MOZAMBIQUE’S
INDEPENDENCE
STRUGGLE

Today Mozambique celebrates its independence from Portugal.
On June 25th, 1975, nearly four centuries of colonial rule came to an end.
But its freedom only arrived after a bitter armed struggle.
It was spearheaded by Eduardo Mondlane who led the Marxist Frente de Libertação de Moçambique or FRELIMO.
He was assassinated in 1969 and replaced by charismatic guerrilla commander, Samora Machel, who became the country’s first post-colonial president.
However, his time in power was far from easy.
He fought rebels from Resistência Nacional Moçambicana (RENAMO) who were backed by Malawi and racist regimes in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) and South Africa.

RUTO ROUTS
MACRON AND IMF

Kenya’s President Ruto didn’t hold back at a recent global summit on debt relief and climate change.
He told heads of the IMF and French President Emmanuel Macron, he wants a level playing field.
The old financial system, where the World Bank and IMF have the final word, needs to be overhauled and African voices need to be heard.
Ruto’s long been campaigning for equity on the global stage.
Watch him get in the faces of those who currently hold the levers of power.
The question is, are they listening?

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY MADAGASCAR 🇲🇬

On 26th June 1960, the island nation Madagascar broke the chains of French colonialism, joining the list of other newly independent African countries.
The French first landed in Madagascar in 1883 in an attempt to colonize it; their efforts were, however, met with fierce resistance by the Malagasy people and triggered what became known as the Franco-Hova War.
The war would drag on until 1896, when the French colonial army finally prevailed over the Malagasy people, and the island was officially brought under the control of Paris.
Discontent with French rule, however, continued to simmer and several rebellions against colonial authorities occurred in the subsequent decades.
The British assumed temporal control of the island after France fell to the NAZIS in 1940; it was later handed back to the French after the end of the second world war.

Continued - HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY MADAGASCAR 🇲🇬

The post-second world war era saw the rise of many anti-colonial movements in Madagascar, with the Party of the Disinherited of Madagascar (Padesm) and the Mouvement Démocratique de la Rénovation Malgache (MDRM) being the most prominent.
In March 1947, over 2000 people attacked the French military base Moramanga on the east of the island.
Twenty-two colonial soldiers were killed and it triggered what became known as the Malagasy revolt.
The French reaction to the uprising was swift and brutal; over a few months, tens of thousands would die at the hands of the colonial forces. By 1948, the revolt had been savagely brought under control.
However, the flame of the Independence movement continued to burn until 1960, when the country finally gained independence with Philibert Tsiranana becoming its first president.

'WE ARE NOT BEGGARS'

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has lambasted what he calls the treatment of African leaders as beggars. Speaking to Western leaders, among them French President Emmanuel Macron, Ramaphosa said the African continent does not need charity but to be treated as equal partners on global matters. His remarks come in the wake of comments by some Ukrainian officials who claimed that the recent peace mission by African leaders was motivated by a desire to receive assistance from Moscow.

DJIBOUTI INDEPENDENCE DAY

Djibouti, formerly French Somaliland, gained independence on this day in 1977 after decades of colonial rule.
The region, historically known as the Land of Punt, was strategically important for trade and attracted the attention of foreign powers.
France established a foothold in the late 19th century and maintained control until independence.
The path to freedom saw a series of referendums and political tensions between different ethnic groups. Finally, in 1977, Djibouti voted overwhelmingly to break away from France.

CONTINUED- DJIBOUTI INDEPENDENCE DAY

Hassan Gouled Aptidon, a Somali politician, became the nation's first president and ruled until 1999.
Despite independence, Djibouti has the highest number of foreign military bases in Africa, including American, French, Italian, Japanese and Chinese.
It also has the highest number of French troops outside France, numbering 1,450.
Hopefully, one day they’ll leave, allowing Djibouti to celebrate true independence, free from foreign domination and in full control over its sovereign land.

MENSTRUAL TAXATION

Activists recently stormed Ghana’s parliament demanding schoolgirls and women get better access to sanitary products.
They claim many children can’t afford to buy what they need and that’s leading to high absenteeism in the classroom.
And in rural areas many women are affected too.
One solution put forward is to scrap import taxes and VAT on the goods.
But, so far, their calls for change have fallen on deaf ears.
The Association of Ghana Industries warns dropping tariffs could force local manufacturers out of business.
Meanwhile, the country’s tax authority insists menstrual hygiene products are 'finished goods' and therefore subjected to import levies.
These are pictures from the demonstration on World Menstrual Hygiene Day.
Do you think the rules should change?

WAGNER
WORRIES
AFRICA

After Russia’s mercenary outfit Wagner briefly rebelled, should Moscow’s African partners be worried? We ask the question, because several countries on the continent draw on Russian military support to combat terrorists. And if that should ever disappear, the consequences could be dire. The Kremlin says its African partners are not panicking over what happened. But the incident again demonstrates the long-term need to reduce reliance on foreign help.

AKALA EXPOSING
RACISM IN SCIENCE

Racial science has made a big effort to marginalise the achievements of Africans.
It claims there were two types of Black people, Negroes and Hamites. The latter descended from Europeans and were responsible for most Black accomplishments. This warped thinking perpetuated the notion of White supremacy and deliberately excluded African achievements from historical narratives.
Unfortunately, it still distorts the way people view the continent today.
Listen to rapper, journalist and poet, Akala, explain it plain and simple during this speech at the The Oxford Union in the UK.

One of the world's first universities

If you google the oldest university in the world, what comes up is a university in Italy built in 1158. The truth is, centuries before that, the three oldest universities in the world were established in north Africa. One of those was the University of al-Qarawiyyin founded by a Tunisian-born Muslim woman called Fatima Al Fihri in Fez, Morocco. Here's the explainer by African Stream's Algerian correspondent Roqaiya to free you from google inaccuracies.
