Someone asked, "Those who pursue the Dao often dwell in mountains and forests, but these places are often plagued by tigers and wolves. How can one ward them off?" The Baopuzi replied, "In ancient times, those who entered the mountains all carried the Huangshen Yue Zhang seal. It was four inches wide and had 120 characters inscribed on it. They would seal the mud of the place where they resided in all four directions, within a radius of one hundred paces, so that tigers and wolves would not dare to approach. When they encountered fresh tiger tracks, they would align their seal in the same direction as the tracks, and the tiger would leave. If they aligned the seal in the opposite direction, the tiger would return. By wearing this seal while traversing mountains and forests, one would not fear tigers and wolves. Not only does it ward off tigers and wolves, but if there are evil spirits that cause misfortune and blessings at mountain rivers, shrines, or temples, by sealing the mud with the seal, their path is blocked, and they can no longer manifest their powers.

In the past, there was a giant turtle living in Shitou Water, always residing in a deep pool. People named the pool Turtle Pool because of this creature. The turtle had the ability to transform into ghosts and afflict humans with illnesses. There was a Taoist named Dai Bing from Wu who happened to encounter it. He created several hundred seals using the Yue Zhang method and threw them into the pool while on a boat. After a while, the giant turtle, measuring more than ten zhang in length, emerged and floated without daring to move. He subjugated it, and the afflicted individuals were all cured. Additionally, many small turtles emerged and lined up dead on the shore.

If one encounters a tiger in the mountains, they can perform the Sanwu Jin method, and the tiger will retreat. The Sanwu Jin method requires oral transmission and cannot be fully explained in writing. One method involves imagining oneself as a vermilion bird, growing three zhang in length, and standing atop the tiger's head. Then, one holds their breath, and the tiger will leave. If one has to spend the night in the mountains, they can secretly take the hairpin from their head and pierce it into the white tiger while holding their breath, and there will be nothing to fear.

Another method involves holding a knife in the left hand, closing one's breath, drawing a square on the ground, and reciting, "The Yin of Mount Heng, the Yang of Mount Tai, prevent thieves from rising, tigers and wolves from moving, cities and fortifications from being breached." Then, one can use the knife to strike the white tiger for ten days straight during midday, and there will be nothing to fear. Some use a powerful method, swallowing 360 breaths, and with a shout from left to right, the tiger will not dare to rise. By employing these methods, one can enter the mountains without fear of tigers. Others use the Seven-Star Tiger Steps, as well as the Jade Spirit Talisman, Eight Mighty Victory Talisman, Li'er Tai Ping Talisman, Middle Yellow Hua Gai Seal, and the Stone-Flowing Yellow Powder. They burn the horns of cattle and sheep or set up the Seal of the Western Yueguan Mountain, and all have been proven effective. These are the four essential talismans."

It is said that Nagarjuna laughed and said, "You must have gone to thieves, not to saints. They know nothing. You just watch your breath, the ancient method of Buddha, just watch your breath coming in, going out. Whenever you remember, watch your breath. Even when you go to steal, when you enter into somebody's house in the night, go on watching your breath. When you have opened the treasure and the diamonds are there, go on watching your breath, and do whatsoever you want to do, but don't forget watching the breath."

The thief said, "This seems to be simple. No morality? No character needed? No other requirement?"

Nagarjuna said, "Absolutely none, just watch your breath."

And after fifteen days the thief was back, but he was a totally different man. He fell at the feet of Nagarjuna and he said, "You trapped me, and you trapped me so beautifully that I was not even able to suspect. I tried for these fifteen days, it is impossible. If I watch my breath, I cannot steal. If I steal, I cannot watch my breath. Watching the breath, I become so silent, so alert, so aware, so conscious, that even diamonds look like pebbles. You have created a difficulty for me, a dilemma. Now what am I supposed to do?"

Nagarjuna said, "Get lost! Whatsoever you want to do. If you want that silence, that peace, that bliss, that arises in you when you watch your breath, then choose that. If you think all those diamonds and gold and silver is more valuable, then choose that. That is for you to choose! Who am I to interfere in your life?"

The man said, "I cannot choose to be unconscious again. I have never known such moments. Accept me as one of your disciples, initiate me."

Nagarjuna said, "I have initiated you already."
