PhD student position in Secure and autonomous optical networks
Information about the research
The Internet and the overall development of the digital information society is supported by the optical networks as the underlying critical communication infrastructure. To enable the emerging network services with stringent performance requirements, optical networks need to be programmable, flexible, agile, highly resilient to a wide array of failures, ranging from single-component faults, over disasters, to man-made attacks that target optical network disruption at the physical, or the upper network layers. To this end, the network should have a high degree of situational awareness and self-adaptability. This project will investigate the achievable levels of secure and automated operation of optical networks by addressing the related theoretical and practical challenges. Issues related to cognitive operation monitoring, data analytics and interpretation of the observed performance indicators, security-enhancing optical network design, and autonomous network adaptation will be at the heart of this project. The two ambitious goals of the project are to devise novel solutions fundamental for achieving situational awareness and self-defense from malicious attacks targeting optical-layer security vulnerabilities, and to develop a framework for demonstrating and verifying the autonomous optical network operation. Two PhD students will be recruited.

PhD Thesis Position In NLP : Automatic Classification Using Deep Learning Of Hate Speech Posted On The Internet
The rapid development of the Internet and social networks has brought great benefits to women and men in their daily lives. Unfortunately, the dark side of these benefits has led to an increase in hate speech and terrorism as the most common and powerful threats on a global scale. Hate speech is a type of offensive communication mechanism that expresses an ideology of hatred often using stereotypes. Hate speech can target different societal characteristics such as gender, religion, race, disability, etc. Hate speech is the subject of different national and international legal frameworks. Hate speech is a type of terrorism and often follows a terrorist incident or event.

2 PostDocs “Numerical avalanche hazard prediction, ETH Domain
The WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF is part of the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL and thus of the ETH Domain. WSL focuses on the sustainable use and protection of landscapes and habitats, and a responsible approach to natural hazards. WSL employs approximately 500 people, of whom 140 work at SLF in Davos.
The Research Unit ‘Snow Avalanches and Prevention’ investigates the formation and dynamics of avalanches, develops warning systems for Alpine natural hazards, and issues the Swiss avalanche bulletin. Its research group “Avalanche Formation” is looking for
2 PostDocs “Numerical avalanche hazard prediction"
Within a 2-year project supported by the Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC) you develop a decision support tool that provides automated predictions of avalanche hazard. In collaboration with scientists from SDSC you will first explore massive, yet diverse in space and time, snow and weather data sets to determine the best approach for the multi-fold classification problem. This should allow describing the main avalanche problems and their severity. Then you will develop prediction models and validate those with a focus on operational applicability as supporting tools for avalanche forecasting.
The research will be split between the two PostDocs and the SDSC scientists according to the tasks and competence. Moreover, you collaborate with others researchers and the forecasting team at SLF.
You hold a university degree in either Snow and Avalanche Science and have experience in numerical modeling or in Data Science and have a strong background in machine learning methods. You have good oral and written communication skills, in particular in English. Furthermore, you are well organized, operate independently, and in a structured and efficient way. You like to work in a team, and are keen to transfer your research into practice.

Funded postdoc in developmental neurobiology, U Mass-Amherst
The Pallas lab will be moving from Georgia State University to the University of Massachusetts- Amherst in summer 2019. We are looking for a highly motivated postdoc who is well-trained in electrophysiological approaches to understanding development and plasticity of mammalian visual function. Our interests include: the roles of patterning genes and neural activity in directing the construction of the synaptic connectivity responsible for visual perception; the mechanisms that allow recovery of visual function following injury or sensory deprivation; the regulation of critical periods of synaptic plasticity; and the evolution of developmental mechanisms. Our approaches include in vivo and in vitro electrophysiology, pharmacological manipulation of neural activity, imaging of neurons and neural pathways, gene and protein expression assays, manipulation of gene expression using viral vectors, use of transgenic and knockout mice, and behavioral assays of perception. The successful candidate will receive strong mentoring by a supportive PI. ...

Research Fellow Position in Seizure Prediction
We have a Research Fellow opening through a collaboration between the University of Melbourne and Monash University for someone to develop and crowdsource machine learning and data science approaches to solving seizure prediction. Seizure prediction will enable the generation of warnings so a person with epilepsy can move to safety, or activation of electrical stimulation or drug delivery to prevent seizures. Our team leverages unique long-term human brain activity data to find novel, clinically relevant solutions to seizure prediction, and publishes these findings in the highest impact neurology journals (Lancet Neurology, Nature Reviews Neurology, Nature Neuroscience, Brain, PNAS).
