ISRAELI RACISM: A THING OF THE PAST?

Twelve years ago, Israel acknowledged that it had administered birth control injections to Ethiopian-Jewish immigrants without their knowledge or consent. Initially, the government had rejected the allegation.

Suspicions were first raised by Israeli journalist Gal Gabbay, who spoke with over 30 Ethiopian women - in a bid to understand the significant decline in birth rates in the community within the span of a decade. She uncovered that thousands of Ethiopian Jews had been receiving Depo-Provera (hormonal birth control) injections every three months for years at Israeli clinics.

In this video, author and influencer @marquettdavon (IG) raises the issue with an Israeli citizen, who dismisses talk of the sterilisation programme as a conspiracy - noting that he has Ethiopian friends who’ve never mentioned it, and that, in any case, it was long ago.

As @marquettdavon then points out, the territorial claims of the Torah were also made ‘long ago’. If you want to own your past, own all of it.

US strikes on Somalia have surged under Donald Trump - as they did during his first term. US presidents one after another haven’t been able to leave the African country alone - ever since the 1993 ‘Black Hawk down’ humiliation. Though posturing as an anti-terrorism campaign, Somali civilians keep getting caught in US crosshairs - with rights groups alleging possible war crimes. Swipe through for the key facts.

AFROCENTRIC SCHOOLS RULE!

At independence, African countries typically inherited a European model of education. But a quiet revolution is unfolding in Kenya. At the centre of this transformation is Children in Freedom School - the country’s first place of learning with an Afrocentric approach.

Located in Nakuru, the school curriculum is based on African culture, values and languages. Kids study African history, philosophy and indigenous knowledge systems, and are tested in their local languages too.

In an age where African languages are often downgraded, and sometimes outright banned in Westernised classrooms, this school is reclaiming what was taken away.

We paid a visit, and definitely give them top marks! What do you think?

‘ALIENS DID IT!’ A RACIST CONSPIRACY

The colonisation of Africa did not only target our resources and political systems - it also went for minds. The colonialists went to great lengths to control not only how we perceive ourselves but also how the rest of the world perceives Africa. They portrayed it as a place that lacked any form of civilisation before the colonisers stepped on our shores. The only problem with this theory is that the continent is awash with many ancient, pre-colonial African civilisations, as shown by the pyramids in the north of the continent, the Great Zimbabwe Monument and the legendary city of Timbuktu, among other marvels. To explain away this glaring refutation of the colonialists’ presumed civilisational superiority, they came up with an even more racist solution, suggesting that these African wonders are the work of aliens and not the local African people. African Stream's Clinton Nzala examines this ridiculous theory.

The Kenyan government is determined to curb the revolution through sheer force, hoping to instil fear in the masses. However, they are meeting resistance from a generation of young people no longer willing to watch their country crumble under the feet of neo-colonial corruption and injustice.

On 25 June, thousands of protesters poured into Nairobi and other Kenyan cities to mark one year since Kenyan police k*lled at least 60 unarmed civilians in 2024 who opposed an International Monetary Fund-backed finance bill that catered to Western interests instead of the Kenyan people.

United in their call for change, yesterday’s protesters demanded the resignation of President William Ruto and the restructuring of the entire political system. Despite being met with state violence in the form of tear gas, arrests, broad daylight extrajudicial k*llings and intimidation, these brave citizens remain determined to take back their country.

The government of Zambia and the family of the country’s ex-president, Edgar Chagwa Lungu, are tussling over his final resting place. Just hours before his funeral at a private ceremony in South Africa, a South African court ordered a halt to the burial.

Zambia’s Attorney General had filed an urgent court application in Pretoria - arguing that Lusaka must fulfil its constitutional role and provide Lungu with a state funeral. The government of Zambia under Hakainde Hichilema wants the body to be repatriated to Zambia and the former president to be buried there with full military honours, as mandated by Zambian law. It argues that the personal wishes of the family should not take precedence over the greater public interest.
Continued……..
The dispute follows a longstanding political rivalry between Lungu and the current president, Hichilema. Lungu’s family insist the late leader had specifically indicated that Hichilema should not attend his funeral. Lungu had imprisoned Hichilema for four months on charges of treason in 2017, and Hichilema defeated him in the 2021 election, triggering further disputes. Last year, Lungu accused Hichilema’s government of using the police to restrict his movements and effectively place him under house arrest.

Lungu, who was Zambia’s leader from 2015 to 2021, died of an undisclosed illness in a South African hospital on 5 June at the age of 68. The family wanted to be in charge of the funeral arrangements, but disagreements with the government over the details led to a deadlock. The Pretoria High Court says both parties have agreed to hold off on funeral arrangements until the question of where his funeral will be held is decided. There will be another hearing on 4 August.
