I used to be exclusively on the spiritual Alchemy side. However I was reading a book on Thomas Vaughan and he said something that struck me.
Paraphrase: "if one ONLY does the physical art, then all results will be stillborn. If one does ONLY the spiritual art, then all results will be Ghost-like".
Then later, when reading Paracelsus he said something like: "understanding how plants grow, animals grow, embryos develop, and worlds are created is key to the physical side of the Art".
So my opinion now is something like: It's not just working with physical substances to change one to another, nor is it just connecting with spirit or something like that. Alchemy involves a study of the world to understand "process" itself. Nothing is static, everything is in flux, moving, changing, transforming. You can be conscious of the "process" or you can remain unconscious to it. Being conscious of "process" is vital to being able to manipulate it, and in so doing, become a Co-creator of the Cosmos.
As for spiritual Alchemy vs physical Alchemy? That dichotomy falls away. The world isn't broken in two, one physical and one spiritual. There is only "One Nature" and "Parts" of that Nature are "Occulted" to us.

Considering Paracelsus used to nut into piles of horseshit in order to grow midget slaves I think he probably knows a lot about how life grows

FYI the creation of the "Homunculus" in Paracelsussy's work where he mixes human blood and semen into horse manure to create/grow a living Being, is definitely a veiled denoscription of the creation of "Higher Being Bodies".

Esoteric Teachings of the Tibetan Tantra
C. A. Muses
This volume contains three books of secret Vajrayana Buddhist lore translated and edited by the scholar of esotericism Charles Muses in cooperation with exiled Tibetan monks. Among the esoteric initiation rituals are found many strange passages, including a mysterious prophecy that tells of a future when Tibet will be overrun by demons, while the Naropa texts describe practices such as the Yoga of Entering Another's Body, which can be used to reanimate a corpse. Also discussed at some length is a method of lucid dreaming or "astral projection" known as The Practice of the Illusory Body.
