ISRAEL CAUGHT IN A LIE?

The war in Gaza is as much an info war as one between Israel and militant groups embedded in densely populated urban areas - as the bitter claims and counter-claims over what happened at the Al-Ahli hospital make clear.

The UK’s Channel Four News has weighed in with evidence that the Israeli side may be lying. It asked two independent Arab journalists to listen to a recording that Tel Aviv says is of Hamas operatives discussing a failed rocket launched by Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ). Both said it was fake, citing clumsy Arabic language use.

On top of that, the programme’s chief correspondent notes that Israel gave conflicting statements about where the rocket was supposed to have been launched from. But Alex Thomson also points out that PIJ claims to have an incriminating Israeli warhead - yet, for some reason, they aren’t showing it to the world.

TURNING THEIR BACKS ON U.S. REP

A majority of about 140 participants protested 18 October against a US ambassador speaking at the United Nations Human Rights Committee meeting held in Geneva, Switzerland. The silent protest involved activists standing up and turning their backs while US Permanent Representative to the UN Human Rights Council Michèle Taylor gave her final remarks. The activists, hailing from all over the world, claimed Taylor had provided insufficient explanations for their human-rights concerns. This meeting was the first review of US compliance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

Continued - TURNING THEIR BACKS ON U.S. REP

This protest comes in the wake of the United States voting down a second UN Security Council resolution that failed this week. The Brazilian draft on 18 October called for humanitarian aid to be delivered to the more than 2 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, as well as a condemnation of Palestinian resistance group Hamas. That came after Russia's 16 October resolution was rejected. It called for a ceasefire in the military escalation that began 7 October in the occupied Palestinian territories, as well as delivery of aid.

Let us know what you think of the silent protest.

AFRICAN UNION OPPOSED KILLING OF GADDAFI

How the UN Security Council chose to handle Libya regarding the killing of the country's former ruler, Muammar Gaddafi, speaks volumes about Africa's standing on the global stage. We are still marginalized, discriminated and disrespected. That is what former Permanent Representative of the African Union to the United States Dr Arikana Chihombori-Quao spoke about during a 2020 Q&A session at the World Affairs Council. She shared her discontent with how Gaddafi was taken out. The Security Council went against the African Union's wishes to intervene, and those actions have led to the current instability in Libya.

What do you think of Chihombori-Quao's remarks? Let us know in the comments.

Why France Lingered In Niger

Nigerien Minister of the Interior General Mohamed Toumba explained France's refusal to leave Niger on time after their military contract was dissolved. The new Nigerien government under the leadership of Abdourahamane Tchiani, president of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, ordered French troops out of Niger in August, giving the soldiers until 2 September to evacuate. However, the French military only began its exit on 10 October. In this video, Toumba speculated France's troops on the ground may number more than the 1,500 troops France has publicised. The general also gave his opinion on why they lingered for so long during a 3 October meeting in the Nigerien capital of Niamey.

Let us know in the comments if you agree with Toumba.

JEWS DEFEND PALESTINE

“We must unite, or we perish!” That's how Ghanaian President and Prime Minister Kwame Nkrumah famously put it 25 May 1963, at the founding of the Organisation of African Unity in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Such was the sentiment on 18 October, when about 10,000 pro-Palestine supporters took the streets of Washington, D.C., according to Jewish Voice for Peace, which organised the multi-faceted demonstration. The group demanded that the United States push for a ceasefire in the latest escalation of the conflict between Israel and Palestine. The group's action also included a sit-in protest of about 200 people inside the rotunda of the Cannon House Office Building, where an unknown number of people were arrested. About 500 other protesters blocked off Independence Avenue in Washington, D.C.

Demonstrators chanted, "The world is watching," while wearing black T-shirts emblazoned with messages, "Jews Say Cease Fire Now" and "Not in Our Name."

Continued - JEWS DEFEND PALESTINE

The action comes after the United States, on 18 October, voted down a second UNSC resolution that Brazil drafted, calling for aid delivery to be allowed into the Gaza Strip.

Israel's 17 October attack on a hospital in Gaza City exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in the enclave. The Israeli state has threatened to target hospitals to root out the Palestinian resistance group Hamas. Meanwhile, Israel conducted air strikes on 17 October on the Rafah border crossing in Egypt, where trucks containing aid sent by several countries and the UN await entrance into the Gaza Strip.

The US Capitol has been called a "symbol of democracy.” However, the United States overwhelmingly backs the Israeli military response that has killed about 3,480 Palestinians and displaced an estimated more than 1 million people, or close to half of the Gaza Strip's population. Protesters occupied the Capitol because it symbolises gunboat diplomacy, military conquests, economic attacks and, presently, support for Israel slaughtering innocent adults and children in occupied Palestine.

Let us know what you think of this protest.

SOMALIA'S SOCIALIST REVOLUTION

The 54th Anniversary of Somalia's Socialist Revolution celebrates a moment of pride for many Somalis, yet despite a promising start, it would end in a bloody civil war. We take a look back at the history and some of the achievements of the revolution.

Known by Somalis as 'the golden era', Siad Barre's socialist administration was famous for introduction of a written Somali language still used today in Djibouti, Ethiopia and Somalia, the award-winning literacy campaigns, healthcare improvements, universal education and better infrastructure. His government also dealt with a drought and prevented a famine. Somalia was geopolitically active as well, a staunch adherent of Pan-African principles. It famously lobbied at the UN for an arms embargo on Portugal until its African colonies were free.

AKALA: CHINA DEVELOPING
JAMAICA

Despite many reservations about China's actions, one undeniable fact remains: They are investing in Jamaica's infrastructure, a step that Britain failed to take in 300 years. This has resulted in cutting travel time to Montego Bay in half, benefiting the Jamaican economy.

Jamaicans, with whom musician Akala spoke, indicated their grievances are more directed toward the global capitalist system instead of China’s actions.

Akala said in this August 2018 discussion at the Edinburgh International Book Festival that the Chinese response to rejected projects in Jamaica has not been aggressive or retaliatory. Instead, they propose alternative business deals, and demonstrate a willingness to engage in constructive negotiations.

This stands in stark contrast to historical patterns of intervention by other major international powers like France, the United Kingdom and the United States.

AFRICAN WOMEN THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ON THE PLANET

I’m sure we don’t have to convince many of you that African women are among the most beautiful in the world! But did you know that they were thus regarded even by the ancient Greeks? The horrible abuse and humiliation African women had to endure during the era of slavery and oppression has clouded the fact that they were worshipped as ideals of beauty far and wide for thousands of years. Watch African historian Dr. Edward Robinson eloquently relate this lovely bit of history about just how highly honoured African women really were - literally as high as the heavens!

SHEIKH JARRAH STILL FIGHTS BACK

In occupied East Jerusalem, the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood has been a hot spot of colonisation attempts through eviction claims that Palestinians have fought. In May 2021, Sheikh Jarrah was one of the critical escalation points in one of Israel's previous major attacks on the Gaza Strip, located miles away from the neighbourhood. But, in 2023, Sheikh Jarrah still holds on to its indigenous Palestinian roots.

In this video, a Palestinian tour guide gave a tour to Norwegian tourists on 19 June when an Israeli coloniser verbally attacked him.

It's a reminder that while Israeli bombs dropping on children in Gaza get the most attention, the process of Palestinian ethnic cleansing has been a wide-ranging and painful process for the past 75 years.

It's also worth remembering that Theodor Herzl, the founder of the modern Zionism movement, initially suggested Uganda become a Jewish state.

So, had history taken a different turn, the European settler on this video would be saying, "All this belongs to Israel" while standing on African land, much like European settlers have spoken in northern and southern Rhodesia, Namibia, and South Africa!
