Continued….. Many times already, Israel has broken the short-lived ceasefire in Gaza that went into effect on 19 January. A military onslaught on 18 March k*lled more than 400 Palestinians in Gaza. This attack adds to the possibly more than 186,000 killed since the 7 October 2023 escalation, according to medical journal Lancet.

H*mas blames the US for the deaths, claiming it ‘exposes the falsity of its [US] claims about caring for de-escalation’ since Israel notified Washington in advance and the US has primarily funded Israel’s military onslaught since 2023.

ANTI-CHINA BOT FARM IN GHANA?

A recent report about Niger kicking out Chinese company managers that didn’t comply with the country’s rules led many on X to denounce China. However, their posts looked like word-for-word copies, leading West Africa history buff Tommy Miles (@tommymiles on X) to conclude these accounts were part of a coordinated US digital campaign to discredit China in Africa.

Continued….. China’s rapid economic rise since it began allowing foreign investment in 1978 has challenged Western dominance, particularly in Africa, where Chinese loans and investments have made significant strides in building infrastructure over the past 25 years.

In response, the US intensified efforts to counter China’s influence, with the US Congress allocating $1.6 billion to anti-China propaganda efforts through a law noscriptd ‘Countering the PRC Malign Influence Fund Authorization Act of 2023.’ The US has also pushed anti-China messaging through outlets like AFRICOM’s Africa Defense Forum and the recently dismantled Voice of America. Meanwhile, the US does not similarly scrutinise other Western powers’ exploitation of Africa.

Our reporter, William Sakawa (@_nehemiah_sakawa on IG), breaks it down.

Psychological oppression can be more powerful than the physical kind. While wounds inflicted on the body may heal with time, those inflicted on minds can permanently change the way we think and hence act. Mental slavery remains a great barrier to genuine African emancipation. Many of us still need to rid ourselves of mental shackles designed to make us ‘good slaves.’

SOUTH AFRICA COALITION DOOMSDAY FOR WHOM?

After long-time ruling party African National Congress (ANC) lost its majority in South Africa’s 2024 elections, opposition parties Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) were put forth as likely candidates for a coalition government.

However, in a move that came as a surprise to many, the ANC opted to go into a coalition with the right-wing Democratic Alliance (DA), which for years has opposed ANC policies seeking to redress the legacy of apartheid, which still affects many Black South Africans, economically and socially.

The ANC’s decision to align with the DA is widely seen as having been pushed by powerful white business forces that did not want to see the EFF and MK in government.

Continued……In this clip, activist Darren Campher responds to Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis’ comments about the ANC/EFF/MK alliance being a doomsday scenario for white settlers. Despite having Africa’s biggest GDP, the country’s wealth is concentrated with the minority white-settler population, who own 72 per cent of private farmland despite comprising less than 8 per cent of the population. Meanwhile, Black South Africans suffer poverty, unemployment and landlessness, with only a tiny Black elite integrated into the economy.

Parties like the EFF that champion greater African custody of South Africa’s resources, such as appropriation of land without compensation, are a threat to white monopoly capital, the primary beneficiary of South Africa’s economic success.

Oil-rich Libya has been having a hard time getting production back up to the levels prior to the brutal, NATO-led regime-change operation against Muammar Gaddafi. But the reopening of a major oil field after ten years should give output a boost. It’s hoped that the Mabruk site will be pumping out 25,000 barrels a day come July.

The story is yet another illustration of how much the 2011 invasion destabilised Libya. The country was plunged into a bloody civil war from 2014 to 2020, with foreign powers supporting rival governments in the country. It has also been a hotbed of radical extremist groups and people-trafficking gangs - with open slave markets where Black Africans were sold for as little as $400, prompting the African Union to express its outrage in 2017.

REACTION: MANDELA ‘A TERRORIST’?

Nelson Mandela did not go to prison for his politics but because he was a “terrorist” trying to overthrow South Africa's “legitimate” government - that's the view put forward by South African White-supremacist Ernst Roets during a recent appearance on US podcaster and right-wing commentator, Tucker Carlson's show.

Roets, who until recently was the deputy leader of AfriForum, a South African White-supremacist organisation that’s been at the forefront of a global smear campaign against the nation’s leadership, claimed that Mandela and his party, the African National Congress (ANC), were involved in terrorist activities.

Roets' comments are part of a well-orchestrated campaign by local and global White-supremacist forces to portray White South Africans as victims of discrimination by the current ANC-led government.

In this reaction video, we push back on some of their talking points.

GROK: MUSK X CEO OF DISINFORMATION

As people debate whether AI can be relied upon or not, X’s in-app Grok chatbot has shown it’s pretty good at spotting a liar. When asked who the biggest spreader of disinformation was on the platform, it replied with none other than… X-owner Elon Musk (@elonmusk)!

Amusing? Perhaps. But far more concerning is that the tech billionaire with over 220 million followers on X (and an algorithm that boosts his posts) has been weaponising his influence to spread dangerous falsehoods, particularly about Africa and its people.

While some may want to let the Trump sidekick off the hook by claiming he’s just an ignoramus, many suspect it’s an intentional effort to spread a certain agenda. Here we correct some of the falsehoods he’s been pushing.

EU’S GREEN IMPERIALISM: KEEPING AFRICA BACK?

Has the EU just sent a Trojan Horse to South Africa? An extra few billion dollars to roll out clean energy sounds brilliant. But Brussels’ recent ‘gift’ to Pretoria may be concealing a more cunning agenda. Europe, which has already had its ‘dirty’ Industrial Revolution, doesn’t want Africa to catch up and become a power house. So it dresses up its fears as concerns for the environment, pushing less reliable solar and wind solutions on us. Bear in mind that the Europeans currently pollute way more than Africans do - and there are far fewer of them, so their sins are greater. Yet apparently it’s Africa that’s got to clean up its act while they carry on cutting coal deals with countries they lecture about using… too much coal! African Stream’s William Sakawa explores the sham that is Brussels’ green conscience in his latest video.

15 BODIES PULLED FROM WELL IN SUDAN’S FORMER RSF-SEIZED AREA

On 16 March, Red Crescent volunteers pulled 15 bodies from the bottom of a well in a recently recaptured area of East Nile district in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum. Speaking to Reuters about the incident, Hisham Zain al-Abdin, the director of forensic medicine for Khartoum state, said that most of the 15 victims had been shot in the head, while the injuries on some suggest ‘they were thrown in the well alive.’ The director said bodies continue to be found in areas that the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) recaptured from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group.

Reuters reported that Hussein al-Faki, one of the residents who reported the bodies to authorities, said local people had tried to bury the bodies, but armed men controlling the area during the RSF occupation ‘warned us not to go near them.’

Continued……The UN notes that both sides in the war—the SAF and the RSF—have committed atrocities amounting to war crimes since 2018. In January, the US placed sanctions on leaders of both warring parties.

However, in this foreign-backed proxy war that kicked off on 15 April 2023, the United Arab Emirates-bankrolled RSF is responsible for most of the atrocities and are accused of g*nocide. Meaningful accountability measures against the UAE remain amiss.

London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine’s Sudan Research Group estimates the proxy war had k*lled at least 60,000 people in its first 14 months in just Khartoum alone. Plus, in May 2024, US envoy Tom Perriello estimated 150,000 deaths.

Today, the proxy war has displaced over 14 million people and left over half the country’s people—30.4 million—in dire need of aid. Not only is Sudan suffering the worst humanitarian catastrophe in the world, it is also the ‘largest as well as the fastest growing displacement crisis globally,’ according to the UN, with a total displaced population that is ‘greater than the entire population of Switzerland.’
