Continued……. The humanitarian crisis in Sudan is the worst globally. According to the International Organization of Migration, 11-million people have been internally displaced - with 4 million seeking refuge abroad. The country is in the grip of a hunger emergency, with 25-million people facing acute food insecurity according to the UN. The ongoing proxy war is thought to have killed tens if not hundreds of thousands of people, though with the destruction of the health system, the real number is impossible to determine. In May 2024, US envoy for Sudan Tom Periello suggested 150,000 had already died.

YALE PULLS PLUG ON PRO-PALESTINE STUDENT GROUP

On one side, someone who advocates for the ethnic cleansing of a group of people and for the bombing of food and aid depots visits a university. On the other, a group of people protested his presence. Who do you punish? If you’re one of the most prestigious institutions of higher education in the US, it’s apparently the latter.

Yale University has announced it had withdrawn Students for Justice in Palestine’s campus chapter’s (@Yalies4Palestine on IG) status as a registered student group for organising a tent encampment on 22 April against the visit of Israeli far-right national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir. The university said the tent encampment violated Yale’s policies on using outdoor spaces and added that it was investigating alleged anti-Semitic conduct.
🤬6😈4👎1💅1
Continued……The attacks on Palestine solidarity at US universities continue a battle for the right to free speech and assembly that has escalated since Israel’s military onslaught began on 7 October 2023 in Gaza. US President Donald Trump’s administration has sought to deport non-citizen pro-Palestine university protesters who have a legal right to live in the US, and his administration has frozen or threatened to freeze federal funding for several top educational institutions if they do not agree to a series of policy changes. Before Trump, the Biden administration sat back as universities called police on student protesters in early 2024 and the administration’s FBI collaborated with universities, law enforcement leaders and Israel supporters in the summer of 2024—according to @mondoweiss—to further clamp down on student dissent in late 2024.

In 2007, a Jerusalem court convicted Ben-Gvir for inciting r*cism and supporting t*rrorism. His recent post on X says US Republican Party legislators supported his idea for Israel to bomb food and aid depots in Gaza. Lancet medical journal figures in July 2024 estimated Gaza’s death toll could exceed 186,000.

S. AFRICA OPPOSITION PARTIES PROTEST ZELENSKY VISIT

Rainy weather was not enough to stop South African political opposition members from protesting the visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on 24 April.

Economic Freedom Fighters (@effsouthafrica) and uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party (@MkhontoweSizwex on X, @mkhontowesizweofficial on IG) gathered outside the Union Buildings, the office of the South African president in the capital, Pretoria, where a meeting took place between the Ukrainian leader and his host, President Cyril Ramaphosa.
🔥5👍2
Continued……. They carried placards denouncing Ramaphosa for hosting Zelensky, who they accused of being a NATO puppet and an agent of imperialism.
The visit, Zelensky’s first to the country and the continent as president, has been controversial since Ramaphosa’s office announced it in February.

In early April, the South African Communist Party (SACP), a long-term ally of the ruling African National Congress (ANC), had called on Ramaphosa to cancel Zelensky’s invitation, describing it as ‘ill-considered.’ The party also warned that the visit risked putting South Africa on the ‘wrong side of history and the global class struggle.’

However, the government remains adamant that the visit was necessary in the search for a peaceful resolution to the Russia-Ukraine war.

DRC-M23 TALKS END IN DEADLOCK IN QATAR

Peace talks between DR Congo and Rwanda’s proxy M23 militia have hit a brick wall: the sticking point appears to be the release of captured rebel fighters and political recognition. Fighting has reportedly already resumed in eastern DRC.

M23’s January escalation has been devastating, reportedly resulting in the deaths of more than 3,000 and the displacement of more than 700,000 from eastern DRC’s capital Goma. The rebels have been raking in profits from captured mining towns, suggesting the motive is mainly economic.

Swipe through for the key facts on why the talks failed.

Western Sahara is a full member state of the African Union, having joined the continental body on 22nd February 1982 as the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. Many countries and organisations throughout the world recognise the Sahrawi people’s right to live in their own state, including the United Nations General Assembly, which annually adopts a resolution affirming their inalienable right to self-determination and independence.

But Morocco, backed by imperialists, says the territory belongs to it. In 2020, Trump accepted Rabat’s claim and, just recently, Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated Washington’s support. Swipe through for a breakdown of the history of Western Sahara, from colonialism to Morocco’s ongoing occupation and the brave efforts of the Sahrawi people to achieve self-determination, despite the obstacles.

BRAZIL'S 'O JOGO BONITO' IS ROOTED IN RACISM

Arthur Friedenreich (1892-1969), Brazil’s first mixed-race football star, faced racism while dribbling a path to becoming a legend in football.

Born to a German father and an Afro-Brazilian mother, Friedenreich rose in football when white elites dominated the sport in Brazil. Yet, they couldn't ignore Friedenreich’s talent. He revolutionised the game by introducing the iconic ‘o jogo bonito’ style, blending street football’s fluid dribbling and agility that would come to define Brazilian football.

Despite facing exclusion and brutal opposition, Friedenreich carved out a place for himself, becoming a symbol of resistance against colonially-imposed racial discrimination. His legacy set the stage for future football legends, like Pelé (1940-2022) and Neymar.

‘AFRICA IS NOT POOR’

What do African nations, the Philippines, Mexico and Brazil all have in common? They are rich! Only the people are poor. Countries that have suffered under the boot of imperialism are not underdeveloped - they are overexploited. That line comes from American political scientist Michael Parenti. In this clip, he describes the 400-year exploitation of the Global South.

His speech - made decades ago - still resonates today. Take the nations in the resource-rich Sahel region. Following people-backed coups, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger formed the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) - a pan-African, anti-imperialist confederation. Together, they’ve reasserted control over their resources and broken exploitative contracts with foreign multinationals, ensuring their natural wealth starts benefitting the people. The pan-African revolution is alive!

STOP BLAMING CHINA, THE U.S. NEEDS A REVOLUTION

In Africa today, 35% of people live in extreme poverty while many of our leaders remain Western puppets, emulating systems that have failed. China, on the other hand, over the last 40 years or so, has lifted around 800-million Chinese people out of extreme poverty. In February 2021, President Xi Jinping announced that his country - whose population is similar to that of Africa’s and around four times larger than the US’s - had fully eradicated extreme poverty, accounting for nearly 75% of global poverty reduction during this period.
👍15💯4
Continued….. While China's economic model has lifted its population into a growing middle class, in the US, that class has dwindled as a result of a system that benefits a wealthy few rather than the majority. Yet, China remains the target of much American public anger over economic woes. In this video, TikToker @neil778027 delves deeper into the comparison between the US and China. He explains why the US struggles with crumbling infrastructure, rising healthcare costs, educational barriers (student-loan debt totalled $1.777 trillion in 2024), growing income inequalities and limited social mobility. Meanwhile, China’s economic model is designed to transform the daily lives of its citizens through better infrastructure, healthcare Washington invests more in imperialism - under the guise of 'defence' - and military might than it does on social programmes to improve the livelihoods of Americans at home. Consequently, it has played a prominent role in the destabilisation of countries of the Global South, such as the Congo, where a US- and Belgian-backed assassination k*lled the country's revolutionary leader, Patrice Lumumba.

As African countries continue to chart a path for their own economies, perhaps it is time to stop relying on Western debt and remember that there are other socio-political and economic models, beyond Western capitalist ones, that are built around the needs of the majority.

WHY FRANCE OWES HAITI

Haiti’s present woes are often looked at without reference to the historic injustices it has suffered or the West’s relentless meddling in its political and economic affairs. Together, these factor have led to the crisis engulfing the nation today.

In our video, African Stream’s @Sannario_ takes a journey back to 200 years ago, when Haitians - after fiercely fighting for their freedom - were forced to pay their former slave masters. The Haitian Indemnity Agreement is a colonial ransom that Haiti spent over 120 years paying as punishment for daring to demand dignity. This amounted to a staggering $20 billion in today’s money, which could have transformed the first Black-led republic into a flourishing nation - but was instead used to trap it in a cycle of turmoil.
