RUTO TO EXPORT 2,500 KENYANS TO SAUDI

In yet another controversial announcement by Kenya’s president, William Ruto, 2,500 skilled labourers will be sent to work in Saudi Arabia. This is due to a mounting unemployment crisis at home and pressure to secure foreign currency. It is just days after his deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, urged the Kenyan diaspora to stay abroad, as the country has no jobs and the government continues to rely on remittances. This year, Kenyans had sent home $349 million, according to the Central Bank of Kenya. Earlier, Kenya’s government said it would send workers to Israel in the steps of Malawi.

Continued….The broader implications remain unaddressed. Labour and human rights abuses against Africans have been well documented in the Persian Gulf region, and no safeguards seem to have been put in place. Additionally, the opportunity cost of developing labour only to export means a manpower shortage for continental needs. As Kenya flagged off nurses to Europe, the town of Naivasha reported in July that 20 child deaths have occurred each month in a hospital.

Africa has a long way to go before development, and it is unclear how exporting the best of its talent will bridge the gap. Have a watch, and let us know what you think.

Some eights months after fighting broke out between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, civilians continue to pay the ultimate price.
Over 12,000 people have been killed and thousands more injured, according to the Armed Conflict and Event Data Project. The United Nations reckons nearly 25 million people desperately need humanitarian aid.
What’s more, the conflict is spreading with devastating consequences.
Not so long ago the city of Wad Madani, in east-central Sudan, was considered a safe haven for refugees. However, it’s now engulfed by fierce clashes, forcing a considerable chunk of its population to flee.

This is for the seven African countries who refused to back a UN resolution calling for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

The mayor of Northern Israeli town, Metula, has openly stated he wants Gaza flattened and turned into a museum ‘just like Auschwitz.’

In case you didn’t know, that’s the concentration camp in Poland where more than a million jews were killed by Nazi forces during the holocaust. David Azoulai’s disgusting comments come as the number Palestinians killed by Israel in just over two months approaches 20,000. Most of them are women and children.

Despite the massacre, Liberia voted against the recent UN General Assembly resolution, while Cameroon, Cape Verde, Equatorial Guinea, Malawi, South Sudan and Togo abstained. A shameful show of hands. As long as they continue to effectively support Israel, the likes of Azoulai will feel emboldened. There’s no excuse. ALL African countries must take a stand.

SOUTH AFRICA’S ANC LOSES APPEAL AMONG ITS FORMER LEADERS

Former South African president, Thabo Mbeki, has joined the long list of liberation stalwarts, who have turned their backs on the ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), over allegations of corruption and gross mismanagement.

Speaking during a public lecture in August at the University of South Africa in the capital of Pretoria, the ANC heavyweight said he would not campaign for the party he has called home for more than six decades if it does not change its trajectory. He accused the ANC of becoming a home for criminal, corrupt and greedy elements, a departure from the values it had espoused as a liberation movement fighting apartheid.
👍6
Continued….In recent months, the ANC, which is the continent’s oldest liberation movement, has the lost support of both ordinary citizens and its former officials. Opinion polls indicate 2024 will hand the party its worst electoral performance since coming into power in 1994.

The country has in recent years witnessed a rise in unemployment, violent crime and general economic decay, leading to rising anger against the ruling party. This has added to the frustration over the party’s perceived failure to transform apartheid-era economic structures that continue to confine many Black South Africans to the economic periphery.

South Africa is threatening to prosecute its citizens caught fighting for Israel in Gaza. There are reports some have already joined the IDF, but Pretoria warns they could be breaking international law and face charges back home. They also need permission from their government to fight in overseas conflicts, but Pretoria is firmly against Israel’s assault on Gaza and describes it as genocide. It’s also called on the International Criminal Court to investigate Tel Aviv over war crimes.

HAMAS TO FRANCE: RETURN ALGERIAN SKULLS!

French President Macron shouldn't preach human rights as long as it keeps the skulls of Algerian martyrs in French museums. That's the view of Hamas representative, Osama Hamdan. His show of support for Algeria is not surprising as the north African country declared 'full solidarity' with Palestine following October 7th's escalation. And his dislike of France is not unexpected either, given Macron has strongly criticised Hamas and called for an international coalition to fight them. But all that aside, Hamdan raises an important point. The Musée de l’Homme in Paris continues to keep the heads of 37 Algerians decapitated during the bloody French conquest in the 19th century. Before being sent back to France as trophies, they were shown to Algerians to scare them and quell any rebellion.

Continued….Three years ago France saw fit to repatriate 24 of them, but failed to return the rest. Surely it's time all are given back. They are national heroes and deserve a dignified resting place.

OUR DIVISION EMPOWERS THE ENEMY

As colonised, people grapple with the never-ending battle with white supremacist ideology; we also must deal with divisions between our respective ethnicities. In this informative video clip, investigative reporter Nikole Hannah-Jones provides a brief history lesson on 'National Day of Racial Healing,' held earlier this year in New Orleans, USA.

TIME TO END APARTHEID IN ISRAEL

South African Member of Parliament Mbuyiseni Ndlozi says Israel needs to transform itself so its diverse nationals can coexist peacefully. He argues the current apartheid state of Israel has no place in the modern world. He reminds us of the high price the Black majority population paid to end white minority rule in South Africa, adding Palestinians are engaged in a similar struggle.

PLO: TO SOLVE MIGRATION CRISIS, MAKE AFRICA A FACTORY

Africa loses millions of its best minds and strongest talents every year. All this, just for emigrated Africans to be treated as second-class citizens in Europe and around the world. Pan-Africanist PLO Lumumba recently spoke to African Stream and he has a proposal to fix this: Turn Africa into a factory.

For centuries, the continent has been relegated to the position of primary producer. With its wealth of gold, iron, timber, uranium, cobalt and countless other resources, the continent has been a battleground for Western interests, resulting in its colonisation and current neocolonisation. However, employing the labour and intellect of Africa’s youth should see the continent move higher on the supply chain across multiple sectors and, in effect, halt the migration crisis, which is largely driven by economic considerations.
👍9
Continued….Lumumba further states no one would reasonably want to be uprooted from a continent as wealthy as this. But, to retain her youth, Africa should provide an avenue to tap into one of her greatest resources. Lumumba warns the journey won’t be straightforward, as regions like Europe that have benefited from Africa’s status quo won’t be too happy with a shift.

Have a watch and let us know what you think.

Léopold Sédar Senghor was Senegal’s first president, and a prominent poet. After more than 20 years in power, he quit to dedicate himself entirely to his passion for writing poetry. He’s one of the most-read African authors. He also wrote works of literary theory, promoting the concept of Négritude, or Blackness. He aimed to cultivate and affirm a distinctively Black consciousness among Africans and the African diaspora. He died at the age of 95 on December 20, 2001.

DRC ELECTIONS: WHAT’S AT STAKE?

Voting is underway in DRC’s general election - and the political temperature’s high amid calls to fix the country’s security crisis.

About 45-million Congolese are registered. Those taking part will pick the country’s next president, parliamentary representatives and local government, with the ruling party of incumbent Félix Tshisekedi’s Union for Democracy and Social Progress expected to win most seats.

The Congolese military and police have been deployed to guarantee security across the vast central African country, which has been struggling to quell an armed rebellion by the M23 insurgency, which Kinshasa says is backed by neighbouring Rwanda.

In the last general elections, disputes over who won the presidency led to violent street protests.
👍2
Both Tshisekedi and his closest challenger, second-placed Martin Fayulu, claimed victory - but Tshisekedi’s win was confirmed by the nation’s constitutional court, enabling the country’s first democratic transfer of power in 59 years of independence from Belgium.

The top issues in focus in this election are ending persistent insecurity, solving a deep-seated humanitarian crisis, boosting the economy and cleaning up the country’s volatile mining sector.

African Stream’s Erick Gavala filed this report from DRC’s violence-rocked eastern city of Goma ahead of the vote and got reactions from the locals.

AGONISING MESSAGE OVER SUDAN CARNAGE GOES VIRAL

A Sudanese man’s outrage at his country’s military leaders has gone viral. And when you listen to this post, you’ll see why. He lambasts Shams al-Din al-Kabashi, the army’s Deputy Commander-in-Chief, for offering condolences to Kuwait after the death of its Emir while ignoring the plight of his own people.

The eighth-month war between Sudan’s Army and Rapid Support Forces military group has killed 12,000 and displaced nearly seven million. It’s decapitated the nation’s health system, marked by the bombing and looting of hospitals as well as the killing of medics. And there are fears of Libya-style Balkanisation as the fighting continues with no end in sight.
👍1
Continued….The UN estimates 300,000 people have fled Jezira State in the last three days alone. A man-made famine is also creeping across the country as Sudan’s former bread baskets are pillaged. Alleged ethnically motivated killings have reared the ugly ghost of Janjaweed’s massacre of Darfur in the 2000s, as militias have been employed against communities such as the Masalit for months now. Foreign interference has also been blamed for extending the war, with countries like the UAE and Egypt backing different factions.

And if all that wasn’t bad enough, RSF militia has now seized Wad Madani, the country’s second city, which had taken in hundreds of thousands of refugees from the capital, Khartoum, early in the eight-month war between the regular army and the paramilitary RSF.

The pain in this man’s voice is tangible. And yet it seems few are listening as the world’s forgotten war continues.

BLACK VS WHITE: U.S. COP RACISM ON DISPLAY AGAIN

Video has emerged showing once again how totally different the policing of Africans in America is from that of their White counterparts. It shows a Black man and a White man squaring up for a fight outside a San Diego bar - before cops on bikes intervene. But the officers’ attention is entirely directed towards the Black man, whom they quickly surround and order to the ground with guns drawn, and then wrestle and handcuff. The White guy is completely ignored.

It’s unclear when the incident took place, but stats make clear that it could have been any other day in America. Three times as many Africans in America as Whites are killed by the police. To put that into perspective, there were 1,097 fatal police shootings in the US in 2022.

Over three years have passed since the killing of George Floyd but the pain and violence Black people experience at the hands of police officers hasn’t relented. Why not?

LIBERIA REVERSES UN VOTE AGAINST GAZA CEASEFIRE

In a dramatic about turn, Liberia has reversed its United Nations vote against a humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Apparently, the country’s UN envoys acted against the wishes of outgoing President George Weah, who’s now stepped in to change his country’s stance on the conflict.

Liberia was the only African country voting against last week’s resolution, but its foreign ministry insists President Weah ‘has always stood on the side of peace’. It added he’d made ‘a passionate appeal for the exercise of restraint and consideration for civilians who are the real victims of the ongoing crisis’ in a letter sent to Israel Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, last month.

Gaza has endured a relentless massacre since the escalation of hostilities on October 7th, with only a week-long reprieve since then.
👍4
Continued….The city of two-million has seen Israel drop over 29,000 bombs. Nearly 20,000 civilians have been killed, most of them women and children.

Meanwhile, Israel maintains a blockade intent on starving Palestinians. The World Food Program reports 100% of Gaza residents are food insecure, up from 33% before October 7th.

Most of the world has condemned the horrors inflicted. However, the US has consistently vetoed UN Security Council calls for a ceasefire and continues to send arms to Israel.
