NIGERIAN STEALING FROM THE PEOPLE

An investigative report has revealed how Oluwaseye Tinubu - the son of Nigeria's president-elect - used a shell company domiciled in the British Virgin Islands to acquire a multimillion-dollar London property. Moreover, he bought it from an international fugitive accused of defrauding the Nigerian Petroleum Resources Ministry.

IGBOS ABANDONED IN SUDAN?

Tribal discrimination is the last thing you need when fleeing a war zone. Nigeria organised evacuation buses for its citizens trapped in Sudan - but not everyone’s being allowed on. A viral video shows university students from Nigeria’s Igbo community alleging they were left behind, to make room on the buses for non-Igbo Nigerians. In it, they appeal for help directly to the Igbo owner of an airline that’s put on flights from Egypt to Nigeria for citizens evacuated from Sudan.

COMOROS MAYORS JOIN ANTI-FRANCE PROTESTS

There’s growing resistance to France’s radical plan expelling migrants from a contested African island. Mayors on the Comoros archipelago have joined protests against the deportation of so-called undocumented foreigners from Mayotte. It’s governed by France despite being almost 8000 KM away and is claimed by neighbouring Comoros which demands the scheme is abandoned. After all, shouldn't all African people from this chain of islands be treated as one?

SUDAN VS UKRAINE

The Sudan conflict once again highlights a racial approach to humanitarian efforts. Compared to how Ukrainian refugees were treated at the onset of their conflict, there's a cold indifference to Sudan. Europe offers jobs and cash to those from Ukraine and gave $100-billion in aid to Kiev in just a year. In stark contrast, no similar schemes have been offered to the Sudanese. Meanwhile, cases are rife of stranded Africans unable to access their passports locked in Western embassies in Sudan.

CASSINGA MASSACRE

Was it a massacre of civilians or a legitimate military target? Over 600 people died when Apartheid South Africa bombed Angola’s Cassinga and sent in paratroopers. It claimed to be taking out rebels fighting in neighbouring Namibia’s war of independence. But evidence suggests the victims were mostly refugees - women and children fleeing the fighting. Here’s a reminder of what’s known.

STOP EXPLOITING AFRICA

Africa is portrayed as a poor continent, but actually it’s one of the richest. Here’s European Parliament member, Clare Daly, explaining how unfair trade relations with the West prevent Africa from benefitting from its own natural wealth.

DID INDIANS DO INDEPENDENCE BETTER?

Did Indians deal with their colonial past better than Africans? Thau-Thau Haramanuba, the leader of South Africa’s Rastafari United Front, seems to think so. He claims we’re still stuck trying to conform to British ideals and culture, whereas the Indians just kept what served them - the technology. Is he right? Do we, for example, obsess too much about ‘perfect’ spoken English as a marker of intelligence?
