Continued……There are allegations he forged education documents in his bid to be president. There are also US court documents from the 1990s revealing he was accused of laundering millions for heroin dealers in Chicago. Even though there was no conviction, some speculate US authorities had ‘got enough on him’ to make him their asset. According to State Department cables released by WikiLeaks, officials relied heavily on Tinubu’s assessments to understand what was happening politically in Nigeria.

It’s a fascinating backstory to a president most Nigerians just want to get rid of. This is our interview with the journalists behind the explosive Grayzone report.

U.S. TO LIFT SANCTIONS ON ISRAELI MINING BILLIONAIRE

This week’s episode of ‘Africa In 90 Seconds’ looks at the Financial Times reporting that the United States plans to lift sanctions on Israeli billionaire mining magnate Dan Gertler despite his corrupt dealings in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) that have cost the African country more than $2 billion.

Gertler has been under US sanctions since 2017 for using $100 million in bribes to gain access to three DRC mines. This allegedly took place with the help of former Congolese President Joseph Kabila. Gertler continues to profit from Congo’s mineral wealth through royalties, and now, it looks like the US is giving him a Monopoly-style ‘get out of jail’ card. Except, this isn’t a board game. It’s real life. Some say the move would boost US access to the DRC’s mineral wealth and counter China’s influence in the DRC, the heart of Africa.

And, so much for the United States’ sanctions programme. The hypocrisy is glaring.

PIERS BLASTS RABBI DEFENDING MEDIA BAN IN GAZA

Courageous war correspondents risk their lives to inform us about conflicts around the world. As the saying goes, truth is the first casualty of war, so aren’t we grateful for journalists who’ve given everything to report on Israel’s military onslaught on the Gaza Strip?

As of 10 July, the Committee to Protect Journalists says the military onslaught has k*lled 108 media workers, the highest death toll of journalists in any modern conflict that CPJ has monitored. Israel has detained another 51 journalists, and four are missing.

Continued….. British TV presenter Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan on X and IG) alluded to this unique service rendered by brave journalists in his question to Israeli Orthodox Jewish Rabbi @yishaifleisher (X and IG) because Israel has banned certain journalists from covering the onslaught in the Gaza Strip. That Israel controls who goes into the enclave indicates who controls Palestinian territories.

But, watch the rabbi attempt to divert the conversation by waving the Holocaust denial card, which isn’t the topic under discussion.

ONE AFRICA, ONE PASSPORT, ONE DESTINY

A borderless Africa is a vision rooted in the Pan-African concept of unity and shared prosperity, transcending the artificial divisions imposed by colonial powers. The idea is not merely an idealistic dream but a practical framework for economic, social, and political empowerment. Imagine an Africa where goods, services, and people move freely across the continent, igniting economic growth and cultural exchange in unprecedented ways.

The Berlin Conference of 1884-85, a dark chapter in African history, was a pivotal event in which European powers carved up the continent without regard for existing ethnic, cultural, or linguistic boundaries. This arbitrary division sowed the seeds of discord and conflict and hindered cohesive development. Rectifying this historical injustice requires a bold reimagining of Africa’s geopolitical landscape.

Continued……Prominent Pan-African theorists like Kwame Nkrumah, Julius Nyerere, and Marcus Garvey had long advocated for a united Africa, emphasising the strength that comes from solidarity. The creation of one passport, one citizenship, one military command, and one central bank would not only symbolise this unity but also streamline governance and defence mechanisms, reduce bureaucratic inefficiencies, and amplify Africa’s voice on the world stage. Such integration would harness the continent’s immense resources and human capital, driving sustainable development and securing a brighter future for all Africans. The call for a borderless Africa honours the continent’s rich heritage while forging a path towards collective progress and enduring peace.

In this clip, Hardi Yakubu (@son_ofafrica on TikTok and @ym.hardi on IG), Movement Coordinator for @africansrising (X), advocates for the ultimate dream: One Africa, one people, one destiny.

KENYA’S PROTESTS: A CRISIS OF DIGNITY

The deadly protests that swept Kenya could’ve been avoided, if the government had ensured its people could live with dignity. That’s the message from Booker Ngesa Omole., the vice-chair of the country’s Communist Party.

He gave this interview to network K24, and admits Kenya’s cost-of-living crisis was in part triggered by a global economic downturn. However, Mr Omole warns if you let the people go hungry, they’ll have no choice but to break the law.

At least 39 people died as a result of the police crackdown on demonstrations over proposed tax hikes.

The clip is short and sweet, and we think on point. Give us your view.

In a dramatic move, Kenyan President William Ruto has today, 11 July, yielded to one of the critical demands of mainly youthful protesters by dismissing all cabinet secretaries and the attorney general, leaving behind the deputy president and the prime cabinet secretary.

Generation Z, Kenya’s now politically awakened generation who entered adulthood in recent years to find few jobs and a high cost of living, cemented its place in national politics after three weeks of nationwide demonstrations against tax hikes Ruto said would shore up revenues to pay off $80 billion in domestic and international debt.

Despite the government removing some of the most controversial International Monetary Fund-backed tax hikes, Kenyans demanded Ruto scrap the proposed 2024 finance bill and called on him to resign.

Let us know what you think of this bold move.

ISRAEL THE SELF-PROCLAIMED VICTIMS

In this frank interview, a former Israeli education minister explains how her country justifies its k*lling of Palestinians. Europeans that criticise its actions are reminded of the Holocaust, while Americans that push-back are called anti-Semitic. Throw into the mix Israel’s strong ties with the American Israeli establishment and media, and the narrative is controlled.

Shulamit Aloni was speaking with American TV show Democracy Now.
Her words haven’t lost any relevance; given Israel’s nine-month bombardment of Gaza continues, with over 38,000 Palestinians k*lled.

THE DIASPORA DEFENDS SAHEL REVOLUTIONS

In June, members of the African diaspora based in the United States and Canada, primarily from the Coalition for the Elimination of Imperialism in Africa (@abasimperialism), embarked on a 17-day delegation to the Alliance of Sahel States, a mutual defence pact between Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger that has expanded to become a confederation. These countries underwent military coups in recent years that ousted Western-aligned leaders. So far, they’ve all booted coloniser France’s military and press. Now, they seek to unite their foreign policies and economies to decolonise their territories.

Continued……The delegates, Obioma Ohia (@okalammuo), Prudence Iticka (@_dearprudence_) and Eliamani Ismail (@eliamanismail), first landed in Burkina Faso, where they met up with their host organisation, @burkinabooks. Together, they set off to Bamako, Mali, and Niamey, Niger, where they met with many organisations before returning to Burkina Faso.

But why take such an extensive international journey across three countries previously riddled with terrorism in the aftermath of the NATO invasion of Libya and poverty in the shadow of French colonialism?

In this video, these three Africans break it down.

RWANDA SAYS UK WILL NOT GET BACK ASYLUM DEAL MONEY

Rwanda says it won’t return a penny to the UK which has just scrapped a deportation deal between the countries. Kigali had received around £240-million under the agreement, signed by the previous UK government in 2022. However, newly-elected British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, has binned the deal to send asylum seekers from Britain to Rwanda.
In a video posted by a Rwandan state-owned media outlet, a government spokesperson said there was no provision for a refund in the contract.

No doubt it’s a relief to those who stood to be affected by the arrangement, which the UK Supreme Court said violated international law.
Rwanda has a poor human rights record, the exact thing that made most of the asylum seekers flee their home countries. In January, a policy statement by then-Home Secretary, James Cleverly, admitted Rwanda has 'issues' with its 'human rights record around political opposition to the current regime, dissent and free speech.'

DEBUNKING TRUMP'S 'BLACK JOBS' TROPE

Donald Trump sparked outrage when he said millions of migrants were taking ‘Black and Hispanic jobs’. His inflammatory remarks during the first presidential debate of the year, were slammed for being devisive and exploiting racial stereotypes.

To prove just how wrong he was, here’s a clip from filmmaker Loki Mulholland. The son of civil rights icon, Joan Trumpauer Mulholland, did a quick survey of Black people asking what they do for a living. The results were wide and varied and we’ve put together a few of them.

POLITICIANS FEAR PROTESTS ACROSS AFRICA

Kenya’s deadly youth-led protests against IMF-backed tax hikes have sent shockwaves across the continent.
Here, a Ghanaian politician says his country must not make the same mistake and should pass good laws ‘to avoid being beaten by the public.’

Ghana’s former President John Mahama, has also warned the scenes in Kenya could be repeated elsewhere. While visiting a constituency on July 5th, he told reporters: ‘If you have a youthful population and you’re not creating opportunities for them, then it can become a time bomb.’

According to website Statista, around 40 per cent of Africa’s population is aged under 16, making it the world’s youngest continent.

Continued….. At least 39 people died in the weeks-long Kenyan demonstrations, which forced President Ruto to axe his Finance Bill. For many, the proposed tax increases were a step too far during a cost-of-living crisis.

Politicians beyond Kenya now view what happened as a warning for the whole continent. Do you agree?

U.S. TRIES OH, SO HARD TO DEFEND ISRAEL

A journalist questioned why the US is quick to conclude Russia attacked a Ukrainian children’s hospital on 8 July while it tends not to blame Israel when Gaza Strip hospitals are blown to pieces.

For Africans, this difference in treatment is critical as media coverage of Western military interventions in Africa barely get the same amount of news coverage.

US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller dismissed that anyone other than Russia could have attacked a Ukrainian children’s hospital.
🤬6👍2🤔2😈2
Continued….. He went on to downplay Israel’s attacks on primarily women and children. The military onslaught has destroyed much of the Gaza Strip’s civilian infrastructure, including about 66 per cent of hospitals. Yet, Miller blamed H*mas for allegedly using Palestinians as a shield, a claim that has been thrown around since the most recent escalation in the 76-year Israeli occupation began. But the claim has yet to be supported by evidence.

US hypocrisy runs deep as Israel is the United States’ largest recipient of foreign aid since World War II. US arms manufacturers generate billions selling weapons to Israel. Meanwhile, the US has vetoed proposed permanent ceasefire resolutions at the UN Security Council.

Over four years after the Black Lives Movement erupted in America, following the murder of George Floyd, police brutality continues to be a major issue.

According to the non-profit Mapping Police Violence, 27 per cent of people killed by US police in 2021 were Black, despite making up only 13 per cent of the county’s population. All this is happening despite efforts by police to diversify, with 60 per cent of the NYPD, for example, identifying as an ethnic minority.

Continued….. One reason, says professor James Smalls, is cowardice. In this interview, he recalls what he once saw first-hand in 148th Street and Amsterdam Avenue in Harlem in New York City in the US. A Black officer had put his foot on the head of a handcuffed Black homeless woman, in view of his White sergeant. When Mr Smalls complained, he was told the homeless woman was ’unruly'. The professor says it was a statement of her ‘nothingness.’

Scope for such discrimination has just got a whole lot worse. US Supreme Court justices recently ruled it’s okay to arrest those living outside, even if they have no other place to go. It’s hard to disagree with the professor in this interview with @Ineverknewtv.com. Criminalising and dehumanising the vulnerable is not the answer, it’s spineless.
