SUDANESE REFUGEES IN EGYPT

Egypt is home to some half-million registered refugees and asylum seekers from Sudan, according to the UN.

Egypt does not place its refugees in camps. Instead, they live in cities such as Cairo and Alexandria, where they are given access to education, healthcare and work opportunities.

However, life remains challenging due to economic pressures, and many refugees face high living costs and limited job prospects.

Despite Egypt's long history of solidarity with Sudan, Sudanese refugees are also increasingly experiencing racism and discrimination.

Reports from rights organisation and independent media outlets highlight verbal abuse, housing difficulties and even physical attacks, driven by economic anxieties and deeply rooted societal prejudices.

While Egypt offers legal protections, the lack of strict enforcement has allowed these issues to persist. It's time for stronger action to ensure dignity and equality for all.

AFRICANS ACCUSED OF BEING SOVIET AGENTS

The ‘Red Scare’ in Africa refers to the period during the Cold War when African leaders, freedom fighters and political movements were accused of being agents of the Soviet Union. This paranoia was largely driven by Western imperialist and capitalist nations, especially the US, seeking to maintain control over African resources and prevent the unification of Africa and the spread of Africa’s version of socialism.

With YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Threads and TikTok recently banning African Stream in the wake of a scathing attack by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken - who falsely accused us of being Kremlin propagandists - this week’s Facts of the Week look at revolutionary pan-African leaders who suffered a similar fate: they were branded Soviet agents, despite their objectives being centred on anti-colonialism, self-determination and nationalism. They were subsequently assassinated or overthrown. Your thoughts are welcome.

You don’t have to be an orphan or a calf for this week’s proverb to ring true: at some time, we all have to fend for ourselves against the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune.

KAMALA IS CAPITALISM'S CHOICE

Claudia de la Cruz, running as the Party for Socialism and Liberation’s US presidential candidate, argued at a 30 August campaign event that Kamala Harris, the Democratic Party's nominee in November's election, is capitalism's choice for the top job.

De la Cruz (@Claud9_ on X and @1claud9 on IG) cited Harris’ record as California’s attorney general, during which she is accused of fuelling mass incarceration by subverting a 2011 Supreme Court ruling requiring the state to reduce its prison population. Claudia also brings up the Biden-Harris administration's support for Israel's military onslaught on Gaza, reminding people about the $26 billion the US gave Tel Aviv in April. That's on top of an annual $3.8 billion defence aid package that renews for 10 years from 2019 through 2028, which former US President Barack Obama signed into law in 2016. US support for Israel has featured prominently in the run-up to the election, with the Democrats experiencing a deep rift within party ranks and among ordinary people who once looked at it as the party for workers.

De la Cruz’s pitch to voters is they should not surrender their awakening over Gaza's suffering to the billionaire-funded political parties, whether Democrat or Republican.

US President Joe Biden recently reinstated Egypt’s annual $1.3 billion in military aid after three years of denying it on the grounds of human rights violations.

The US began doling out military aid to Egypt after it signed the 1978 Camp David Accords, establishing diplomatic relations and a détente with Israel. The annual US aid amount places Egypt in third place, following Israel and Ukraine. The package includes advanced weaponry and military training.

Global players have long viewed Egypt as an important state because it controls the Suez Canal, a crucial global trade route; its population is the largest in the region; and its shores border the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, major shipping lanes. It's alignment with the US came after distancing itself from the Soviet Union within years after the death of Nasser, when the new president, Anwar Sadat, started re-orienting the country toward the West. This bolstered the US influence in the region and safeguarded Israel.

Continued……Since 2014, portions of US military aid to Egypt have relied on the northeastern African country making human rights reforms, though the US has granted waivers for security concerns. However, recently, a jury found US Senator Bob Menendez guilty of taking bribes to push to release $300 million in aid frozen over Egypt’s human rights record.

Let us know what you think of Egypt’s role in the region.

On the night of 30 September 1919, some 100 Black people gathered in a local church in Elaine, Arkansas, in the United States, for a meeting called by the Progressive Farmers and Household Union of America. The meeting, whose attendees were predominantly African sharecroppers on White plantations, had been called to address the many grievances they faced - including the exploitative payment they received for their cotton. In fear of a possible attack by White-mobs, several guards were deployed outside the church. The meeting took place amid the so-called 'Red Summer,' an outbreak of White-on-Black terrorism across several parts of the US around mid-1919.

As expected, during the meeting, three White men affiliated with local law-enforcement agencies drove to the church and taunted the guards posted outside the venue. When the guards ignored them, the White men reportedly shot at them, leading to a shootout between the two groups.
