Department of Computer Science, University of Oxford, and Microsoft Research, Cambridge
Research Associate in Reinforcement Learning
http://www.cs.ox.ac.uk/news/1713-full.html

The Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning group at the Department of Computer Science has a vacancy for a Research Associate in Reinforcement Learning. Reporting to Professor Shimon Whiteson and working in close collaboration with Katja Hofmann at Microsoft Research (MSRC), you will be conducting original research in the area of Reinforcement Learning. The position incorporates a one day a week secondment to MSRC, and upon completion of this contract, is expected to be followed by a 6 month stint at MSRC.

The project will focus on developing and analysing state-of-the-art reinforcement learning (RL) methods for application to video games, and aims to tackle two key challenges. Firstly, building effective game AI with RL requires dramatically scaling up existing tools for cooperative multi-agent RL, in which teams of agents must collaborate to complete tasks. Doing so requires new methods for performing multi-agent credit assignment and multi-agent exploration in large state and action spaces. Secondly, effective game AI must also be able to transfer effectively to new scenarios, such as new game levels and versions, without having to learn from scratch. Doing so requires new methods for transfer and meta-learning in RL that scale to the complexity of modern video games.

You will hold a PhD/DPhil (or be close to completion) in Computer Science or related discipline together with relevant experience, and have a strong publication record in machine learning or closely-related area. Experience with reinforcement learning and/or machine learning for gaming is highly desirable.

The closing date for applications is 12 noon on 5 September 2019.

Our staff and students come from all over the world and we proudly promote a friendly and inclusive culture. Diversity is positively encouraged, through diversity groups and champions, for example http://www.cs.ox.ac.uk/aboutus/women-cs-oxford/index.html, as well as a number of family-friendly policies, such as the right to apply for flexible working and support for staff returning from periods of extended absence, for example maternity leave.

Within the scope of the EU-H2020 project DeepField and the Max Planck grassroots project AirCap, a PhD student position is available in the Robot Perception Group (https://ps.is.tuebingen.mpg.de/research_fields/robot-perception-group). The student will be jointly supervised by Dr. Aamir Ahmad and Dr. Michael Black. The start date can be as early as 1st October 2019.

The focus of the Robot Perception Group is on vision-based perception in multirobot systems. To perform a set of perception-driven tasks a team of network-connected robots with vision sensors requires two fundamental functionalities: i) autonomous navigation in the environment and ii) vision-based pose estimation of all static and dynamic objects in the scene. Our research aims to understand how the overall task performance can be maximized within the constraints of communication and computation. To this end, we focus on the following interconnected research threads: i) Multi-robot Active Perception -- We investigate both classical and deep methods for multi-robot formation control based on cooperative target perception without relying on a pre-specified formation geometry, ii) Multi-robot Sensor Fusion -- We study and develop unified methods for sensor fusion that are not only scalable to large environments but also simultaneously to a large number of sensors and teams of robots, and iii) New Robot Platforms -- In order to have extensive access to the hardware, we design and build most of our robotic platforms. Our current flying platforms include 5 Octocopters, 2 quadcopters and a blimp.

The available PhD position is in the area of deep reinforcement learning-based navigation and control of multiple robots in outdoor environments. The candidate is expected to have a background in at least one of the following areas: robot control and state estimation (tracking, localization and navigation) or reinforcement learning. Programming expertise in C/C++, Python and familiarity with ROS, Gazebo and Unreal Engine will be highly appreciated. Candidates with a solid mathematics background including probability and linear algebra will be preferred.

The selected candidate will have a doctoral funding contract for a period of 3 years with a possibility of up to 1 year extension. Salary will be based on the German Tarifvertrag für den Öffentlichen Dienst (TVöD) guidelines. The position is at the Tübingen site of the institute. The position will be open until filled.

The Max Planck society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply. The Max Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals.

Dear Colleagues,

There is a fully funded PhD position open at Idiap Research Institute on
spiking neural architectures for speech prosody.

The research will build on work done recently at Idiap on creating tools for
physiologically plausible modelling of speech. The current "toolbox" contains
rudimentary muscle models and means to drive these using conventional (deep)
neural networks. The main focus of the work will involve use of spiking neural
networks such as the "integrate and fire" type that is broadly representative
of those found in biological systems. Whilst we have focused so far on prosody
(actually intonation), the application is open ended; the focus is on the
neural modelling. A key problem to be solved will be that of training of the
spiking networks, especially with the recurrence that is usual in such
networks. We hope to be able to train and use spiking networks as easily as
conventional backpropagation networks, and to shed light on current
understanding of how biological spiking networks learn (e.g., via spike
timing-dependent plasticity).

For more information, and to apply, please follow this link:
http://www.idiap.ch/education-and-jobs/job-10263

Idiap is located in Martigny in French speaking Switzerland, but functions in
English and hosts many nationalities. PhD students are registered at EPFL. All
positions offer quite generous salaries. Martigny has a distillery and a
micro-brewery and is close to all manner of skiing, hiking and mountain life.

There are other open positions on Idiap's main page
