘electrical’ and ‘magnetic’ Qi is when it moves through the body. As it builds to a stage whereby it effects your physical structure, it is easy for you to directly experience and so ‘know’ on a deeper level what your Qi is.
Two Poles
At a later stage in the Dan Tian developmental process, there comes a point whereby the Yang Qi within the Dan Tin begins to move back and forth between two poles that manifest on the edges of the Yin field. It generates the experience of the Dan Tian Qi bouncing up and down on a vertical line.
The Yang Qi moves up and down within the space of the field being repelled and attracted rhythmically between these points. This is a tangible manifestation of the rule of mutual attraction and repulsion that exist within the philosophical laws of Yin and Yang. Sometimes, this ‘bouncing’ will be slow and sometimes fast, as far as I can tell, there are too many variables involved from person to person to accurately ascertain why this may be the case. For others, the sphere will then move left and right as well, as if there are four points which are repelling and attracting the ‘sphere’ of the condensed Yang Qi. This doesn’t seem to be the case for all people though. Some systems also aim to generate this process of moving the sphere between two or four poles whereas other systems allow it to happen of its own accord.
Fullness
Once the field of Yin is full of Yang Qi, there is a feeling of fullness which means that most of the other signs start to fade away. The Dan Tian shell is pressurized under the outwards-pushing force of the Yang Qi. This is a good stage to reach in your practice.
At this stage, which takes a very long time for the majority of people, the result is of a very powerful feeling pressure in the abdominal cavity that is accompanied by a feeling of a low electrical-type ‘hum’ which can be felt most of the time. It is common for the body to sometimes discharge little static shocks of Qi from the body at this stage as the Dan Tian sometimes overflows and needs to empty out a little. It is also at this stage that the Dan Tian, within some but not all Nei Gong systems, discharges excess Qi into the microcosmic orbit or small water wheel (depending upon what your tradition names this exercises) and so the amount of Qi in the Yin field container is regulated. Note that, for many, it is difficult to experience Qi within the Dan Tian to any great degree until this stage is reached as it is only when the Yang Qi is pressing outwards onto the inner edge of the Yin field that sensations may become clear.
