SOUTH AFRICA OPPOSITION PARTIES CONDEMN ZELENSKY’S PLANNED VISIT
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s planned 24 April visit to South Africa on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s request has generated opposition in the host country.
South Africa’s third-largest party, uMkhonto weSizwe (MK), said it will hold a protest to express its displeasure if Zelensky appears. MK Secretary-General Floyd Shivambu said Ramaphosa’s decision was ‘misguided’ and in ‘clear alignment with European imperial interests.’
The South African Communist Party (SACP), which has been a close ally of the ANC for decades, has also denounced the invitation, with SACP spokesperson Alex Mashilo describing it as an ‘ill-considered move’. Mashilo called Zelensky a ‘puppet of the US-led imperialist bloc’ and said the visit would place South Africa on what he termed as the wrong side of history.
However, on 10 April, the president’s office confirmed that the visit would go ahead as planned.

Continued……Ramaphosa’s move represents a significant departure from his government’s position on the Russia-Ukraine war over the last two years. South Africa maintained a non-aligned stance on the conflict and rejected the West’s demand to align with Kiev. This led US-aligned states to accuse Pretoria of siding with Moscow, with whom it has enjoyed close ties dating back to the struggle against apartheid.

In this clip, travel creator Weyni Tesfai said the tourism industry was built on colonialism, with devastating consequences for local wildlife, as trophy hunting destroyed the harmonious human-wildlife dynamics that preceded colonialism. Much of the same remained even after independence, with the industry catering to and profiting Europeans, leaving Africans with crumbs and ruined ecosystems.
Tourism has grown more than five-fold from 6.7 million visitors in 1990 to 33.8 million in 2012, contributing 2.8 per cent to Africa’s GDP, according to the Africa Policy Research Institute. However, local communities have barely benefited due to the heavy reliance on foreign-owned businesses, imports and profits flowing out of Africa.

Continued……. A World Bank case study of the Tanzanian archipelago of Zanzibar shows that while tourism makes up 27 per cent of GDP and 80 per cent of foreign exchange earnings, locals hold only 25 per cent of jobs, mostly in low-skilled roles, with foreign-owned hotels dominating the market.
The International Monetary Fund and World Bank also played a role in the current affairs as they promoted tourism as a development tool, prioritising foreign investment over local empowerment. These policies liberalised economies to attract international capital, leading to foreign-dominated tourism sectors with minimal local ownership or control.
On land ownership, the rise of Western conservancies has resulted in the displacement of people under the guise of protecting wildlife. This conveniently leaves out the fact that the only reason wildlife exists in the first place is thanks to custodianship by the same communities.

In a win for anti-imperialist activism in Kenya, the Gates Foundation has withdrawn from the Host Country Agreement with the government after public uproar and legal challenges.
In a statement, Gates Foundation Africa Director Dr. Paulin Basinga confirmed the exit from the immunity deal with Kenya, stating that an ongoing legal case has drawn attention away from its core mission.
Kenya granted the Gates Foundation, formerly known as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a special status through legal notice number 157 of 4 October 2024 by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.
In November 2024, the Law Society of Kenya challenged the notice in court, which ordered the suspension of the privileges and immunities to members of the foundation. However, Mudavadi, while speaking during the official opening of the Foundation’s Nairobi Sub-Regional office on 15 November, clarified that the privileges and immunities were meant to facilitate seamless operation of international organisations.

Today, we celebrate the 103rd birthday of Julius Kambarage Nyerere (1922-99), the first president of Tanzania.
Born in 1922 in the village of Butiama, Nyerere grew up in Tanganyika, under British control per a League of Nations mandate, before it united with Zanzibar in 1964 to form what we now know as the United Republic of Tanzania.
Fondly referred to as 'Mwalimu,' meaning teacher in Swahili, Nyerere was not just a leader but a passionate anti-colonialist and political thinker, serving as president from 1964 until 1985.

Continued….. His journey was far from straightforward. Nyerere emerged as a symbol of determination, challenging the imperialist narrative that claimed Africa was unprepared for self-governance. This powerful moment from a 1960 interview showcases a young Nyerere firmly rejecting colonialist assumptions, stating that Europeans granting independence was them restoring a right that had been unjustly taken. He argued that the question of African readiness for self-rule was irrelevant, as we had successfully managed our affairs long before colonisation.
Nyerere joined our ancestors on 14 October 1999 in London, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire.

REMEMBERING FUNMILAYO RANSOME-KUTI
Revolutionary Nigerian activist Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti joined the ancestors on this day in 1978. She was 77.
During the struggle against colonial rule, she established the Abeokuta Women's Union. This grew to include over 20,000 members. It fought to secure political representation and educational opportunities for women.
Her son, the pan-African revolutionary and Afrobeats creator Fela Kuti, remembered his mother spearheading marches against the British authorities. He recalled how, on one occasion - when a pompous colonial official insulted her - she stood her ground, referring to him as a ‘rude little rat’ and a ‘b*stard.’ Fela reminisced, 'Can you believe she insulted the highest representative of the British imperial crown in Abeokuta? I was filled with pride. That incident was the talk of the town in Abeokuta.'
