Naver Labs Europe (Grenoble, France) is looking for a motivated researcher to join, at a post-doctoral level, a project on Personalised News Recommendation. This project aims at improving the user engagement in a currently deployed system, by better capturing volatile user interests, while ensuring fairness and avoiding information polarisation (aka filter bubble).
The selected candidate will perform her/his work inside the Natural Language Processing team, interacting with scientists from the team, the centre and colleagues in Korea.
Requirements:
- Knowledge of latest developments in context-aware sequential recommendation.
- Good publication record in top-tier information retrieval or machine learning conferences.
- Strong development skills, preferably in Python and knowledge of deep learning frameworks (preferably Pytorch or Keras)

The Idiap Research Institute seeks qualified candidates for two PhD student position in the field of natural language understanding, developing deep learning methods for textual entailment and opinion summarisation.
The research will be conducted in the framework of the Swiss NSF funded project Learning Representations of Abstraction for Opinion Summarisation. One of the successful candidates will investigate modelling abstraction relationships between texts (textual entailment), and the other will investigate summarising large collections of opinions (opinion summarisation). Opinion summarisation must abstract away from the details of individual opinions to find consensus statements which are entailed by a significant proportion of opinions.
This project will model these natural language understanding tasks through fundamental advances in representation learning and deep learning architectures. The work will start from Dr. Henderson's work on modelling abstraction in deep learning architectures, where learned vectors represent entailment rather than the usual similarity. Successes in the unsupervised learning of word vectors for entailment will be extended to deep learning architectures for the compositional semantics of texts. Methods for finding the intersection of information in vectors will be extended to clustering texts by their shared content and generating abstract summaries.
The ideal PhD candidate should hold a Master degree in computer science, computational linguistics or related fields. She or he should have a background in machine learning, optimisation, or natural language processing. The applicant should also have strong programming skills.
The successful PhD candidates will join the Natural Language Understanding group at Idiap, under the supervision of Dr. James Henderson. They will also become doctoral students at EPFL (http://www.epfl.ch) conditional on parallel application to, and acceptance by, the EPFL Doctoral School (http://phd.epfl.ch/applicants). Appointment for the PhD position is for a maximum of 4 years, provided successful progress, and should lead to a dissertation. Annual gross salary ranges from 47,000 Swiss Francs (first year) to 50,000 Swiss Francs (last year). Starting date is to be negotiated, within 2018. Harnessing a cancer patient’s immune system to fight their disease is a promising new frontier in cancer treatment. Our multi-site machine learning group is collaborating with experts in cancer immunotherapy at several leading cancer centers and universities (https://www.standuptocancer.org/press_release/view/Convergence_Teams_Microsoft). Our goal is to figure out how to better target therapies to patients by learning from biomedical data. We have an open RA position starting immediately. This is a contract position through June 30, 2019, with potential to extend. The position is ideal for a recent undergraduate or M. Eng student wishing to gain research experience prior to pursuing a Ph.D. Interviews will start immediately.

Two postdoctoral fellow positions specializing in machine learning and signal processing for applications in Critical Care Medicine is available in Point of Care Analytics Lab at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center–Oak Ridge National Lab’s Center for Biomedical Informatics. Point of Care Analytics (PCA) is a laboratory for innovation at the intersection of deep learning, signal processing, medical science, and systems design. PoCA develops novel and impactful applications and algorithms that can be used to predict abnormal medical conditions before they show clinical signs at the bed-side.
A successful applicant must have a Ph.D. of high standing in a relevant discipline (e.g. Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Medical Informatics, etc.) within the last five years and a strong research track record. Strong programming and communication skills are required. Prior experience in Convolutional Neural Network, Recurrent Neural Networks, or real-time signal processing would be a strong asset.
