Today marks one year since Queen Elizabeth II's death, which led to heads of state worldwide offering their condolences, as well as an expensive state funeral costing British taxpayers over 200 million dollars. Elizabeth was not only the unelected British head of state, but due to a hangover from colonialism the monarch was still the head of state for fourteen 'commonwealth' nations. Eight of those nations belong to the Caribbean and it was nine before Barbados became independent in 2021 while the Queen was still alive.

Continued - And others in the Caribbean seem ready to follow suit, with officials in at least six countries signalling their intention to remove the monarch as their sovereign.

So what's their beef against the monarchy? Well, slavery and colonialism were a royal endeavour. The Royal African Company was the largest and most profitable transatlantic slave corporation of all time, making huge profits for the monarchy. And these profits were still possessed by Elizabeth II when she passed away last year. Much like the stolen jewels looted from former South Asia and Africa. Yet for both crimes, Elizabeth or the institution she represented for over 70 years never apologised or tried to make amends.

We look back at some of the Global South's grievances against Britain once ruled by Elizabeth II.

SUDAN: IS BURHAN WINNING?

Sudan’s devastating civil war seems to be entering a critical phase. The Sudanese army has pushed the RSF paramilitary out of the capital of South Darfur - where it had wanted to establish a stronghold. And it’s scored a propaganda win in the info war.

Could General Burhan finally be getting the upper hand on his arch rival Hemedti?

LOOTER-IN-CHIEF BRITISH MUSEUM GETS… LOOTED!

Western museums try to justify holding on to colonial-era African loot by claiming they keep it safe. Ignoring the racism in that assumption, the British Museum has just inadvertently exploded that argument - by letting itself get robbed of some 2,000 items by a member of staff. Worse, the precious artefacts were then sold-off to god-knows-whom for ludicrously cheap prices via eBay. Turns out the British Museum doesn’t keep a proper inventory of the 8-million or so items it ‘safeguards.’ We think it had better hand some of those items back to African nations who will definitely do a better job at looking after them (one reason being, of course, is that the artefacts are part of THEIR cultural heritage!).

END ZIMBABWE SANCTIONS NOW

Many people have heard of Zimbabwe's economic crisis, but what is the root cause? Much of the Western media insist that Zimbabweans suffer due to poor governance and general incompetence. What they fail to mention is the reality that sanctions have deprived Zimbabwe of $100 billion since 2001. That is nearly four times the size of Zimbabwe's current GDP. For over 150 years, the people of Zimbabwe have known nothing but settler colonialism and Western interference. As soon as this country overthrew colonialism and ended White-minority rule, it was immediately bullied by the West. Rich, powerful nations have continued to bully and torment Zimbabwe ever since.

NASSER BLASTING QUEEN ELIZABETH

As the world marks the first year anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II, the UK's longest-serving monarch, who died after reigning for over 70 years, we travel back in time to when former Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser responded to insults made by UK state broadcaster, the BBC, and blasted the British Queen, who was alive at the time. After coming out on top in the Suez Crisis, Nasser, was empowered as he had nationalised the strategic waterway and withstood attacks from Israel and colonial powers. That made him a hero at home, and he was cheered during this famous speech.

SOUTH AFRICA WANTS ITS DIAMONDS BACK

Today marks one year since Queen Elizabeth II's death, but many Africans have not forgotten the crimes the late monarch presided over on our continent.

To add insult to injury, the plundering of Africa was rubbed in our faces every time she wore her ‘royal wardrobe.’ That crown, that sceptre - all studded with jewels taken without consent from the continent, including one of the most impressive diamonds ever found. This latter was mined in South Africa, and South Africans say it’s time to hand the stones back!

AFRICA WARNS WEST ON CLIMATE

Africa’s first climate summit has ended with all countries agreeing to a blueprint for action. But despite signing up to the Nairobi Declaration, there’s plenty to resolve. Not least the contentious use of carbon credits to limit Africa’s ability to use its fossil fuels. Or the lack of cash coming from the West to help Africa repair extreme weather devastation caused by decades of industrialisation in the Global North. We look at the key takeaways from the three-day event in Kenya’s capital.

BONGO FREE TO LEAVE GABON

Gabon’s coup leaders say ousted president Ali Bongo can leave the country. He’d been detained at his palace residence since the military took charge last week following disputed elections. The takeover was led by General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, who’s reported to be Ali Bongo’s cousin. In a statement the military said the former president was free to travel abroad for medical treatment. Ali Bongo had ruled for over a decade and succeeded his father Omar who employed Nguema as a bodyguard. Their dynasty was mired in allegations of corruption and mirky business deals with former coloniser France.

TINUBU'S WIN UPHELD

Nigeria's president Bola Tinubu just got a boost after an appeals court upheld his win in February's poll.

The opposition had sought to overturn his victory with claims of widespread malpractices in the electoral process. It’s vowed to lodge an appeal with the Nigerian Supreme Court.

With a population of more than 200 million, Nigeria has about 87-million registered voters. 8.8-million voted for Tinubu.

The ruling is unlikely to generate euphoria for Tinubu, given the record-low voter turnout of 29%.

Nigeria is saddled with a big insecurity problem in the North, a failing economy, and massive oil theft that has punched a hole in government coffers.

MUSEVENI SNUBS AFRICA CLIMATE SUMMIT

While world leaders turned up for this week’s Africa Climate Summit, one African president was deliberately absent. Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni didn’t want to be part of the hypocrisy - according Kenyan media. Leaders of Nigeria and South Africa also failed to show up. And it's not hard to understand why. The root causes and solutions were barely acknowledged, namely the massive carbon footprint of other parts of the world. Probably because that would embarrass some big names in attendance.
Despite African branding, the Nairobi event was dominated by Western officials, from the EU’s von Der Leyen to US climate envoy John Kerry.

Continued - MUSEVENI SNUBS AFRICA CLIMATE SUMMIT

Despite African branding, the Nairobi event was dominated by Western officials, from the EU’s von Der Leyen to US climate envoy John Kerry.
Per capita America is the world’s biggest polluter, while Germany is shamelessly going back to using coal. All that while Africa is left suffering the impact of climate change brought on by the West's decades of industrialisation.

Floods have killed hundreds in Central Africa, while millions on the Horn of Africa are food insecure due to years of drought. A solution presented by the likes of John Kerry is to issue 'carbon markets'. That would see ‘credits’ bought and sold by companies to compensate for green house gas emissions. The real answer, is for major economies to stop polluting. Africa produces less than four per cent of global carbon emissions, so leave it alone. It’s simple.

Do you agree with the boycott by Museveni & Co.?

US ENVOY LIED: NO SOUTH AFRICAN WEAPONS WERE SENT TO RUSSIA

In May, US Ambassador to South Africa Reuben Brigety caused a diplomatic furore between the two nations after he sensationally alleged that South Africa had supplied weapons to Russia.

Brigety claimed that he had "airtight evidence" showing that a Russian ship named Lady R had picked up weapons from a South African port in December 2022. But an investigation panel appointed by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to investigate the matter has revealed that the claims were nothing but hot air.

Continued - According to the investigation led by a retired Supreme Court judge, the ship in question did indeed dock in a South African port but only to offload weapons that the South African military had ordered in 2018 through a UAE-based company; not to pick up weapons as alleged by Brigety. In response to the report, the ruling African National Congress and the South African Communist Party have called Ramaphosa to give the envoy the boot. But while Ramaphosa is unlikely to demand that Washington recalls Brigety, he has admitted that the false allegations caused significant economic and political damage to the country.

He cited the depreciation of the country's currency to a three year low shortly after the allegations were made, and said this was due to fears of a possibility of US sanctions.

The incident joins the long list of times that the US government or its officials have lied. Remember the story about Iraq's "weapons of mass destruction" or the bombing of a Sudanese pharmaceutical plant

MANDELAS BURN UK OVER ‘IMMIGRANT INVASION’ RHETORIC

The UK recently adopted a new law that criminalises migrants who arrive into the UK via the English channel. Violators will deported back to their home countries if deemed safe, and to Rwanda if not - regardless of origin. Anti-migrant sentiment has long been whipped up by the British media, with headlines scare-mongering about an ‘invasion’ of immigrants.

That choice of concept - invasion - is ironic. In this clip, Nelson Mandela’s daughter and granddaughter - Pumla and Tukwini - remind us that Britain’s wealth and power derive from its having invaded, colonised and plundered other countries. Moreover, without an ‘invasion’ of immigrants - of cheap, exploitable labour - the UK’s infrastructure and economy would never have been able to ‘develop’ they way it did.
