Dear Colleagues,

I would like to inform you personally about a decision that has not been easy for me. As you can see from the attached press information due to be published this afternoon, I have decided not to seek another term as UNIVERSITY President when my four-year term ends on 31 December 2018. My early announcement will allow the UNIVERSITY Board to begin searching for a successor immediately. I will continue to fulfill all the duties and responsibilities of my office up to the end of this year.

In my role as UNIVERSITY President, my priority has been to advance the university’s development. As you are all aware, it is crucial that UNIVERSITY is able to keep up with intensifying international competition. To respond to this challenge, I have worked closely with the Executive Board to launch many initiatives such as the UNIVERSITY programme, some of which – like the introduction of the Bachelor’s degree in medicine – have already been completed with your collaboration and support. I have found this task extremely rewarding, but also very demanding. After serving a total of seven years as UNIVERSITY Rector and President, I am therefore ready to hand over the reins to someone else. Purely from a personal perspective, I am looking forward to spending the rest of my academic career as a professor, actively engaged in teaching and research once more.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your kind support and look forward to working towards our common goals with energy and enthusiasm over the coming months.

The Center for Cognitive Ubiquitous Computing (CUbiC, cubic.asu.edu) at Arizona State University is searching for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant, a non-tenure track faculty position.

CUbiC is an interdisciplinary research center focused on cutting edge research in human-centered multimedia computing with specific focus on assistive, rehabilitative and healthcare applications. Our research spans three areas of multimedia computing: sensing and processing, recognition and learning, interaction and delivery.

Duties and Resposibilities

The ideal candidate should have education and research experience in computer science with a focus on machine learning and computer vision. Skills and experience with strong written and oral communication; paper and grant writing; strong programming/developing; and student mentoring are also taken into consideration.

Qualifications
—------------
1. Ph.D. in computer science (or equivalent area of specialization)
2. Demonstrated understanding and application of scientific techniques in the field of machine learning and computer vision
3. Demonstrated experience in publishing papers, writing grant proposals, conducting research on funded projects and supervising students
4. Strong written and oral communication skills

🔍 در طول این چند ماه، جدا از کارهای عقب افتاده‌‌تان در ایران، و کارهای مربوط به رفتن، می‌توانید روی موارد زیر کار کنید:

۱- زبان انگلیسی‌تان را تقویت کنید.
۲- شروع به مطالعه‌ی زبان آلمانی کنید.
۳- در حوزه‌ی درس‌ها و یا پروژه‌ای که در آن‌جا خواهید داشت مطالعه کنید. مثلا مطالعه‌ی مقالات اخیر استادتان در آلمان‌.

🔍 اما پیشنهاد ما این است که از بین موارد فوق، روی مورد اول کار‌ کنید؛ یعنی تقویت زبان انگلیسی. مگر این‌که زبان انگلیسی‌تان به میزان خیلی زیادی عالی باشد. منظور ما از عالی تافل بالای ۱۰۰ یا آیلتس بالای ۷.۵ نیست! در غیر این ‌صورت بهترین کار از نظر ما تقویت زبان انگلیسی است.

🔍 ناگفته پیداست که منظور از تقویت زبان، تقویت هر ۴ اسکیل لیسنینگ، اسپیکینگ، رایتینگ، و ریدینگ است. اما در این بین، تقویت لیسنینگ را بیشتر از همه توصیه می‌کنیم. شاید در آزمون تافل/آیلتس بیشترین نمره را از این اسکیل کسب کرده باشید؛ حتی در این‌ حالت نیز تقویت لیسنینگ را بیشتر از ۳ اسکیل دیگر پیشنهاد می‌کنیم!

🔍 یکی از مهم‌ترین شرط‌های پیشرفت شما در یک کشور خارجی، برقراری ارتباط موثر، اول از همه‌ با استاد راهنما و دیگر اساتید گروه، و سپس با پژوهش‌گران و دانشجویان دیگر است. درست‌ است که برای این ارتباط به اسپیکینگ خوب نیاز دارید، اما پیش از آن باید بفهمید که چه می‌گویند و سپس نظر خود را بگویید. این‌ امر به خصوص در ارتباط با استاد راهنمای‌تان بسیار، بسیار و بسیار مهم است!

🔍 در ایران پندار ریشه‌‌‌داری (!) در بین عموم و برخی خواص وجود دارد که می‌گوید: 'آدم اگه تو محیط باشه ۳-۴ ماهه زبانش توپ می‌شه!'
