HOW APARTHEID MADE WHITE SOUTH AFRICANS RICH

White South Africans make up less than 10 per cent of the population but they hold more than two-thirds of the country’s wealth. And whenever they are questioned about this glaring anomaly, their response is often outright racist - to wit, that White people hold the country’s wealth because they are more hardworking than Black people!

However, this is far removed from the truth. Most of their wealth is a result of more than three centuries of colonial exploitation and racist laws that gave them an economic advantage over their Black counterparts.

Watch South African media personality Dan Corder explain the different racist policies and laws that the apartheid regime put in place to give White people a head start - one that they’re still profiting from today.

HOW EUROPE GASLIGHTS AFRICA OVER GAS

Since the day the first European set foot on African soil, the West has aggressively exploited the continent for its resources. From human beings to timber, resources have been looted from the continent to develop the West at the expense of Africa's own needs.

Centuries later, the system continues - albeit in a subtler manner.

In this clip, Zimbabwean environmental activist Lorraine Chiponda - speaking at the recent COP28 climate summit in UAE - explains how the people of Mozambique are not the ones benefiting from recently discovered massive gas deposits. Rather, it’s European firms and consumers.

Continued…..Chiponda actually belongs to the Don’t Gas Africa movement. This wants to ensure Africa isn’t locked into fossil-fuel production at all - but instead is given access to enough renewable energy to meet its needs.

What do you think - should Africa draw on its dirty energy while playing developmental catch-up? Or should it embark on the more difficult journey of going green from the get-go?

GHANA MARCHES FOR PALESTINE

Just as Israel is unrelenting in what has been called a genocide in Gaza, so is the global community undeterred in its support of Palestine. In this video, we see Ghanaians out in numbers for a show of solidarity with Palestinians, a break away from the president’s backing of Israel. This is just the latest in a series of marches in the West African country calling for a ceasefire and lasting solution to the Palestinian question.

Continued….Israel has killed more than 18,000 people in Gaza since October 7th, a city with half its residents are children. There has been international pressure that resulted in a week-long ceasefire, but the US has used its influence to further the killing of Palestinians. In addition to providing diplomatic cover at the UN, a lot of the weapons used on Palestinians have been manufactured in the US. Washington also provides over $3 billion a year in military aid and is in the process of disbursing another $14 billion. Cracks are, however, emerging as the backing of a genocidal regime has been wildly unpopular at home, marked by countless protests.

U.S. TEACHER THREATENS TO BEHEAD 13-YEAR OLD

A 51-year old middle-school teacher in Georgia, USA, was arrested last week, and bonded out of jail, for threatening to behead a 13-year old Muslim student, according to multiple witnesses. Benjamin Reese, reportedly became upset after the student said the presence of an Israeli flag in the classroom made her uncomfortable because of Israel's atrocities against the Palestinian people. Reese then proceeded to yell at student as she and her friends walked down the hallway. Witnesses said he called her 'you motherf*cking piece of sh*t!' and theatened to 'cut your motherf*cking head off!' He allegedly went on to say, 'She is a stupid motherf*cker, and I will drag her by the back of my car and cut her f*cking head off for disrespecting my Jewish flag.' Another witness reported to police that Reese said, 'You don’t make an antisemitic comment like that to a Jew,' and that he later shouted in the hallway that he would 'slit her f*cking throat.'

Continued…..This incident comes at a time of heightened global tension over the Israel bombardment of Gaza and the West Bank that began 7 October. According to Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, more than 23,000 civilians—and more than 9,000 children—have been killed so far. Israel continues its total blockade, preventing food, water, fuel and electricity supplies from entering Gaza, in violation of the Geneva Conventions that prohibit collective punishment of civilian populations. The United States and Israel have consistently voted against resolutions introduced in the United Nations that have called for a ceasefire and humanitarian aid delivery, with the latest resolution having been approved by most countries on 12 December 2023.

It's not just the West that's concerned by the three revolutionary governments of Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali joining forces to defend their borders against imperialism and jihadi terrorists. Al-Qaeda is clearly worried too.

In a 22-minute video published this week, the leader of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, Iyad Ag Ghaly, branded the countries’ new military leaders ‘treacherous.’ He then called for their citizens to join his ranks and fight against them.

You could call it a sign of desperation. Since the public-supported coups in these nations, Al-Qaeda has been on the back foot, losing swathes of territory with Mali recently taking the rebel stronghold of Kidal. Coincidentally (or not) such successes follow the expulsion of French troops from the region by the West African trio who accused them of backing insurgents.

Continued…..In August 2022, Mali's Foreign Minister, Abdoulaye Diop, alleged France was providing weapons and intelligence to terrorist groups. In a letter addressed to the United Nations Security Council, he stated: "These flagrant violations of Malian airspace were used by France to collect information for terrorist groups operating in the Sahel and to drop arms and ammunition to them."

For decades Western-aligned presidents in this part of Africa backed their former coloniser and welcomed their soldiers. That relationship has now been turned on its head by military takeovers backed by the majority of citizens. It’s something that's clearly rattling the West and now Al-Qaeda.

UN NEEDS REFORM ASAP

Bombs continue to rain down on Gaza, and the UN is clearly unable to do anything about it. The US keeps vetoing Security Council resolutions for a ceasefire, despite the Palestinian death toll now topping 18,000.

Countries around the world overwhelming voted for a halt in the violence at the UN General Assembly, but that resolution is non-binding. And it effectively means Israel’s catastrophic assault will continue.

Ahmed Ghoneim argues the desperate need for UN reform.

HOW RACIST IS DISNEY?

You know what they say: The best comedy always has a grain of truth to it. We think that is the case here when Matt Jenkins, a US-based stand-up comedian, brilliantly called out Disney executives for animating every other non-white ethnic group as humans. But, when it came time to depict Africans in 'The Lion King,' animals were the go-to.

Mulan, Pocahontas, Aladdin ... but we got Simba! Let us know what you think. Is he on the money or reaching?

ISRAEL ON CHARM OFFENSIVE

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu recently said his country and Africa are coming back together, as if it’s a reunion of old friends. But there are plenty of reasons to be wary. Netanyahu hasn’t exactly had our interests at heart before, with racist policies aimed at Africans in Israel.

So why the change of tune? We think he’s just trying to soften the continent’s traditional pro-Palestinian stance in a bid for much-needed votes at the UN. Ahmed Ghoneim runs through Israel’s dubious détente.
