We got approximately half a month left for Ramadan insha Allah:

▪️Get yourself familiar with weak/inauthentic ahadith and review the Fiqh of Fasting

▪️Catch up on missed fasts

▪️Purge and declutter your nafs by engaging more in 'ibadah and the Speech of Allah rather than wasting time in idle talks and amusement

Ramadan is approaching but death may also approach us any moment now. So let's hold ourselves accountable, repent and strive towards our Rabb so that even if we don't get to reach Ramadan, then bi-idhnillah we still meet our Lord with Him pleased with us...

May Allah grant us a good ending.

Make the intention to leave sinning for good, and not just for Ramadan!

Shaykh ul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [رحمه الله] said:

«من يعزم على ترك المعاصي في شهر رمضان دون غيره فليس هذا بتائب مطلقاً ولكنه تارك للفعل في رمضان.»

Whoever makes a firm resolve to leave off sinning in the month of Ramadan rather than any other month then this person is not he who absolutely repents but he is someone who leaves off an action in Ramadan.❞

[Al-Fatawa, (10/743)]

Yahya bin Muaadh said:
The smart individual is not the one whose greatest goal is other than seeking the pardon of Allah. (The smart individual is not the one who) seeks forgiveness with his tongue, while his heart is firmly attached to sin, and he truly intends to return to sin after the completion of Ramadan. This individual’s fast is rejected, and acceptance is closed in his face.

Ka’b ibn Mālik said:
Whoever fasts Ramadan while inwardly saying: Once the month is over, I will disobey Allah; this person’s fasting is rejected.

All of the ahādīth of congratulating for Ramaḍān are all weak: Nothing is
authentic concerning it

5. “There has come to you Ramaḍān, a blessed month, the fasting of which Allāh has obligated upon you. In it, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained up.
In it there is a night which is better than a thousand months; whoever is deprived of its goodness is indeed deprived.”

[ ☑️ The confirmed report: “When the month of Ramadan begins, the gates of mercy are opened, the gates of Jahannam are closed and the devils are chained up.”]

6. On the last day of Shaˋbān, the Messenger of Allāh صلى الله عليه وسلم addressed us and said: “O people! A great month is coming to you. A blessed month. In it, there is a night that is better than a thousand months. Allāh Has obligated its fasting and made it voluntary to pray its nights. Whoever draws nearer to Allāh by performing any of the voluntary good deeds in this month shall receive the same reward as there is for performing an obligatory deed at any other time. And whoever performs an obligatory deed in it shall receive the reward of performing seventy obligations at any other time. And it is the month of patience, and the reward for patience is Paradise. And it is the month of equality. And it is a month in which a believer’s provisions are increased. Whoever gives food to a fasting person to break his fast, it will be like he freed a slave and he will have his sins forgiven.” It was said: “O Messenger of Allāh, not all of us possess the means whereupon we can give a fasting person [provisions] to break his fast.” He said: “Allāh gives the same reward to the one who gives a fasting person [provisions] to break the fast, a sip of milk, a date, or a drink of water. And whoever feeds a person who was fasting until he is full, it will be a cause for his sins to be forgiven, and Allāh will give him a drink from my Ḥawḍ [cistern], after which he will not be thirsty until he enters Paradise. And he will have the same reward as him [i.e. the fasting person] without his reward being diminished at all. And it is a month; the beginning of which is mercy, the middle of which is forgiveness and the end of which is emancipation from the Fire. And whoever lessens the burden of his bondsmen in it [i.e. this month], Allāh will free him from the Fire.”

7. “Count the (the appearance of)the crescent of Sha’ban for Ramaḍān.”

[☑️ The confirmed report: “Do not precede the month of Ramaḍān by a day nor by two days.”]

The aḥādīth of remembrance and supplication when seeing the new moon of Ramaḍān: There is nothing authentic concerning it

8. That the when Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم would see the new moon, he would say:
“O Allāh, Bring it over us with blessing, faith, security and Islām. My Lord and your Lord is Allāh (Allāhumma ahlilhu `alaynā bil-yumni wal-īmān was-salāmati wal-Islām: Rabbī wa Rabbuka Allāh).

9. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم used to say, when Rajab began: “O Allāh, bless for us Rajab and Shaˋbān and bless for us Ramaḍān.” And he used to say: “Friday night is honourable and its day is luminous.”

10. ‘If the middle of Shaˋbān comes, then do not fast.'

Sufficing with the testimony of one person in seeing the new moon: There is nothing authentic concerning it

11. “The people looked for the new moon, so I informed the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ that I had sighted it. So, he fasted and commanded the people to fast.”

12. “A Bedouin man came to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and said: ‘O Messenger of Allāh, I have seen the new moon tonight.’ He said: ‘Do you bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allāh and that Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allāh?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘O Bilal, announce to the people that they should fast tomorrow.’”

"And what is correct is that it is not accepted except by the sighting of two just people. And this is what is confirmed from the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم."

________
Opinion of Shaykh al-Muhaddith Sulayman al 'Alwān

Shaykh al 'Alwān, however is of the opinion that it is enough if one just man sees the new moon, and what is looked at is his truthfulness and justness. This is based on the hadith of Ibn 'Umar which was narrated by Abū Dawūd. When he witnessed the moon, he reported the news to Prophet ﷺ and Prophet ﷺ commanded others to fast. Shaykh 'Alwān considers the chain of this narration to be strong. He also mentions that there are a group of scholars who say that two witnesses are needed instead of one, and that they take as dalīl the hadith of 'Abur-Rahmān ibn Zayd ibn Khattāb which says: "So if two witnesses witness, fast and break the fast." In its chain is al-Hajjāj ibn Artā who is weak (Daīf), and every other chain of this Hadīth without the mention of al-Hajjāj is wrong and weak. Indeed there is no doubt that two witnesses are needed to end every month and to begin the rest. The only exception for this is Ramaḍān for which only one witness is enough. For the rest of the months, however, without a doubt two witnesses are needed.

See: 50 benefits from the Fiqh of Fasting by Shaykh Al-Muhaddith Sulaymān al-'Alwān (compiled by Dr. 'Abdullah ibn Khamūdul Farīh)

____
Our Note:

We have mentioned the opinion of two scholars of Hadīth regarding the strength of narration in Abū Dawūd and their respective opinions on whether one or two witnesses suffice for the sighting of the moon for Ramadān.

Shaykh Abū Alī does not consider it to be Sahīh (rather he says it is Munkar) and that two witnesses are needed, while Shaykh al 'Alwān says the chain is strong and Ramadān moon sighting is the exception to the rule that two witnesses are needed (one is enough for Ramadān). This is absolutely fine for scholars to have some differences of opinion [we stated both to clarify]

The Greatest Fiqh Series on Fasting

We highly recommend everyone to take this class before Ramadān. This is by far the greatest Fiqh series on fasting. It's also a great time to review and look back on old notes, for those who have already taken this class. Even though only 16 classes were released of this series, it is still extremely beneficial and brimming with gems of 'ilm. The Shaykh's unique style of teaching covers all the different opinions on every issue, with an explanation on the correct opinion at the end. This is a class both the laymen and students of knowledge cannot miss out on!
