Ethiopia: Fury At Mosque Destruction

Trouble’s brewing in Ethiopia, where the authorities are pushing ahead with plans to pull down mosques to make way for a new modern city. The official line is that only ‘illegal buildings’ are being targeted. But livid Muslim communities don’t see it like that. Large protests have been met with a heavy hand - with reports of 3 deaths after police clashes and over a hundred arrests. Could the Muslim anger explode like it did ten years ago, when it led to a change of government? One to watch.

Neo-colonialism

Getting rid of the colonialists was only the first fight. Now we have to get rid of the neo-colonialists. And as Pan-African activist Affiong L. Affiong explains, these days, White power often wears a Black mask. Some of our own leaders are only too happy to play puppet for the ex-colonists’ strings. She urges vigilance and action, and channels Pan-African icon Marcus Garvey’s message of empowerment in this powerful speech.

Ukraine Helped Burkina Ignored

Another Islamic Insurgency is sweeping Burkina Faso.
But it's a crisis that's been largely forgotten, when compared with Ukraine. While Kiev grabs headlines and billions of dollars in aid, little is done to help the landlocked, West African country. Burkinabes gave us their views on the lack of international support.

Pan-African Win In Guinea-Bissau

A coalition led by a Pan-Africanist party has won parliamentary elections in Guinea-Bissau. The PAIGC hasn’t exactly got the catchiest of acronyms, but their ideas are certainly catching on (again!) in the West African nation. Here’s a look at their independence-struggle origins, and at their track-record at implementing their socialist ideals.

We also look at why voters are turning their back on Guinea-Bissau’s President Embaló, whose ever closer links to France have irked many.

EU Diplomat Recalled For Monkey Slur

If an ambassador is supposed to show his or her country’s best side, then what does that say about Romania? Bucharest’s man in Kenya stunned African envoys at a UN meeting in Nairobi when he compared them to a monkey that had appeared in a window. He’s been sent packing for his ‘quip,’ and the EU member state has apologised profusely. It’s a stark reminder of how ingrained even the crudest forms of racism are at the highest level in the West, from Reagan and Nixon calling Africans monkeys to Donald Trump’s ‘s***hole countries’ remark.

'Hats Off' To Colonialists For Pausing WWI?

On this day, 37 years ago, Guyanese scholar, Pan-Africanist and revolutionary Walter Rodney was assassinated. Rodney is most famous for his book ‘How Europe Underdeveloped Africa.’ Published in 1972, it would go on to influence generations of revolutionary Pan-Africanists, and five decades after it first left the printing press, it remains an essential pillar of the Pan-African school of thought.

One of the critical areas examined in the book is how European imperialism into Africa was underpinned by a racist ideology. It showed how - despite their many differences - Europeans always circled their wagons when it came to the oppression and exploitation of Africa and its people. A clear example of this was in 1915, when enemies Germany and Britain joined forces midway through WW1 to quash what was perceived as a greater threat - the African uprisings led by John Chilembwe in modern-day Malawi.
