POLICE STATE: UK ARRESTS ANTI-MONARCHISTS

Over 50 peaceful demonstrators were arrested by British police in London during the British monarch's coronation ceremony. Police slapped them with public-order offences, breaches of the peace and conspiracy to cause a public nuisance. Many just for chanting: "Not my King" within earshot of the royal event. It's precisely what African Stream's Ahmed Kaballo had warned would happen weeks before the expensive spectacle.

What a wasted opportunity. King Charles III was urged to make amends during his coronation by acknowledging his family’s and country’s crimes against Africans. But that proved beneath him. New monarch, same old monarchy.

SHOULD AFRICANS CELEBRATE?

Hundreds of Africans accepted invitations to watch King Charles’ coronation at British embassies across the continent. Were they right to celebrate a hierarchal, colonial monarchy which still rules over 14 overseas countries to this day? Are they right to celebrate crown jewels being placed on Charles's head that are engraved with diamonds stolen from the continent? Are they right to celebrate a family that acquired much of their vast wealth from the enslavement and human trafficking of almost 200,000 Africans to the Americas, with around 40,000 dying en route, something the monarchy still hasn’t apologised for?

You tell us in the comments.

SUDAN ON THE BRINK

The humanitarian crisis in war-torn Sudan has reached breaking point. African Stream's CEO and founder, Ahmed Kaballo, describes how civilian deaths are soaring while medical and food supplies are dwindling. Thousands of foreign nationals have been evacuated, but millions of Sudanese remain trapped and face a desperate situation.

Europe’s right-wingers don’t want to help Sudanese refugees find safety. They argue that it’s Africa’s business, and the responsibility of Sudan’s 7 neighbours to help out. Well, that’s exactly what those African counties have been doing - providing shelter and assistance to over 100,000 fleeing the conflict, despite (some of them) being in the grip of their own humanitarian and security crises.

SOUTH AFRICA WANTS ITS DIAMONDS BACK

The plundering of Africa was rubbed in our faces during the recent coronation of Charles III. That crown, that sceptre - all studded with jewels taken without consent from the continent… including one of the most impressive diamonds ever found. South Africans say it’s time to hand the stones back.

EAST DRC: MORE TROOPS COMING…

SADC - a bloc of southern African states - has decided to send troops to eastern DRC. The region is being contested by rebel groups that have terrorised the civilian population, with many fleeing. East African nations under the EAC umbrella have already deployed forces there. These have clawed back some of the areas captured by the insurgents. It’s hoped there will be strategic coordination between the SADC and EAC operations, with the additional boots on the ground proving decisive.

Many welcome the move as a sign of African solidarity and cooperation. Others see it as a case of external meddling. Let us know your views in the comments.
