VIDEO CLAIMS KENYANS DEMOLISHING 'BARBECUE' BASE

This video claims to show Kenyan police officers deployed in Haiti demolishing former Haitian police officer Jimmy ‘Barbecue’ Chérizier’s stronghold. It comes amidst sentiment that Kenyan police, on a US-backed Multinational Security Support Mission in the Caribbean state since June, have been ineffective in ensuring peace.

The Caribbean country has remained in a state of turmoil since the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse. For years prior, chaos reigned amidst foreign interventions, coups d'état and exploitation of the masses by multinational corportations.

PARIS EYEING NIGERIA AMID LOSS OF FRANCAFRIQUE

Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu embarked on 27 November on a two-day state visit to France, emphasising mutual respect and equality in strengthening French-Nigerian relations, mainly through investments in critical sectors like agriculture, energy, and education.

The visit comes amidst France's waning influence in Africa, marked by military base closures, French troops booted out and strained diplomatic ties following people-backed coups d’état in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger in 2021-23.

With Chad and Senegal this week also rejecting a French military presence signals further former coloniser France's decline in Africa’s Sahel region.

Nigeria, France’s fourth-largest African trading partner, represented French interests by spearheading the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)-led sanctions on Niger over its 2023 coup.

Chad has become the latest African state to end a defence cooperation pact with former coloniser France.

In a Foreign Ministry statement issued on 28 November, the country straddling the Sahara Desert and the arid Sahel region announced the termination of this pact. The announcement came just hours after French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot’s visit.

Chadian Foreign Minister Abderaman Koulamallah said in the statement that in ‘accordance with the provisions of the agreement, [Chad] undertakes to respect the terms laid down for its termination, including the notice period.’ However, the timeframe for a French troop departure was unclear as of press time.

France has stationed about 1,000 military personnel in the capital, N'Djamena, Abéché in the east and Faya in the north. In April, Chad's air force chief ordered about 100 US troops at the Adji Kossei Air Base near N’Djamena to cease operations.

AFRICANS IN SOLIDARITY WITH SAHEL REVOLUTIONS AT NIGER CONFERENCE, PT. 2

During 19-21 November, Niger’s capital of Niamey became a meeting point for Pan-Africanists and anti-imperialists from about 30 countries to attend the Conference in Solidarity with the Peoples of the Sahel, organised by West Africa People’s Organisation and Pan-Africanism Today.

Continued......African Stream was on the ground at this three-day event. In this video, our reporter, Inemesit Richardson, spoke to conference participants, panellists, and organisers from Ghana (@blaisetulo3 of @socialistghana), Kenya (@bookerbiro of @communistske), Zambia (@drfredmmembe of @spzambia), the US (@eugenepuryear of @btnewsroom) and South Africa (@mikaelanhondo of @tri_continental). While not featured here, participants also came from countries such as China, India, Cuba and Venezuela.

Since 26 July 2023, Niger has attracted global attention for its revolutionary fervour and its people-backed anti-imperialist government known as the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP). Niger's new president, Abdourahamane Tiani, came to power via military coup d’état on that date. Soon after, Niger expelled both French and US military troops and revoked the French company, Orano's, uranium mining contract. Niger is the third country in the region to oust a Western-aligned leader, following in the footsteps of Mali and Burkina Faso. Together, the three countries make up the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), a Pan-African confederation seeking to eliminate their colonially imposed borders, move toward a federation and eventually unify Africa.

KEMI BADENOCH: 'WHITE SUPREMACY IN BLACK FACE'

The UK’s newly-elected Conservative Party leader, Kemi Badenoch, has faced widespread criticism from Nigerians and other Black people who say she panders and appeals to far-right racists.

That includes London-based Nigerian journalist Nels Abbey (@NelsAbbey on X) calling her 'white supremacy in blackface' and the ‘most prominent member of white supremacy’s Black collaborator class [in Britain].' He added that ‘a victory for Badenoch is an obvious, unprecedented and once inconceivable victory for racism.’

Here are some reasons Badenoch is being received in this manner.

MALEMA'S PRINCIPLED POSITION ON XENOPHOBIA

Julius Malema, the leader of South Africa's Economic Freedom Fighters party (@effsouthafrica), will go down in history for his principled position on xenophobia.

While Western politicians like US President-elect Donald Trump and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer have fearmongered to win votes—whether demonising Haitians in the US or Bangladeshis in the UK—Malema has stood up time and time again against xenophobia, knowing it could cost him votes.

In this 2019 video clip from a Soweto-based memorial for Zimbabwean leader Robert Mugabe (1924-2019), @julius_s_malema (X) called out Black South Africans who have targeted migrants from other African countries over the past two decades. However, he said they have been attacking the wrong people over systemic challenges, such as rising unemployment and high crime levels, in one of the most unequal countries in the world.

Continued.....In the past, xenophobic rhetoric had been confined, for the most part, to the fringes of the political spectrum. However, in recent years, mainstream politicians have jumped on the bandwagon to secure votes.

The EFF is one of the parties that has consistently and unapologetically rejected xenophobia despite being well aware that such a position could endanger their support.

IS 'WAKANDA FOREVER' A PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE?

While many of our people celebrated the release of the ‘Black Panther’ film franchise in 2018 for depicting a narrative that could empower Africans, West Africa Weekly's (@westafricaweek on X) founder and investigative journalist @DavidHundeyin (X) has put forth a perspective that many Africans may not have considered.

Continued.......
In this clip from a 2023 episode of ‘theREN Experience’ podcast, Hundeyin argued that ‘Black Panther’ is psychological warfare on Africans, potentially shaping how we view ourselves. Africa's largest resource is its 1.52-billion population that is neglected by poor governance and continued colonial exploitation. Yet, ‘Black Panther’, Hundeyin argues, only puts forth that Africans are an unintelligent group whose only source of strength is vibranium, a fictional metal, and that power can only be obtained through violence. Moreover, the fictional country of ‘Wakanda’ is isolated, contrary to the real-life integration and cooperation needed for Africans to thrive despite European-colonial borders.

Do you think ‘Black Panther’ is Hollywood’s best offering for empowering our people, or is it just another tool of psychological warfare? Let us know what you think in the comments.

HUMANITARIAN CRISES AFFECT 123M AFRICAN SCHOOL CHILDREN

This month, the African Union Annual Humanitarian Symposium brought together delegates to discuss the ongoing humanitarian crises in Africa and its impact on internally displaced children. Displacement robs children of their childhoods, disrupting access to education, as they are forced to constantly flee from danger.

In a poignant speech, Mahlaba Mamba, Eswatini's Permanent Representative to the African Union (@MfaicSd on X), shared alarming statistics: Humanitarian crises affect an estimated 123 million school-aged children, with 46 million out of school.
