PALESTINIAN DISPLACEMENT MEANS LAND GRAB
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has warned the forced displacement of Palestinians could be used by Israel to seize the little remaining Palestinian territory referred to as the Gaza Strip. Israel ordered Palestinians in northern Gaza to move south to avoid being hit in a military attack. But many Palestinians have stayed put, fearing their departure will be permanent. Various United Nations members and Arab states have condemned Israel’s actions as a violation of the Geneva Conventions that govern the impact of war on civilians.
Israel has cut access to water, food and electricity, and restricted entry of aid. Despite ordering civilians to vacate, Israel this week bombed the only border crossing point south into Egypt at Rafah. On Tuesday, a now-deleted tweet from Netanyahu’s press officer admitted the Israeli Air Force bombed a Gazan hospital killing 500.

Continued….The most recent escalation has once again put the Palestinian question on the front and it has isolated the United States and Israel in West Asia. Countries such as Saudi Arabia, which were progressing toward normalising relations with Israel, now have the statehood of Palestine as a precondition. Following the hospital bombing, a planned summit between US President Joe Biden and the leaders of Egypt and Jordan was scrapped.
At the UN, two times this week, the United States has vetoed resolutions calling for a ceasefire and entry of aid into Gaza. It continues decades of US complicity that abets Israeli atrocities against an enclave, where half its population is made up of children.
Let us know what you think of the Egyptian president’s remarks.

The contrasting World reaction to the missile strike on a Gaza Strip hospital could not be more stark. African leaders accuse Israel of targeting the facility and killing hundreds of Palestinians. They demand an end to hostilities and say Tel Aviv is guilty of war crimes and genocide. The EU, France, Britain and the USA (who voted against a Russian-tabled UN resolution for a ceasefire just before the hospital attack) say they are ‘saddened’ and want an investigation to ‘establish’ the facts. Israel denies the atrocity, blaming it on a misfired rocket from Gaza. However, some military analysts believe only Israel has such powerful weapons in this conflict. We’ve put together statements by governments and leaders in the wake of the horror. Read them and give us your response.

WHO KILLED MOZAMBIQUE’S PRESIDENT?
On this night back in 1986, a plane crashed killing Mozambique’s President Samora Machel. But why it ploughed into mountains on the border with South Africa remains a mystery. We look at suspicions the apartheid regime was behind the tragedy following years of conflict with Maputo. Machel was a roaring revolutionary and Pan-Africanist who not only liberated his homeland from colonial rule but also supported South African liberation movements seeking to rid the continent of the last vestiges of colonialism. At the time of the fatal crash he was only 53 years old.

October 19th, 1978 was one of the darkest days in the history of Zambia - and a glaring example of how far colonial occupation forces will go to perpetuate their oppressive systems.
On this day, the country came under attack from the racist Southern Rhodesia regime. The attacks targeted the Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU) party - a Zambia-based Zimbabwean liberation movement fighting against the Rhodesian regime.
Codenamed Operation Gatling, the attack was originally planned for the 16th but was postponed after the Rhodesians received intelligence that ZAPU's military wing, ZIPRA, would be holding a passing-out parade on the 19th - with most of its senior leaders in attendance. This was seen as the ideal opportunity to decapitate the force.
The first target was Freedom Camp, a refugee and transit centre located 16 km outside the Zambian capital, Lusaka - which the Rhodesians suspected harboured rebel fighters.

Continued…Just after 8.30 am, Rhodesian jets suddenly appeared and started indiscriminately bombing the camp, giving little chance to the people inside to react. Moments later, helicopters dropped paratroopers to finish off survivors.
Almost simultaneously, an attack was also launched on the Mkushi camp, a ZIPRA facility hosting female freedom fighters some 150 km north of Lusaka. Similar tactics were employed, with jets bombing the camp before paratroopers descended in to kill survivors.
During the attack, the Rhodesians also deployed jets to fly over the main Zambia Air Force base - to ensure no planes were scrambled.
In total, three ZIPRA camps were attacked within hours, more than 1,000 bombs dropped and over 1,000 people killed.
While the attack was celebrated as a military victory by the Rhodesians, it was a dismal political failure, as it only strengthened the resolve of the liberation movement. Less than two years later, after the massacre, the racist regime collapsed - a testament to the fact that no amount of violence or brutality can stop a people determined to free themselves.

AFRO-PALESTINIANS: A STORY OF RACISM & RESISTANCE!
While the world is glued to the brutal Israeli bombing campaign in Gaza that has killed at least 1,000 Palestinian children, 3480 Palestinians in total and wounded 12,065, we look back on the history of the Afro-Palestinian community.
Africans arrived in the now-occupied territories through pilgrimages, post-war labour drives, and a call to arms to protect Palestinians.
Here’s a quick history lesson by social media content creator Fassah Speaks on their trials and tribulations on the path to the holy city of Jerusalem.

GADDAFI: ‘AFRICA FOR AFRICANS!’
It’s 12 years to the day since Muhammad Gaddafi was assassinated by NATO-backed forces and his body paraded for the world to see. And it’s fiery speeches like this one here that probably made the former Libyan leader a marked man from the start. In it, his staunch Pan-Africanist, anti-imperialist views are on display - he passionately urges Africans to unite and rise up, assuring them that, together, they are strong enough to liberate their continent.
Another thing that no doubt made it easier for the likes of France and the US to green-light the NATO intervention that deposed the ‘king of kings’ was that he pushed hard for a common currency in Africa - posing a direct challenge to the financial exploitation of the CFA franc and dollar hegemony on our continent.
Do you wish he were still with us?

DID US-USSR
NUCLEAR RIVALRY
KILL LUMUMBA?
Nothing will wind racists up more than the object of their hate showing some audacity. When Patrice Lumumba - as DRC’s founding leader - had the audacity to think it was up to the Congolese to decide what to do with their precious minerals, it didn’t go down well with the West. Especially as one of those precious minerals was uranium, and one of the Western powers - the US. America was in a nuclear arms race with arch-rival the USSR at the time. UK-based Ugandan award-winning spoken-word artist George the Poet (@georgethepoet) delivers this powerful piece breaking it all down - if you enjoy it, check out his podcast series.

ISRAEL CAUGHT IN A LIE?
The war in Gaza is as much an info war as one between Israel and militant groups embedded in densely populated urban areas - as the bitter claims and counter-claims over what happened at the Al-Ahli hospital make clear.
The UK’s Channel Four News has weighed in with evidence that the Israeli side may be lying. It asked two independent Arab journalists to listen to a recording that Tel Aviv says is of Hamas operatives discussing a failed rocket launched by Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ). Both said it was fake, citing clumsy Arabic language use.
On top of that, the programme’s chief correspondent notes that Israel gave conflicting statements about where the rocket was supposed to have been launched from. But Alex Thomson also points out that PIJ claims to have an incriminating Israeli warhead - yet, for some reason, they aren’t showing it to the world.

TURNING THEIR BACKS ON U.S. REP
A majority of about 140 participants protested 18 October against a US ambassador speaking at the United Nations Human Rights Committee meeting held in Geneva, Switzerland. The silent protest involved activists standing up and turning their backs while US Permanent Representative to the UN Human Rights Council Michèle Taylor gave her final remarks. The activists, hailing from all over the world, claimed Taylor had provided insufficient explanations for their human-rights concerns. This meeting was the first review of US compliance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

This protest comes in the wake of the United States voting down a second UN Security Council resolution that failed this week. The Brazilian draft on 18 October called for humanitarian aid to be delivered to the more than 2 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, as well as a condemnation of Palestinian resistance group Hamas. That came after Russia's 16 October resolution was rejected. It called for a ceasefire in the military escalation that began 7 October in the occupied Palestinian territories, as well as delivery of aid.
Let us know what you think of the silent protest.

AFRICAN UNION OPPOSED KILLING OF GADDAFI
How the UN Security Council chose to handle Libya regarding the killing of the country's former ruler, Muammar Gaddafi, speaks volumes about Africa's standing on the global stage. We are still marginalized, discriminated and disrespected. That is what former Permanent Representative of the African Union to the United States Dr Arikana Chihombori-Quao spoke about during a 2020 Q&A session at the World Affairs Council. She shared her discontent with how Gaddafi was taken out. The Security Council went against the African Union's wishes to intervene, and those actions have led to the current instability in Libya.

Why France Lingered In Niger
Nigerien Minister of the Interior General Mohamed Toumba explained France's refusal to leave Niger on time after their military contract was dissolved. The new Nigerien government under the leadership of Abdourahamane Tchiani, president of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, ordered French troops out of Niger in August, giving the soldiers until 2 September to evacuate. However, the French military only began its exit on 10 October. In this video, Toumba speculated France's troops on the ground may number more than the 1,500 troops France has publicised. The general also gave his opinion on why they lingered for so long during a 3 October meeting in the Nigerien capital of Niamey.
Let us know in the comments if you agree with Toumba.
