The great Tupac Shakur - rapper, actor and activist - died on this day, 27 years ago.

There’s no better tribute than his own music. In this clip, he delivers an ‘unplugged’ rendition of his classic ‘Keep Ya Head Up’ - performed in the intimate setting of a classroom of students.

And what an education the lyrics are. The song’s message - about respect for women and female empowerment - still packs a punch.

Tupac had a knack like no other for representing his community’s struggles, for giving a voice to marginalised Africans in America.

A true music revolutionary, he deserves not just to be remembered for his controversial death but also celebrated for his life and the passion of his lyrics and art.

Rest in power, brother.

LIBYA FLOODING KILLS THOUSANDS

Thousands are dead or missing after a massive storm smashed northeast Libya. Two dams collapsed near the coastal city of Derna which was hit by catastrophic flooding. It's reported entire neighbourhoods were swept into the sea. The death toll stands at over 6,000 and climbing, while over 10,000 are missing. Derna morgues are already full, with bodies left outside. Eight months worth of rain fell in just a few hours with little warning given to residents. Several other cities were badly affected, including Benghazi.

Experts say the storm grew from a strong low pressure in the Mediterranean which turned into a powerful cyclone. Flags are flying at half-mast in Tripoli as aid from western Libya and outside the country starts to arrive.

However, the international response has been underwhelming compared to the help offered to earthquake-hit Morocco. Libya has little capacity to deal with the crisis, after a civil war broke out following the bombing of the country in 2011.

TUPAC: WHY YOUR NAME MATTERS

On September 13th, 1996, we lost a great warrior. Tupac Amaru Shakur joined the ancestors while leaving a lasting mark on the culture - and the struggle. Tupac was more than just a rapper, he was an activist committed to African liberation in America. He came from a long line of dedicated African revolutionaries, from his mother Afeni Shakur, who was a member of the Black Panther Party, to his stepfamily/god family, which included revolutionaries such as Mutulu and Assata Shakur. His political evolution was natural. While in high school, he developed his talents as a conscious rapper while receiving political education from the Young Communist League in Baltimore. Following in his family footsteps, Tupac embarked on an African nationalist pathway at 18, joining the New Afrikan Panther Party. They fought for community control and against violent police while advocating for the release of political prisoners.

NIGER: FRANCE READYING TO ATTACK

Niger is warning of an attack by France. It claims Paris has deployed men and gear to nearby West African countries - including a warship now allegedly docked in Benin, which has prompted Niamey to cut military cooperation with Porto-Novo.

The coup in Niger is over a month old and enjoys popular support on the ground. Regional bloc ECOWAS - with the backing of France - early on threatened to intervene militarily if the coup wasn’t reversed, but so far hasn’t acted, though it’s standby force has been activated.

Any war - with or without French boots on the ground - would have catastrophic and far-reaching consequences for the region. Burkina Faso and Mali have vowed to treat any attack on Niger as an attack on themselves.

‘EVEN AFRICAN THIEVES ARE UNPATRIOTIC!’

Pan-Africanist Brian Kagaro says a Black inferiority complex is holding back Africans - so much so that corrupt African politicians don’t even spend or keep their ill-gotten gains in their own continent, choosing to funnel them into the West instead.

He says Africa needs new leadership models fast, as a generation of young people will otherwise repeat the mistakes of the past. But he also argues we need to harness the experience and expertise of older generations from outside politics and that we need to be less leader-centric. Watch him make the case, and let us know if you agree.

'RUSSIA WANTS PARTNERS NOT COLONIES'

Russian President Vladimir Putin says his country has no imperialist ambitions in Africa or any part of the world. Speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum, Putin said unlike other nations that have historically thrived on exploiting other nations, Moscow wants to continue with its legacy of working with other countries on a mutually beneficial basis. He cited an example of how the Soviet Union, of which Russia was a major component, helped African nations during their fight against colonial regimes, at a time when some Western countries displayed Africans in cages at so-called human zoos. He said his government will continue to work with both new and old partners to enhance their economic and social development.

NIGER CAPTURES FRENCH CROISSANTS

Have Niger’s coup leaders just found France’s weak spot?

Thousands of croissants heading for the French military base in Niamey were intercepted. Local youths, who’re part of the ‘support committee and citizen vigil initiative’ stopped a van packed with pastries. So far, Niger’s attempts to get the 1,500 French troops to leave the country have failed. That’s despite axing water and electricity supplies to their barracks. Will this latest move cutting croissant supplies be the last straw for Paris? After seizing power this summer, Niger’s new government ended military accords with former coloniser France. It also told the French ambassador to pack his bags, although he’s also refusing to do so. The question is: do they have the stomach to stick around without their traditional flakey bread?

EU-CHINA PARTNERSHIP IN AFRICA?

China and Europe should work together to help Africa develop.

That’s according to Singapore's former top diplomat George Yeo, who fears Brussels has another agenda. In this clip, he questions why the EU views Africa as a stage on which to compete with Beijing.

And also highlights the destruction caused by colonial powers on the continent over the last 400 years.

Mr Yeo was giving a key-note speech to the European University Institute in Florence a few years ago.
And his address captivated the euro-centric audience. After all, why shouldn’t China and Europe work together in Africa’s best interests? Or is that just impossible?

‘YOU’RE TREATY BREAKERS
LIARS AND THIEVES’

Watch this Black barber give a visiting mister a fade on the character of White supremacy. Ernie Chambers, also Nebraska’s longest serving state senator, rips the myth of American exceptionalism. The West’s success, he claims, is born out of breaking treaties, pillaging entire continents and killing their people.
The moment was captured during a 1966 American documentary “Time for Burning.”

In it, local White minister L. William Youngdahl reaches out to Black parishioners and visits a barber shop.
But he gets more than an earful from Ernie Chambers who’s working there.

Continued- ‘YOU’RE TREATY BREAKERS LIARS AND THIEVES’

In a single minute he lays bare the strength of feeling and injustices of the ‘system.’ And accuses the minister, who had an all-White congregation, of benefiting from it. It’s a powerful clip and the documentary was nominated for an Academy Award.

But the interview still resonates. Most of Africa continues to reel from centuries of exploitation and enslavement.

Outside the continent, Africans in America suffer greater poverty than their White counterparts. And in geopolitics, the weaponisation of the dollar and sanctions have contributed to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people.

‘UK WON'T APOLOGISE FOR JACK ****'

Will reality finally dawn on Britain when it comes to its brutal colonial past? UK independent journalist and youtuber, Gordon Dimmack, thinks there’s going to be a cold wake-up call. In this viral clip, he sums up what many African countries have known for a long time. Britain’s burned its bridges with the continent after exploiting and enslaving it for centuries. And when the UK needs resources in the future - Africa won’t be offering help. What makes the situation worse, is Britain’s refusal to apologise for its past behaviour. But according to Dimmack, it can’t admit to that otherwise it would have to “give back all the stuff it’s stolen.” It’s a refreshing change to hear this sort of commentary come out of the UK. Have a listen and tell us if he’s got it right.

CRISIS IN LIBYA TODAY RESULT OF NATO IN 2011

The massive storm that smashed Libya has killed tens of thousands. A crisis made worse by the North African country’s limited capacity to deal with the crisis. According to Western media, that’s due to the “lawlessness” that’s engulfed Libya for years. Let’s be more specific.
It’s due to NATO’s destruction of Africa’s most-wealthy country in 2011 and assassination of long-time ruler Muammar Gaddafi. NATO bombed Libya over 7,700 times in 7 months.

From that point Libya spiralled into a catastrophic civil war. Before 2011, the country had specialised agencies for disaster response.

Continued - CRISIS IN LIBYA TODAY RESULT OF NATO IN 2011

It had huge financial resources from its oil sector and sovereign wealth fund. It even sent $2m in aid to the Maldives after a tsunami in 2005.

Those oil fields have now been crippled and funds have dried up. What’s more, rival governments compete for power making a co-ordinated disaster response impossible.

There’s also an eerie silence from the West with regard to offering relief after Storm Daniel.

While everyone trips over themselves to aid Morocco following the tragic earthquake, Libya has not received the same level of solidarity, especially from the countries responsible for the dysfunction today. It shows it was never about Libyans, only their oil and a desire to neutralise the West’s perceived threat of Gaddafi.

PLO: WE’VE GOT A LEADERSHIP PROBLEM!

Pan-African scholar PLO Lumumba recently discussed the elephant in the room: the dire state of African political leadership.

Branding some of our heads state ‘thieves’ and urging African citizens to pile pressure on their governments and make demands, he explained how those who are not interested in the wellbeing of their nations are holding them back.

Referencing the ongoing war in Sudan, he urges the African Union and Africans across the world to solve their own problems - rather than be summoned to mediated talks by nations like the US and Saudi Arabia outside of African territory.

ELITE HYPOCRISY OVER MAUI

The tragic wildfires on Maui have seen celebrities mobilise - and urge their fans via Instagram and TikTok to make donations to help those affected.

That’s all good and well, except it’s a bit galling when those celebs are a billionaire and a multimillionaire - aka Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne Johnson 'The Rock' respectively - asking us to part with our money. While they pledged $10 million themselves, that only represents a minuscule fraction of their combined wealth.

The Jimmy Dore Show recently collected some reactions. Have a watch of this one, and let us know your own. Should Oprah and Dwayne Johnson have pledged more if they were going to ask their fans to cough up? Or maybe it’s their rich celebrity mates they should have called on first?
