WHO IS FUNDING TERRORIST GROUPS IN AFRICA?
How are t*rrorist groups able to finance their activities? That’s the question raised by Nigerian General Christopher Musa after captured Boko Haram fighters were found in possession of hard currency. The level of organisation and logistics required to maintain operations for 15 years is no mean feat - likely beyond the capacities of mere rag-tag militias.
A plausible explanation is external support, and precedent exists to warrant suspicion. The Sahel’s t*rrorism crisis post-2011 can be directly linked to Libya, where insurgents, armed and funded by Western powers to overthrow pan-African icon Muammar Gaddafi, trickled south after the job was done.

Continued……This turned the Sahel into the world’s new epicentre of t*rrorism, with countries such as Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger most affected.
Western support for t*rrorist groups is also documented elsewhere. Leaks concerning the State Department revealed correspondence between Jake Sullivan and his then-boss Hillary Clinton, with one email reading, "AQ [Al Qaeda] is on our side in Syria." The US and the UK also armed and funded Mujihadeen in Afghanistan to fight its adversary, the Soviet Union.
Back to Africa, countries like Mali have directly accused France of violating Malian airspace and delivering weapons to armed groups in 2022, and of training t*rrorists in 2021.

Wildlife smugglers are upping the ‘ante’ - or rather, focusing more on rare insects, such as ants. While big game, like rhinos and elephants (and their body parts), is still highly prized, stricter patrols have made life hard for poachers - prompting them to turn to smaller, lesser-known creatures, which can also fetch big bucks on the black market. Two Belgian teenagers are among a gang of four suspected smugglers recently busted by Kenyan authorities - in a sign that this kind of activity is now also being cracked down on. They reportedly looked ‘distraught’ and very uncomfortable in court - did they have ants in their pants? Swipe through for the details.

COULD THIS BE ORANIA’S FIRST BLACK RESIDENT?
South Africa’s apartheid regime may have collapsed over three decades ago, but Black citizens still have to fight to live in de-facto Whites-only parts of the country. The Northern Cape town of Orania refuses to accept any would-be residents who are not descended from Dutch settlers - citing locals’ right to preserve their cultural traditions. The very existence of the town in post-apartheid South Africa is now being challenged by the local branch of the Economic Freedom Fighters party, with chairman Shadrack Tlhaole leading a protest on 22 April and presenting a petition to the regional government.

Continued….. He vows to be the first Black resident of Orania if the authorities refuse to rule it illegal, arguing the town currently violates South Africa’s constitution, which is anchored in the principles of inclusivity and non-racialism. In the past, Orania residents have claimed that their enclave’s existence is protected by Article 235 of the South African constitution, which guarantees self-determination. However, opponents insist that the cited part of the constitution does not permit people of a particular racial, religious or cultural group to live in a secluded place away from other South Africans. In 2000, the Northern Cape High Court adjourned ‘sine die’ (without a further hearing date) after Orania’s proponents challenged attempts by the government to incorporate the town into the nearby municipal authority, leaving the town’s legal status in limbo and a subject of debate. But in 2025, should it even be debatable whether Black South Africans can purchase property in certain parts of their country - simply because they are Black?

Pan-Africanist forces are mobilising behind Burkina Faso’s president, Ibrahim Traoré, as a credible threat of a Western-backed coup d’état looms against his government following US Africa Command (AFRICOM)’s General Michael Langley inaccurately claiming Traoré’s government is nationalising gold to prop up a ‘junta regime.’
Langley’s comments have riled many online, as the evidence shows Burkina Faso—as well as the other member-states of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), Mali and Niger—have been reclaiming their natural resources following successful people-backed coups d’état in recent years.
Since 30 September 2022, Burkina Faso has booted French troops, terminated military cooperation with France, nationalised two gold mines, cooperated with China to build a teaching hospital and worked with Russia to beat back armed t*rrorism that traces its origins to the 2011 NATO invasion of Libya.

Africans across the continent and in the diaspora believe Burkina Faso’s struggle is part of an Africa-wide struggle for sovereignty.
AFRICOM’s website says the US military maintains a presence on the continent to ‘advance US national interests.’ Its 2024 Posture Statement says the US uses AFRICOM to gain access to ‘Africa’s critical minerals and maritime shipping lanes.’
It’s clear from Langley’s comments during a US Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on 3 April that the US empire will continue to use ‘Black faces in high places’ to advance its agenda under the guise of fighting t*rrorism and defending democracy and human rights.
The demand is growing louder, as Africans will no longer accept military occupations disguised as peacekeeping or Black generals peddling colonial agendas.

On this day in 1993, anti-apartheid icon Oliver Reginald Tambo died - one year before the collapse of the brutal racist system he’d fought against for most of his life. He’s sometimes referred to as the 'other half' of South Africa's African National Congress (ANC) party.
He was born on 27 October 1917, in today's Eastern Cape province in South Africa. He excelled academically and received a scholarship to study sciences and teaching at the University of Fort Hare - the only university that admitted Black students back then. There, he met and befriended a certain Nelson Mandela. The two set up South Africa's first Black-owned law firm and helped launch the ANC's Youth League.

Continued……. The 1950s saw Tambo rise through the ranks of the ANC - becoming party vice president in 1957. In the aftermath of the 1960 Sharpeville massacre, which saw 69 protesters gunned down by the police as they peacefully protested against the draconian Pass Laws, the ANC was banned, so Tambo went into exile and set up operations there. He is credited with holding the liberation movement together during this difficult time, becoming party boss in 1969.
In the late '80s, the regime reluctantly came to the negotiating table after losses on the battlefield in Angola, and under the pressure of international sanctions. Tambo led the talks, which ultimately resulted in the unbanning of the ANC and the release of political prisoners - including Mandela in 1990. That year, Tambo returned to his homeland.
He'd suffered a stroke in 1989, and in 1991 - as his health continued to deteriorate - he handed over the leadership of the party to Mandela. However, Tambo continued to serve as a source of wise counsel to the ANC till his death. Long live the revolutionary spirit of Oliver Tambo!

DID DIAMOND GIANT MEDDLE IN BOTSWANA VOTE?
Botswana’s ex president says the current leadership has watered down an “unprecedented” deal with diamond giant De Beers that he’d negotiated - and alleges it was bought off by the diamond giant. Mokgweetsi Masisi has insinuated that his rivals in the election - Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) - may have been getting funding during the 2024 campaign from the South African-British firm. This, he claims, could have cost him the presidency, and the country - greater diamond profits.
The November 2024 electoral defeat of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), which had been in power since independence in 1966, surprised many. The country is often touted as one of the continent’s success stories, mainly due to the prudent use of its diamond resources. According to the World Bank, Botswana has the third-highest GDP per capita in Africa and some of the best public infrastructure.

Masisi has yet to provide hard evidence to support his allegations, made at a media conference in early April, that De Beers bankrolled UDC’s campaign to get back at his administration, which, according to the ex president, pushed the diamond firm for a bigger share of the national diamond pie. Do you believe Masisi when he says that a foreign corporation essentially pushed for ‘regime change’ in Africa? Or is it simply a case of sour grapes from a politician struggling to move on from a humiliating electoral loss?

BURKINA FASO FOILS FRESH FOREIGN PLOT TO TOPPLE GOVT
They really have him in their sights, don’t they? Burkina Faso - under the revolutionary, pan-African leadership of President Ibrahim Traoré - has foiled yet another alleged attempt to destabilise the country and bring down his government. The nation’s security minister revealed the names of two coup plotters who he said had links to ‘masterminds’ operating from Ivory Coast. The coup was planned for 16 April but was exposed in time thanks to information provided by soldiers and home-guard volunteers, whom the conspirators had attempted to bribe into taking part. The hunt to catch those involved is on.

ANOTHER PRO-PALESTINE COLUMBIA STUDENT ARRESTED
The unjust 14 April detention of Mohsen Mahdawi, a Palestinian student at Columbia University who holds US permanent residency, comes amidst growing international condemnation of Israel’s military onslaught in Gaza.
While the US has never been pro-Palestine by any measure, government suppression of domestic dissent inside the United States has escalated in recent years. Now, the Trump administration has unleashed a new phase, whereby the government is attempting to codify into law punishment for denouncing what many human rights groups have called Israeli apartheid and what the International Court of Justice (ICJ) finds as ‘plausible’ gen*cide. In November 2024, the International Criminal Court (ICC) also issued arrest warrants for Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and his former minister of defence, Yoav Gallant.
