GHANA’S PREZ: ECOWAS NEEDS
SAHEL TRIO BACK

In this clip, Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo responds to a journalist’s question about Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger’s breakaway from - and potential for rejoining - the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Akufo-Addo, who has twice served as ECOWAS chairman, says it would be better for the region if these three important Sahel nations were back in the bloc.

ECOWAS previously attempted to strong-arm the revolutionary trio into compliance through coercive tactics, including illegal and inhumane economic sanctions and threats of military intervention. But this backfired, as the three only strengthened their unity and resolve, forming the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) - ultimately forcing ECOWAS to back off.
🤮13🤡7🖕1
Continued…. As nations with clear anti-imperialist aims, they make no secret of seeking to break free from the neo-colonial stranglehold France has maintained over Francophone Africa for decades. ECOWAS, on the other hand, has proven to be a defunct institution that serves as little more than a mouthpiece and enforcement agency for French interests.

According to Samba Sylla, author of Africa’s Last Colonial Currency: The CFA Franc Story, '[France’s] capture of ECOWAS can be seen in the nature of the financial sanctions imposed on Mali in 2022 and Niger since the 2023 revolutionary putsch. No foreign country could order the central bank of a sovereign currency-issuer to prevent the government accessing its bank accounts and the domestic financial system.'

Given this context, why would the Sahel region regard ECOWAS as an ally of African people seeking liberation rather than a French-neo-colonial puppet?

MOZAMBIQUE OPPOSITION LEADER: 50+ PROTESTERS KILLED

Post-election election violence in Mozambique has reportedly taken more lives amidst calls for regional leaders to help map the way forward.

On 19 November, opposition leader Venancio Mondlane appeared on a Facebook livestream (@venamondlane on FB), claiming authorities had k*lled at least 50 protesters.

The Centre for Democracy and Human Rights (@CDD_Moz on X), a civil society organisation, put the figure at 65, while the outgoing president, Filipe Nyusi, claimed only 19 deaths.

Opposition supporters have been taking to the streets in protest against the outcome of the 9 October elections. The country's electoral body declared Daniel Chapo, the candidate of the ruling Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (FRELIMO), the winner with almost 71 per cent of the vote.

Continued……According to the official results, Mondlane was the distant runner-up. He insisted that the results were fraudulent and has, on several occasions, called for nationwide shutdowns and protests. However, in his recent livestream, he encouraged people to protest near their homes.

Many have accused security forces of being heavy-handed. However, the government has defended them, claiming the action is necessary to restore public order

'MAU MAU, MALCOLM X INSPIRE US TODAY' - EUGENE PURYEAR

The spirit of Mau Mau, Kenya's fearless anti-colonial Land and Freedom Army (1952-60) that spearheaded the country's struggle for independence from British rule, was rekindled at the recently concluded the Communist Party Marxist Kenya (CPM-K)'s (@communistske on X) second national congress in the capital, Nairobi.

Eugene Puryear (@eugenepuryear on X), a delegate representing the US-based Party for Socialism and Liberation (@pslnational on X) fired up the assembly, reminding them of a 1964 speech by revolutionary Malcolm X (1925-65), calling upon Africans in the United States to emulate Kenyan freedom fighters. Malcolm's powerful speech hailing the Mau Mau showed the extent of his transnational outlook in the global struggle against imperialism.
👍155🎉2
Continued……. Puryear also reminded us that 21 February 2025, will mark the 60th anniversary of the assassination of Malcolm X. He noted that on the same date, US military exercises hosted in Kenya with their East African counterparts (code-named ‘Justified Accord’) will be ending, suggesting that revolutionary forces turn the day into one of struggle against US imperialism.

The international nature of the anti-imperialist struggle brings revolutionaries worldwide together for a common cause, as the national congress exemplifies. On 18 February 1957, Dedan Kimathi (1920-57), one of the Mau Mau's most outstanding heroes, paid for Kenya's freedom with his life, hanged by British colonialists. His sacrifice and that of his fellow revolutionaries continue to inspire the working class in many countries today, as Malcolm X testified six decades ago.

Does Malcolm X’s Mau Mau speech also strike a chord with you?

Nurses and other professionals are leaving Africa amid worker shortages in their home countries. This is understandable, given they can earn far more abroad and send remittances home. But what is unforgivable is that African governments are not only failing to turn the tide by creating incentives to stay but, in some cases, actively encouraging workers to grab opportunities outside of Africa. Policies need to be rethought fast as the situation is extremely detrimental to Africans generally. We look at three cases: Ghana, Malawi and Kenya.

U.S. COPS KILL BLACK MAN WHO’D DIALLED 911

Body-cam video has emerged showing a Las Vegas cop shooting dead a Black man - who’d reportedly called police for help after suspecting a break-in. An officer arrived to find Brandon Durham wrestling for a knife with a woman and shot him. After he’d fallen to the floor, the officer shot him another five times. He died on the spot. It’s the eighth fatal police shooting by Las Vegas police this year.

It's a curious case when the United States, a country quick to accuse others—particularly Russia—of election interference, wields a heavy hand in Venezuela's electoral process.

In a 19 November post on X (formerly Twitter), outgoing US Secretary of State Antony Blinken recognised Edmundo González Urrutia as Venezuela's president-elect. The opposition leader had fled to Spain for exile following the 28 July election.

Continued........This isn't the first time Washington has stoked the flames of regime change in Venezuela. In 2019, Washington recognised Juan Guaidó as Venezuela's interim president following Nicolás Maduro’s 2018 election. And during his first stint as US President, Donald Trump openly considered invading Venezuela. Marco Rubio, a child of Cuban immigrants who arrived in the US two years before the Cuban revolution, is Trump's choice for secretary of state and is expected to continue a hardline stance against Venezuela, which he has referred to as a ‘narco-dictatorship.’

Do Venezuela's estimated 304 billion barrels of crude oil reserves, the largest in the world, have something to do with it?

Be the judge.

ALLIANCE OF SAHEL STATES:
A MODEL FOR AFRICA?

The Alliance of Sahel States’ revolutionary posture and its transformative impact on Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger has captured the imaginations of Pan-Africanists across the continent. But it’s also clear that the anti-neo-colonial project needs defending, being at risk from the very forces it rejects. To highlight the issue - and take stock of the AES’s achievements so far - a special three-day conference is being held in Niamey, noscriptd “In Solidarity with the Peoples of the Sahel.”

African Stream’s Inemesit Richardson is on the ground in Niamey, Niger, at the Conference in Solidarity with the Peoples of the Sahel taking place 19-21 November.

Government officials and civil society groups met for three days to discuss strengthening the revolution in Africa’s Sahel region. Hundreds of Nigeriens represented women's organisations, student organisations, trade unions and other groups.

International delegates arrived from Kenya, Zambia, Guinea-Bissau, South Africa, Venezuela, Cuba, Ghana, Benin, Ivory Coast, the United States and China, making it perhaps the most international Alliance of Sahel States (AES) conference.

The conference’s organisers—West African People's Organisation and Pan-Africanism Today— gave rousing opening speeches. The Governor of Niamey Region and Niger Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine (@A_Mahamanezeine on X) also spoke.

Continued……In the first photo, Richardson spoke with Abdourahamane Elhadj Oumarou (@abder2810 on X), Niger section leader of grassroots political group Urgences Panafricanistes (@UrgencesPanaf on X) and the official spokesperson for Nigerien civil society during the opening ceremony. He is one of Niger’s well-respected anti-imperialist voices, with decades of experience organising against French and U.S. neo-colonialism.

A panel on the global fight against imperialism featured speakers, such as Venezuelan Vice-Minister for North America Carlos Ron (@CarlosJRonVE on X) and Socialist Party of Zambia (@SPZambia on X) founder and President Fred M'membe (@drfredmmembe on X). They shared their experiences and that of their respective countries. M'membe emphatically declared that the time has come to dispel all imperialist propaganda regarding military coups d’état and lend support to the AES. Progressive forces worldwide heeded the call by coming together in Niamey.
