Are you interested to use ML to discover how the brain builds mental models of the world to guide decision-making, and how we can use principles of neural information processing to build artificial dANNs with brain-like properties? Join our research team, which has made highly-visible progress in these domains:
https://elifesciences.org/articles/29793v1
https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/7727651/
We are particularly interested in how agents can use limited data in noisy and non-stationary environments to make robust decisions. We are focused on merging hierarchical internal representations and reinforcement learning for attention, feature extraction, few-shot learning, and model-based search for solving complex problems.
We seek excellent candidates with training in quantitative disciplines (CS, math, physics, engineering ...), and experience with fundamental ML concepts. Experience in neuroscience is not required, but an interest in brain function is strongly preferred. Must be able to work in a multidiciplinary team, including collaborating with experimentalists in the lab that are generating unique high-value data.
Please send a statement of interest, CV, and a copy of trannoscripts (unofficial is OK) to:
Aaron Gruber, PhD
Associate Professor, Department of Neuroscience
Associate Director, Canadian Center for Behavioural Neuroscience

Quants at the D. E. Shaw group apply mathematical techniques and write software to develop, analyze, and implement statistical models for our computerized financial trading strategies. Keen insight and innovation are essential for creating solutions for trading profitably in markets around the globe. Specific responsibilities range from examining trading data to increase profitability, decrease risk, and reduce transaction costs to conceiving new trading ideas and devising the simulations needed to test them. Successful quant candidates have traditionally been exceptionally talented students at the top of their respective math, physics, engineering, computer science, and other technical and quantitative programs. While Ph.D.’s in these fields are common, many of our quants join us with undergraduate or master’s degrees. A considerable number have competed successfully in the United States and International Math Olympiads, as well as the Putnam Competition. Members of our highly versatile team possess the wide range of quantitative and programming abilities necessary to solve challenging problems that are critical to the firm’s continued success.

Dear Colleagues,
I would like to inform you personally about a decision that has not been easy for me. As you can see from the attached press information due to be published this afternoon, I have decided not to seek another term as UNIVERSITY President when my four-year term ends on 31 December 2018. My early announcement will allow the UNIVERSITY Board to begin searching for a successor immediately. I will continue to fulfill all the duties and responsibilities of my office up to the end of this year.
In my role as UNIVERSITY President, my priority has been to advance the university’s development. As you are all aware, it is crucial that UNIVERSITY is able to keep up with intensifying international competition. To respond to this challenge, I have worked closely with the Executive Board to launch many initiatives such as the UNIVERSITY programme, some of which – like the introduction of the Bachelor’s degree in medicine – have already been completed with your collaboration and support. I have found this task extremely rewarding, but also very demanding. After serving a total of seven years as UNIVERSITY Rector and President, I am therefore ready to hand over the reins to someone else. Purely from a personal perspective, I am looking forward to spending the rest of my academic career as a professor, actively engaged in teaching and research once more.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your kind support and look forward to working towards our common goals with energy and enthusiasm over the coming months.
Yours sincerely,
