PhD position in quantum computing at University of Trento

APPLICATION DEADLINE:  August 23, 2018, 4.00 PM  CEST

Topic:

Definition and simulation of algorithms on an adiabatic quantum computer - AdiabaticQC

P.I.:

- Luciano Serafini (ICT department of Fondazione Bruno Kessler, Trento)
- Andrea Passerini (Dept. of Information Engineering and Computer Science, University of Trento)
- Valter Moretti (Dept. of Mathematics, University of Trento)

Contacts:

serafini@fbk.eu; andrea.passerini@unitn.it; valter.moretti@unitn.it

Synthetic denoscription of the activity and expected research outcome:

The research activity will be focused on developing and testing a methodology for encoding algorithms in the target Hamiltonian and in the evolution scheme of an Adiabatic Quantum Computer. In particular main goals are: The direct implementation and simulation of the Grover algorithm on the target adiabatic architectures, the implementation of a compiler based on the universality theorem of adiabatic computing to generate the Hamiltonian that encodes the considered problem. The strategy will be modeling the adiabatic scheme (problem Hamiltonian and a suitable evolution) as a varying scalar function and learning it with Bayesian Optimization and reinforcement learning. A final research outcome will be the application of the methodology to implement, simulate and test a version of the genetic quantum algorithm.

Ideal candidate (skills and competences):

- Either master's degree in Physics or master's degree in Computer Science;
- Bases of either quantum computing or machine learning;
- Attitude to interdisciplinary research;
- Attitude to learn new subjects;
- Knowledge of one major programming language;

Postdoctoral Fellow – Computer Vision in Health Monitoring Applications, Canada

Location: Downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Start Date: Immediately

Closing Date: Until the position is filled

Keywords: Computer Vision, Deep Learning, Human Pose Tracking, Facial Expression Analysis, Machine Learning, Health Monitoring

Denoscription:

The Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Research (AIRR) team at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute (TRI) invites applications to the position of Postdoctoral Fellow. The project relates to the application of deep learning and computer vision techniques to health monitoring. You will join a leading multi-disciplinary research team centred at TRI, part of the University Health Network and affiliated with the University of Toronto.

TRI is the largest rehabilitation hospital in Canada and is the number one rehabilitation research center in the world. We are affiliated with the Department of Computer Science at the University of Toronto, one the best CS schools in the world. We are only a few minutes away from the CS building and also from the Vector Institute. So you will have a chance to attend seminars, talks, and paper reading sessions.

You will be working with real data, from real patients, and solving real-life healthcare problems. At the same time, there are plenty of inspiring computer science questions and challenges to tackle. So you will have a chance (and you are expected to) conduct computer vision (and/or machine learning) research and publish in major CS journals and conferences as well as publications geared towards clinical audiences. We have a goldmine of clinical data, including longitudinal gait and posture data (videos) and facial expressions data (images/videos) of older adults with dementia.

Multi-disciplinary work experience is a plus, but this could also be an ideal position for a hands-on recent graduate who has proven herself/himself in theoretical and algorithm development/implementation aspects and wants to apply her/his knowledge to solve practical problems in healthcare.

Requirements:

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in computer science or a related discipline or will be graduating by September 2018. She or he is also expected to have a solid research and publication record related to computer vision and deep learning (e.g. human pose estimation/tracking, facial expression analysis). A strong publication record and solid programming skills (TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn) are expected.

Application:

The nominal start date is ASAP. There is no official closing date and applications will be reviewed as they are received. To apply, submit your CV and a link to your github page to Dr. Babak Taati. Please include [Computer Vision PDF 2018] in the subject line. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.

Babak Taati, PhD PEng
Scientist, Toronto Rehabilitation Institute – University Health Network
