NEPOTISM! SOMALIA’S SLOWEST ATHLETE
As we look at some of the funniest videos of 2023, we revisit this viral video in August 2023 that had everyone in stitches.
An out-of-shape Somali athlete, Nasra Ali Abukar, clocked the slowest-ever time for the 100m in an international competition. She slumped over the line in 21.81 seconds during the World University Games in China.
But many showed little sympathy for the 20-year-old amid claims of rampant nepotism then. She was actually the niece of the vice-president of the Somali Athletics Federation and was selected ahead of another actual athlete who’d trained for five years.
The Somali Athletics Federation is still hiding under a rock for this national embarrassment.

Just like every other year, 2022 proved Africa is a treasure trove of natural resources that shape the world. From the shimmering allure of diamonds to the timeless appeal of gold, and the energy that drives the globe—oil—this continent’s contribution to global progress has been monumental. Aside from the above, you may not know platinum, cobalt and manganese also are found in abundance throughout the continent. Plus, Africa contains 65 per cent of the world’s arable land.
Unfortunately, many African countries are still tied to their former colonisers decades after gaining independence, and therefore, cannot enjoy the fruits beneath their feet.
As we begin to better understand how important Africa is to the rest of the world, we should also learn how powerful it can become once Africans liberate and unite it under one continent-wide socialist system.

Our favourite cartoon of the year depicts one of the biggest stories of 2023 - Niger’s overthrow of French neocolonialism. And how regional bloc ECOWAS exposed itself as an obedient lapdog for France.
Seeing how the brave trio of Mali, Guinea and Burkina Faso went about cutting ties with France, Niger took the cue and deposed western puppet Mohamed Bazoum on July 26th.
Moving in lockstep with the West, ECOWAS imposed sanctions on poverty-hit Niger after the military seizure of power. These included freezing national assets, ending ‘aid’ to the country and halting financial transactions, as well as closing borders with Niger and banning commercial flights. Nigeria cut off electricity supply, which amounts to 70% of the power that Niger gets from its southern neighbour.
Aided by people power, Niger held off threats of invasion and eventually succeeded in expelling the French ambassador and agreeing a timeline for the withdrawal of all French troops.

Continued….Interestingly, after cutting ties with France, Niger’s real GDP is projected to grow by an impressive 11.1% in 2024, according to an IMF report.
Will ECOWAS see where the wind is blowing and change tack? We hope to see an end to Africans fighting their own brothers for the sake of external neo-/colonial powers.

AFROCENTRIC SCHOOLS RULE!
Most African countries adopted a Eurocentric form of education at Independence. But there is a school in Kenya disrupting the colonial form of education. Children in Freedom School, the first of its kind, offers an Afrocentric system of learning. It focuses on incorporating African culture and teaching its students about their roots and history. It even teaches and examines students in their mother tongue, something that’s banned in some western-styled classrooms.
We paid a visit, and definitely give them top marks!

2023 RECAP: OUR REACTION TO CNN ‘EXPERT’S’ TAKE ON NIGER
African Stream has reacted to videos of Donald Trump, King Charles, Elon Musk, among others, but the one that took the cake was our reaction to CNN’s expert on the coup in Niger.
Shortly after July 26 it was evident that the overthrow of Western-aligned president Mohamed Bazoum by the military had popular support. For Nigeriens, here at last was a chance to kick out the exploitative French - and their influence - from their motherland.
CNN brought on Washington DC think-tanker and former State Department employee Aneliese Bernard to explain France’s (and the West’s) dwindling fortunes in Niger.
Trying to make sense of it all, she said that the capital Niamey was populated by the elite, whose differences with the president may have contributed to his downfall.

Continued….No mention of how France has greatly benefited at the expense of Niger, which is one of the poorest countries in the world with a per capita income of $ 628 (IMF).
CNN’s host Zain Asher then echoed the West’s fear of an awakened continent when she wondered why Nigeriens were happy to be rid of a ‘democratically elected’ leader who is ‘trusted by the West’.
It’s a dangerous time for humanity when mainstream media believes its own propaganda, especially about Africa. It’s even more dangerous when people believe what these ‘experts’ say about the continent.

During the height of the Cold War, Soviet support for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea—better known as North Korea—included funding, intelligence, arms, training, humanitarian aid and more. North Korea used this as a means to support the struggles of countries that were aligned with its ideology, Marxism-Leninism. However, North Korea’s own interpretation of this ideology is referred to as ‘Juche,’ which emphasises self-reliance. That is what the government of North Korea saw reflected in the anti-colonial liberation struggles across the African continent.
