Research Associate in Quantitative Social Science: Educational Mobility (UCL)

This post represents an exciting opportunity for a quantitative social scientist (e.g. economist, sociologist, social statistician, demographer, social policy) to undertake high-impact research on ‘first in the family students to attend university’. ‘First in Family’ (FiF) refers to students who attend university (and obtain a degree), but whose mother and father did not. This project will be the first large-scale research study on FiF in the UK and will inform national and university level Widening Participation policies.

You will work with Dr Morag Henderson and Dr Nikki Shure on a Nuffield Foundation funded project to examine intergenerational educational mobility. The project involves conducting analysis using Next Steps to identify characteristics of FiF students including academic and non-academic traits compared to their peers who could have been FiF, but who did not achieve a degree, and university students who are not FiF. In addition to this, the project will identify how the FiF measure compares to other markers of disadvantage and analyse the higher education and labour market outcomes of FiF students using Next Steps. The project will also compare the aspirations of potential FiF students from the most recent generation of soon-to-attend university students in the Millennium Cohort Study (MCS) and Longitudinal Study of Young People 2 (LSYPE2) in order to provide first estimates of university aspiration and participation for the next generation.

You will be expected to:

• Conduct high quality research analysis using Next Steps, LSYPE2 and MCS, making use of appropriate advanced quantitative methods

• Contribute to high quality research outputs and policy reports

• Publish research in high quality peer reviewed academic journals

• Present research findings and contribute to workshops, conferences and seminars.

This post is available from 1st October 2018 until 31st March 2020.

Key requirements
Essential

Completion or near-completion of a PhD in a quantitative social science discipline, such as sociology, economics, psychology, social statistics, demography; or with a background in education or other quantitative education-related discipline. Candidates with no PhD, but demonstrating a substantial record of high-quality publications that could be used in submission for a PhD by publication will also be considered. A good understanding of applied quantitative research methods for large-scale [longitudinal] datasets.

Desirable

Expertise in educational research or social inequality research.

Postdoc Opportunity at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine

Can machines learn from longitudinal patient records to predict patients' disease progression? Can we automatically discover diagnostic criteria or phenotypes of patients from Electronic Health Records? Can we use the insights obtained from machine learning to suggest new interventions or treatments towards precision medicine?

We are recruiting a postdoctoral fellow in the Division of Health and Biomedical Informatics at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to conduct research described above, under guidance from Dr. Yuan Luo, Assistant Professor in Departments of Preventive Medicine and (by courtesy) Industrial Engineering and Management Science, as well as Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. The fellow will also have the opportunities to work closely with top-notch clinicians from Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and strong supporting staff from Northwestern Medicine Enterprise Data Warehouse Team.

The successful candidate will have PhD in EECS, Biomedical Informatics, IEMS, Physics or related fields with solid programming skills. Experiences in some of the following areas are desirable: Machine Learning (ML) and/or Natural Language Processing (NLP) and/or time series analysis. The candidate should demonstrate good communication skills and ability to work in a collaborative environment, to coordinate and supervise part of the research project.

We offer a competitive salary and an initial appointment of 12 months, starting Spring/Fall of 2016-2017. Extension of the postdoctoral position for up to 3 years is possible. Northwestern University is an exceptional research institution that has a world-class medical school and is an emerging hub in biomedical informatics; our department is located in downtown Chicago, one of the most vibrant cities in the US.
