Hermes Trismegistus
Liber Hermetis Trismegisti, commonly known as the Book of Hermes, is a foundational work of Hellenistic astrology that possesses a distinctly Egyptian character. The system of inherited knowledge it describes is older and more complex than anything found in other sources of Hellenistic astrology, and its treatment of the ancient Egyptian "decans" is by far the earliest in any astrological literature. This rare English translation is based on the only surviving Latin copies of a lost Greek original.

"Jean Dubuis, the founder of the French alchemical-qabalistic organization The Philosophers of Nature often mentioned the options that open up to us after death. Using the Tree of Life as his guide Dubuis would state that after we die we generally have two choices open to us: the Path towards Hod and from there to Tiphareth, or the Path from Netzach and from there to Tiphareth.
"Of these two he advocated the Path of Hod as the 'path of memory' rather than the gentler and more pleasant path of Netzach and its association with the famous 'waters of forgetfulness' from Greek mythology. This river, Lethe, said to exist in the underworld was one the recently dead would drink from and forget their previous life. The goddess Lethe who watched over it was called 'oblivion' giving a heavier weight to the choice made. The river was was also known as the river of 'unmindfulness'.
"Initiates of the Orphic mysteries, from where we get the Hymns of Orpheus, the source of innumerable liturgical and magical rites among the Renaissance magi, (as was detailed in our course on the The Three Books of Occult Philosophy) were taught instead to drink from the 'waters of memory.' Memory is nonother than continuity of consciousness. Remember what was said many time to you, and stated in the book, Meditations on the Tarot - life, memory, and wakefulness are one and the same; death, forgetfulness, and sleep are one in the same. As initiates you must make the effort to be alive, remember, and be awake in this world and others to come. This wakefulness is continuity of consciousness, of awareness and can only be achieved through personal effort and mental training.
