Postdoctoral position in ancient plant genomics in ERC-funded project TIMBER

The project
The project ‘TIMBER’ Northern Europe's timber resource - chronology, origin and exploitation, led by Aoife Daly, has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement No. 677152). In this project, timber in Northern Europe is being studied, to attain a precise chronology for trade of timber over a long time period (c. 1100 to 1700). Using material and textual evidence to identify the source of timber (provenance) the aim is to map the trade in this construction material and to show the regional and temporal fluctuations in timber exploitation and availability. Using a multi-disciplinary approach (archaeological analysis, archival research and a range of archaeological sciences) on a variety of specific case studies, the team is working together to analyse the sources and destinations of traded timber through time.

PhD Research Fellowship position in Planetary Sciences

Job denoscription
A PhD Research Fellowship position in Planetary Sciences is available at the Centre for Earth Evolution and Dynamics (CEED) at the University of Oslo (UiO).

The fellowship period is for 4 years, with 3 years devoted to carrying out one of the two project alternatives given below. The position also entails a compulsory work load of 25 % that may consist of teaching, supervision duties, and research assistance.

No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo. Starting date no later than 01.10.2019.

There is the choice between two topical options:

A) Mars a habitable planet?

Two missions will land on Mars early 2021 (ExoMars2020 and Mars2020). Both will be dedicated to the study of whether Mars have been once a habitable planet and whether there are relics of life to be found. Mars2020 will also cache samples for future return to Earth. Using spectral and other remote sensing data to describe the composition and morphology, and using cratering statistics to establish a timeline will be the tasks of this project. This work can be complimented by experimental assessment of environmental conditions throughout Martian history.

B) Earth-like exoplanets

Two missions (Plato and Ariel) will in the late 2020ies provide exciting new data on planets in earth-like orbits and of earth-like size. Will we find another Earth? Using all currently available data for exoplanets and our understanding of planetary system evolution, the goal is to examine how likely it is that we will find a planet in similar conditions like those of our Earth. One of the goals is to predict the potential planets from star composition, condensation sequences, degassing, and star planet interaction. This approach is highly challenging as it covers the entire planet formation and evolution, but also allows for a large diversity of studies, which have been performed so far only for gas and ice giants. These will be compared to currently known earth-like planets and future discoveries.

PhD scholarship in Advanced Thermodynamic Models for Water

This PhD project is part of the ERC Advanced Grant “New Paradigm in Electrolyte Thermodynamics” (ElectroThermo) and in particular of the work package (WP1) which is related to the development of a non-primitive electrolyte equation of state. The first step in the development of such a model is to have a complete equation of state which accounts for all “physical” interactions (dipolar, association, etc) and where in principle the dielectric constant is an output rather than an input. However, prior to doing this, we need to establish a complete model for water, the key solvent in most electrolyte solutions and possible importance of water structure in electrolyte solutions.

PhD position − Intelligent Production Machines, ETH Zurich

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are considered today to be of crucial relevance for the future of all production machinery and their next large development step in automation technology. Manufacturing technologies are recognised as being extremely complex, which plays an ever-increasing role when the requirements for their results and of manufactured products become more and more strict. Instead of overstraining the capabilities of machine operators, the machine itself has to cope with the complex reality of manufacturing processes. Especially for additive manufacturing technologies, the number of influencing parameters is huge. To increase under all conditions the autonomy of machines, the unsupervised runtime, and to correct faults and uncertainties of the raw material, AI is regarded as the means of choice. This assessment is supported by the awareness that all modeling attempts of processes and machines to predict and control the behaviour are limited in accuracy. The research in this direction is the combination of deterministic modeling with ML and AI, which promises to be the optimal trade-off between data processing technologies and previously gained human knowledge.
The applicant has to have a master degree in Engineering or Physics. The position is coupled with the possibility of a PhD study at ETH Zurich. Qualified candidates should have the following capabilities: (1) Good kowledge of machine tools and manufacturing engineering; (2) Programming expertise, preferably in C/C++; (3) Competences in Information Technology and Machine Control.
