There appear to be strong parallels with how the outbreak of smallpox in the Kimberley diamond fields in 1883/84 was dealt with and the somewhat arcane nature of the amended draft health regulations regarding Covid treatment (The Mercury, April 6).

Originating from migrant Mozambican workers, between November 1883 and the latter part of 1884, smallpox accounted for the deaths of 600 African mine labourers. For mining magnate and capitalist Cecil Rhodes, the possible closure of the diamond fields as a result of the disease was a prospect he refused to consider. Consequently, he ordered what historian Russel Viljoen termed “a conspiracy of silence.”

The Alliance of Natural Health Products South Africa was victorious after a five-year fight with SAHPRA and the Minister of Health, who were trying to block access to much-needed and life-saving natural vitamins and minerals.

The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) has been attempting to bridle, through a series of regulations for complementary medicines published in 2017, the natural health industry. These regulations would essentially shut down the entire natural health industry by classifying natural health and wellness products as pharmaceuticals and making them unavailable to the public unless they have prenoscriptions.

The impact of this would be to take away the public’s right to choose and use natural remedies by redefining them as pharmaceutical products. So, if we consider the covid pandemic, for example, it will mean that vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc and all the other natural remedies that have been so essential for people’s immune systems to remain strong and healthy throughout this time would become unavailable.

In South Africa, homeschooling has only really been ‘a thing’ since 1996 when it was legalised through the South African Schools Act (84 of 1996). At that time, a mere 50 families were home-schooling.

These days it’s estimated at around 120,000 – though we suspect it’s way more, especially after the past two years of draconian Covid measures in schools where a good many parents removed their children from educational institutions to home school then instead.
