The 16 Immortal Arhats
All 16 were direct disciples of Buddha Shakyamuni, and achieved enlightenment.
While most would live out their lives as Heroic Saints, after achieving enlightenment - these 16 were commanded by Buddha to claim the powers of immortality inherent in enlightenment.
He instructed they should remain on Earth, until the coming of Buddha Maitreya - the 5th of 1000 Universal Teachers of this auspicious eon.
After Buddhas death, the 16 went into retreats, in appointed Mountain Hideaways. That was 2,550 years ago. They have remained ever since, working to prepare the way for the One to Come.
When Maitreya comes, they will descend from their dwellings.
They typically accomplish activities by emanating duplicates of themselves - the double then flies through the night sky, to engage in magical activities, while the enlightened master sits in meditation.
