Africa has experienced record-breaking weather in recent years. With the first Africa Climate Summit currently underway in Nairobi, let's recap some extreme weather events in Africa and related facts.
1. The Horn of Africa endured five consecutive seasons without rainfall from 2020 through 2022. More than 20-million people in the region faced severe hunger, with Somalia hardest hit, according to the World Food Programme.
2. Mozambique, Malawi and Madagascar experienced the longest-lasting tropical cyclone on record. Cyclone Freddy killed hundreds, devastated homes and displaced more than half a million people.
3. West Africa was overwhelmed by floods in 2022, which destroyed farms and crops, displaced over 3-million people and killed hundreds.

4. Activists point out that not everyone has contributed to climate change in the same way. The world's richest 10% are responsible for half of greenhouse-gas emissions.
5. The poorest 50%, many of them in Africa, are only responsible for 10% of carbon emissions, despite an increase in population and energy consumption.
Scientists say the Global South is bearing the consequences of high carbon emissions from industrialised countries, which should contribute more towards achieving climate justice.

WESTERN CORPORATIONS STARVING AFRICA?
More than 140 million people across Africa face acute hunger, according to last year's Global Report on Food Crises. But this is not because the continent lacks any capacity to feed itself.
It’s partly because African food producers are pushed out of local markets by Western corporations. In this video, Indian scholar and food sovereignty advocate, Vandana Shiva, explains how. American governments subsidise US food firms who then dump their products on global markets and undercut African suppliers.
What’s more, many African food producers are locked out of international trade by strict Western health and safety standards. While that may sound like a good thing, Shiva argues these are a simply a disguised barrier to maintain the market share of large Western corporations.
In other words, the rules governing food production are stacked against African producers.

The Bongo's reign in Gabon has come to end following last week's coup, or has it?
We look at the new military leader's links with the notoriously corrupt family and their shameless shady dealings with the French. Gabon is rich in petroleum and uranium, and France and the Bongo family have enriched themselves with it. Sadly, little's been done to lift the people of Gabon out of poverty. From accusations of rigged elections to multi-million pound backhanders, it's all there during the last five decades of Bongo rule.

ECCAS BLOC SUSPENDS GABON OVER COUP!
Gabon has been given the boot by regional bloc ECCAS (Economic Community of Central African States) - at least until coup leaders return power to deposed president Ali Bongo.
ECCAS made the announcement at a summit in member state Equatorial Guinea - and there’s some irony about that. The man in charge in Malabo is Teodoro Obiang, who himself came to power in a coup! That, though, didn’t stop him firmly condemning the coup at the summit and urging a tough response.
There’s reason to suspect that Ali Bongo’s fate has shaken Obiang. Equatorial Guinea’s president - like the Bongo dynasty - has been in power for a very long time, and has also enriched his family in the process. He could well be worried that his people might get ideas by events in Gabon if the coup is allowed to succeed.

That’s the view of motivational speaker and Pan-African activist, Umar Johnson.
He strongly believes the African Union has outlived its usefulness and a formal union of all African states into one federation would be a much better deal.
In this clip, he says former colonial powers are scared by the rise of independent leaders in Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali and Guinea. And he wants those countries to be the founding members of a new USA.

‘QUICK’ FRENCH NIGER EXIT
Niger believes French troops will soon leave the West African nation. It follows the recent coup in Niamey which saw military leaders seize power and vow to cut links with the former coloniser. There are currently 1,500 French soldiers stationed in Niger as part of a regional counter-insurgency force. However, Niger’s new prime minister expects them to withdraw ‘quickly’ after the cancellation of a military co-operation agreement.

At a rally outside the event, they demanded immediate action to mitigate the impact of climate change on Africa - saying this must be led by communities, not boardrooms.
Africa has abundant renewable energy potential, such as solar power.
However, countries with large oil and gas reserves are attracting more investment in fossil fuels and are keen to use the proceeds to grow their economies.
The continent is responsible for less than 4% of emissions and - with 600-million people across Africa without access to electricity - there's debate on what a ‘just energy transition’ would really entail.
Delegates at the summit are seeking ways for a transition into clean energy without compromising human development.

A Chadian national was reportedly killed by a French solider - provoking angry protests. The incident happened at the French base in Faya-Largeau, Chad. Reports suggest the male victim was shot in the head, point blank, after an altercation. Apparently, he’d gone to seek treatment at the base’s health centre.
One senior official - Ahmat Bedei Toullomi, a member of Chad’s National Assembly and national adviser - posted an incandescent video. He said he would initiate ‘local mobilisation’ to drive out the French from their base if the killer ‘legionnaire’ was’t thrown into the ‘dungeon.’
