Africa
Must LEAD
On Climate
One thing that’s often missing in discussions of climate change and Africa is - Africans! Our continent has been marginalised in global green-policy decision-making.
We accounts for a fifth of the global population and create only as fraction of global emissions, yet it’s our people who pay the highest price during climate disasters.
So why are countries that industrialised and got rich through dirty energy charged with setting the climate agenda? Their hundred-billion-dollar promises on climate financing for Africa are yet to materialise. Not only that, they are okay with using fossil fuels while placing multiple obstacles in our path.

Continued - Africa Must Lead On Climate
Across the continent, communities that had nothing to do with carbon emissions have had to give up their land so Western corporations can use it for ‘carbon trading’ in the name of conservation. This also completely ignores the tradition of indigenous communities acting as guardians of biodiversity in their ancestral lands.
Watch Kenya’s William Ruto make the point well: Africa needs to take charge of its climate future. And it deserves a voice when it comes to the global effort to save the planet. No one will save Africa unless Africa saves itself!

COMING $OON
Ethiopia, Kenya, Zambia and Ghana are the latest African countries to turn to the IMF in a time of economic crisis. But can their populations afford the higher prices and cuts to public spending that's likely to follow?
What's more, can their governments afford to pay back dollar loans when their own currencies depreciate?
Welcome to the debt trap!

REFUGEE’S FURY
OVER DRC CRISIS
A Congolese refugee gives an impassioned account of her desperate life after being forced to flee to South Africa. She and others had camped outside the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) in Pretoria. When they were recently evicted, this mother-of-four tore into a local reporter. Laying bare her feelings, she blasts the international community for allowing never-ending conflict in DRC. The UN's peacekeeping mission MONUSCO, she says, has achieved nothing and the UNHCR does little to help Congolese. She also accuses Rwanda of destabilising her country by backing rebels, something Kigali denies.
But there’s one thing that’s indisputable. In her mind, it’s all down to the greed and desire for DRC’s vast mineral wealth. She challenges anyone to disagree with her. Listen to her heartfelt interview and tell us what you think.

INDOMITABLE AFRICAN MOORS
While Africa’s recent history bears the hallmarks of European colonialism, there was a time when Africans ran parts of Europe.
The Moors took over what is now Spain and Portugal and left a legacy still seen today. However, both processes were very different. European colonialism is best understood as a process of resource depletion, labour exploitation, unfair taxation, religious indoctrination, pitting ethnic communities against each other and breaking up traditional African society and values. The Moors did things somewhat differently; Brenda Mwai gives us the breakdown.
