Ghana’s set for a golden age with the launch of its first refinery in the capital, Accra. The Royal Ghana Gold Refinery will process 400kg of the precious metal a day. With prices topping $2,238 an ounce in the second quarter of 2024, the West African state is set for a windfall. Until now, Ghana’s been exporting only unprocessed gold, but still managed to rake in $5 billion in the first half of 2024 alone. The London Bullion Market Association has issued a Good Delivery Bar Certification for the new refinery. Maybe Ghana should revert to its former name, The Gold Coast… or is that too tarnished by the colonial past?

NIGERIA GOV’T BRIBED PROTESTERS?

A video has surfaced of a Nigerian anti-government protester alleging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government paid citizens to disrupt protests that have rocked the country over a cost-of-living crisis.

The unnamed man said people received 5,000 nairas or $3 to disrupt #EndBadGovernance demonstrations in the capital, Abuja.

Continued.....Like their kin in Kenya, who have protested tax hikes for the past two months, Nigerians are crying out in the streets against International Monetary Fund-approved economic policies that have spiked the cost of living.

Oil-rich Nigeria has suffered an economic crisis since Tinubu scrapped a decades-old fuel subsidy and lowered the value of the Nigerian currency, the naira, to attract foreign investment after taking office in May 2023. Inflation has climbed to a 28-year high of 34.19 per cent, as of mid-July, while the naira has depreciated to a record low against the US dollar.

Nigeria is also combating an armed insurgency that, as of 2021, had k*lled some 350,000 people, mostly children below the age of five, according to a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) report.

ALGERIA CELEBRATES OLYMPIC CHAMP KHELIF

Algeria’s Olympic boxing champion, Imane Khelif, sent her country into wild celebrations with her historic win.
But she hasn’t finished fighting yet, launching a legal battle against those who ‘harassed’ her over false claims she was a man.

Khelif defeated China’s Yang Liu to lift the women’s 66kg crown, after suffering days of online hate. It followed her victory in her first fight against an Italian opponent who quit within seconds, claiming she’d never been punched so hard.

Continued.....Media then focussed Khelif’s disqualification from last year’s world championships after failing unspecified ‘gender tests’.
However, Olympic chiefs cleared Imane to fight in Paris, claiming she’s always been a woman. Sadly, that didn’t stop prominent figures like Donald Trump, Elon Musk and author JK Rowling also casting doubt on her gender.

Imane’s lawyers are now taking action over ‘aggravated cyber-harassment’ and have filed a complaint with a special unit at the Paris prosecutor’s office. It will decide whether to open an investigation.

After winning gold on Friday, Imane said it had been her dream for eight years, adding her success gave her a ‘special taste because of those attacks.’

EX-FAR-RIGHT THUG: ‘I REALISED I’M ABSOLUTE SCUM’

In this interview on Good Morning Britain, former senior member of the National Front Matt Collins admits that “we've scapegoated immigrants and asylum seekers and refugees.”

While the British public certainly have legitimate grievances that need to be addressed - such as the state of the National Health Service, housing and the cost of living - Collins asserts that scapegoating immigrants has been a trap many White Brits have fallen into. It’s a tactic commonly employed by the political class to distract from their failings and from finding real solutions. Like many of the violent rioters who were out across England and Northern Ireland recently, he misdirected his anger towards immigrants.

Continued.....His realisation that newcomers to the UK weren’t to blame - and that far-right extremism was not the answer - came during a violent rampage in which Asian women were attacked with hammers and had their heads stamped on. CONGO CAN POWER & FEED AFRICA

Every year on 2 August, people organise events in honour of the lives lost in the ongoing gen*cide in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The day was baptised as Congolese Genocide Memorial Day by @genocost, an initiative led by diaspora-based Congolese who have formed the Congolese Action Youth Platform.

@urgencespanafricaniste hosted the vigil in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

There, African Stream journalist and president of @burkinabooks, Inemesit Richardson, reminded the public of how badly the imperialists want to control the DRC.

According to the European Union Generalised Scheme of Preferences, the DRC is the most resource-rich country on Earth, with 64 per cent of the global supply of coltan, a mineral used to power smartphones, laptops, tablets and electric cars. NGO Friends of the Congo (@congofriends) says Congo has enough arable farmland to feed three times the African population each year and the Congo River has enough hydroelectric capacity to power the entire African continent, plus excess to export worldwide.

ZIMBABWEAN CATTLE FARMER BREAKS BANK WITH $400K BULL PURCHASE

One of the frequent attacks against Zimbabwe’s land reform programme is that it’s ‘doomed to fail’ because Africans can’t farm.

However, many Black farmers across the country are proving that notion wrong. One of them is Collen Tafireyi, who runs a successful cattle breeding business in the country’s eastern region, providing many jobs and contributing to the growth of the country’s cattle industry.

He recently made headlines after paying R8 million rands (US$444,000) for a prized breeding bull called Cyclone at an auction in neighbouring South Africa.

Continued……The price was an African record and set tongues wagging, with many wondering if it was really worth the money. However, Collen insists it’s worth every penny as it will help him become the biggest cattle breeder on the African continent.

He definitely sounds like a man who knows what he is doing, and we love to see Africans breaking records and stereotypes.

Zimbabwe’s land reform programme saw millions of hectares of land transferred from White-settler farmers to Indigenous Zimbabweans in the 1990s. It gave people like Collen the chance to succeed. Let’s just say he took his opportunity by the horns.

TIGRAY REFUGEES ‘WAIT FOR DEATH’

The war between the Tigray People’s Liberation Front and Ethiopia's government officially ended two years ago, but more than a million people remain displaced. In this clip, one Tigray refugee within Ethiopia says he and others like him are simply “waiting for death.” Aid operations are being scaled back, making essentials harder to get.

It is a similar story with Sudanese refugees stuck in Ethiopia. They too face severe shortages of essentials such as food, and are being targeted by local criminal militias. Some have even been trying to be return to Sudan, a war zone. The UN says it has received less than 20% of the funding required to address the needs of refugees from Sudan.

CASTRO AND MALCOLM X IN HARLEM

Cuban leader and friend of Africa Fidel Castro was born on this day, 13th August, in 1926. He was widely admired across Latin America, the Caribbean and our continent. And while he passed away in 2016, he lives on in the hearts and minds of freedom-loving people everywhere.

Throughout his time as a leader, Castro forged a close relationship with numerous pan-African revolutionaries. He developed friendships with Amílcar Cabral, Kwame Nkrumah, Maurice Bishop, Julius Nyerere, Agostinho Neto, Samora Machel, Thomas Sankara, Nelson Mandela, Ahmed Sekou Touré and many others. Under his government, Cuba offered asylum to multiple Black political prisoners from the US, such as Assata Shakur and Nehanda Abiodun. No wonder Kwame Ture called Castro a ‘pan-Africanist of the highest order.’

US-born revolutionary pan-Africanist Malcolm X had an especially close connection to Castro. This is the story of how they met in a hotel in Harlem, New York.

BLACK POWER MOMENT AT OLYMPICS?

France’s football team, led by Thierry Henry, beat Argentina 1-0 in the men’s football quarterfinals on 2 August during the Paris Summer Olympics.

To the commentators on the @5asidepodcast, the win represented a redemption arc and Black power moment because Argentina fans and players were caught singing a racist song about French players after the Copa América (America Cup in English) final match against fellow South American country, Colombia, on 15 July in Miami Gardens, USA.

Argentina fans sang similar racist songs at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

CASTRO: AFRICA’S HERO

Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro would’ve been 98 years old today. He was a key figure in the fight against apartheid, colonialism and exploitation in Africa. During his time he sent Cuban soldiers to fight side by side with Africans to secure their independence and sent civil support as well.His unwavering commitment to the struggle against Western imperialism earned him love and respect across the continent.Happy birthday Fidel Castro, continue to rest in peace.

‘PRAISE GOD ALGERIA SUPPORTED ME’

There’s probably no sweeter place than home right now for Algeria’s first female Olympic boxing champion, Imane Khelif. As you’ll see from these pics, she got a hero’s welcome when she returned to Algiers after her scandal-hit triumph in Paris. Imane faced a barrage of false accusations she was a man, while competing in the women’s 66kg. But she stayed strong to claim her Olympic crown and silence her critics.

Also enjoying the homecoming were fellow Algerian medalists, gymnast Kaylia Nemour and runner Djamel Sedjati. Algeria’s Minister of Youth and Sports Abderrahmane Hammad met them, and they’re due to meet President Abdelmadjid Tebboune later this week.

Continued….. Speaking to the press, Imane said she wanted to show the strength of Algerians and women in particular. She certainly did that. From her first step inside the ring in Paris there was controversy, with her Italian opponent quitting over the power of Imane’s punches. Speculation she was a man then went into overdrive, with media outlets focusing on her disqualification from last year’s world championships. Organisers of that, the International Boxing Federation, said she’d failed ‘eligibility tests’ without giving details.
Olympic chief, Thomas Bach, then came out swinging and defended Imane’s right to compete as a woman.

The whole saga saw the fighter face a torrent of online hate and her lawyers filed a lawsuit with French authorities over the abuse.

Quite a couple of weeks for the boxer who, somehow, kept her focus to become a sporting legend of Algeria.
