ROTTEN DEAL: EU SCUTTLES SENEGAL FISHING

Nothing worse than the smell of rotting fish. Unless it’s the smell of a rotten deal with the EU that not only endangers artisanal fishing in Senegal but also gives away more of Africa’s precious resources at bargain rates.

WHAT NATO DESTROYED IN LIBYA

Muammar Gaddafi ruled Libya for over 40 years but was ousted and assassinated by NATO-backed rebels in 2011. The former leader’s spokesperson Moussa Ibrahim describes Gaddafi’s achievements in his first 10 years in power. Gaddafi improved the lives of the Libyan people by upgrading all sectors of society like education, healthcare, the economy, and more. However, Western countries driven by fear of Gaddafi's plan to establish a single gold-backed African currency and an entirely new banking system for the continent which would have dealt a severe blow to the US Dollar, decided to back the rebellion.

MAYOTTE MANHUNT: FRANCE EXPULSIONS

France has sent cops to Mayotte, an African island part of the Comoros archipelago, more than 8,000km away from France. Although Mayotte is claimed by both France and Comoros, the cops are there to help expel what France calls 'illegal immigrants' most of whom are Comorians. Their plan is to send them to the neighbouring Comorian island of Anjouan, further complicating the situation as Comoros' President Azali Assoumani said they would not accept any of the migrants.

Mayotte Island became a French colony in 1843 and is still a French overseas department, although it is not part of the EU. It is an outermost region of the European Union and part of the Eurozone.

Perhaps that is why French authorities believe they have the right to expel Africans from the African Island.

IF AFRICA WAS UNITED

We sometimes get irritated when people ignore our differences and treat all Africans as if they belonged to one country. But diversity should be no barrier to unity. And when you start thinking about it, if Africa were a single, unified country - if 54 African nations were one - the result could be truly awesome: a cultural and economic superpower. Ahmed Ghoneim lets his imagination run wild at the prospect. Do you share his vision? How do you see it working?

TOGO INDEPENDENCE DAY

Sixty-three years ago today, the West African country of Togo declared its full independence from France and elected its first president Sylvanus Olympio. But it also marked the beginning of a new struggle. Olympio wanted to remove his country from the French-controlled CFA franc. Three years later, he was assassinated in front of the U.S embassy in Africa’s first post-colonial coup d'état. His killers were soldiers who’d served in the French army during the war in Algeria, and included Gnassingbé Eyadema. Four years later he ousted Olympio’s successor, Nicolas Grunitzky, during a military uprising. Eyadema went on to rule Togo for 38 years, winning many disputed elections. Following his death in 2005, he was succeeded by his son and current president Faure Gnassingbé. The country has faced political instability, economic challenges, regional conflicts and social unrest since its independence. And the assassination of its first leader continues to cast a long shadow. To this day it’s still unknown who ordered the killing, with Paris denying accusations it was involved.
