6 Doctoral Research Positions in Law, Ethics and Economics for Sustainable Development (LEES)
The Universities of Milan, Rijeka and Maastricht are seeking six outstanding and committed students to carry out a three-year multidisciplinary research project, based at more than one participating university (see HERE the call for application and the course website).
The three universities are launching LEES, a new doctoral programme in International and Public Law, Ethics and Economics for Sustainable Development. With courses, seminars and scientific research activities entirely in English, it addresses the complexities involved in sustainable development, and uses an innovative multidisciplinary approach that combines the contributions of law, ethics, and economics. The broad interdisciplinary view that inspires the PhD programme is here attached.
The programme is managed by a highly qualified international doctoral board and supervised by an international scientific council composed by top scholars in the relevant fields of law ethics and economics (see attachment), which will advise the board on the development of research lines and the programme of the yearly international workshops and summer schools.
The first year of the programme will be based in Milan, where the PhD students will attend courses and seminars, and participate in the activities and events of the academic community of the Department. The second and third years will mainly be dedicated to students’ own personal research projects and to participating in the large-scale joint project by working with one of our partner universities, and with the cooperation of their advisors. To enable their participation in the joint project, students will have access to additional funding and will have the opportunity to carry out part of their research either in one of the other leading universities – Rijeka or Maastricht – or in another partner university (see full list attached) depending on the project and the agreements which will be set up. Researchers who choose to work with one of the partner universities will receive, in addition to the joint degree from the three leading universities, a degree from the applicable partner university, as well.

Research Engineer - Machine Learning for Autonomous Driving Behavior: https://smrtr.io/3sqZZ
Hi, everyone.
I’m writing to share the above research position openings, which will be of interest to students, postdocs, etc. doing research on RL or other machine learning for sequential decision making.
I've just begun building an RL/LfD-for-autonomous-vehicles research team for Bosch, the world's largest automotive supplier (with $51B in revenue in 2018), who also happens to make nice home appliances and power tools. Our team has an unusual setup: we office within the UT Austin Computer Science building and are collaborating with Peter Stone, Scott Niekum, and others here. We plan to publish research on RL and LfD topics---where autonomous driving may only be one of many applications of the research results---but we’ll also do R&D that adds algorithms to the Bosch autonomous vehicle program. In the mix are some human-in-the-loop RL research projects as well.
We’re hiring a research engineer and a research scientist to join us here. Intern applications are welcome too. Here’s why I’m grateful to be in this group and why it’s a special opportunity for RL/LfD researchers:
an ability to move between fundamental and applied research
a focus on autonomous vehicles, a high-impact topic with problems spread across the spectrum of application and research
competitive industry pay in an academic setting
Austin (creative culture, natural beauty, and a low cost of living for a tech hub, letting you live like royalty compared your city-poor SF area colleagues who have 2x our cost of living)
Please send any questions to my Bosch email, brad.knox@us.bosch.com.
Best regards,
Brad

PhD position for developing a decision support tool for patients with chronic low back pain
Job denoscription
Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a highly prevalent disease with poorly understood aetiology. The affected population is heterogeneous and the condition multifactorial. This makes it challenging to determine the right treatment. In this project, we will develop a decision support tool to help patients and physicians choose a treatment that is likely to be successful. You will contribute to this decision support tool by developing automatic image analysis methods for assessing degenerative spinal and muscular changes on MRI scans. You will work in close collaboration with clinicians, including orthopedic surgeons and radiologists, and with image analysis and machine learning scientists. You will develop new image analysis tools based on deep learning and similar state-of-the-art technologies.
You will be part of the Radboud AI for Health Lab, in which several PhD candidates are working on artificial intelligence innovations that have a direct impact on clinical care. An important part of this project is therefore also the validation of the methods that you will develop and their translation into the routine diagnostic workup of patients with chronic low back pain. We are collaborating in this project with the Sint Maartenskliniek, a hospital specialized in musculoskeletal disorders in which every year thousands of patients with chronic low back pain are examined and treated.

1-2 Senior Research Fellows, INVEST - DEADLINE 31 October
The University of Turku is a world-class multidisciplinary research university which offers interesting challenges and a unique vantage point to national and international research and education.
The University of Turku is a world-class multidisciplinary research university which offers interesting challenges and a unique vantage point to national and international research and education.
THE FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES, UNIVERSITY OF TURKU INVITES APPLICATIONS FOR THE POSITION OF
1-2 Senior Research Fellows in the research project INVEST for a fixed term position from 1st January 2020 to 31st December 2022.
The INVEST Research Flagship Center (http://invest.utu.fi/), located at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Turku, is recruiting 1-2 Senior Research Fellows (experienced researchers with one or more previous post doc positions). The Flagship Center is located at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Turku.
The research flagship “Inequalities, Interventions, and New Welfare State” (INVEST) aims at providing a new model for the welfare states that is more equal, better targeted to problem groups, more anticipatory as well as economically and socially sustainable. The existing research indicates that the Nordic welfare states are efficient in reducing the negative outcomes that are related to many of the structural family disadvantages, such as parental low education, unemployment or poverty. Despite this, children and youth are still particularly vulnerable when negative life course events take place unexpectedly or when many disadvantages accumulate to the same families. The growth environments can strengthen these negative effects.
The flagship is funded by the Academy of Finland and it is implemented in cooperation with the University of Turku and the Institute of Health and Welfare (THL). The multidisciplinary project combines research teams from sociology, social policy, demography, psychology and psychiatry.
The persons chosen for the positions are placed in the INVEST Sociology research group (https://sites.utu.fi/invest/research-groups/) and are expected to conduct research that is linked to one or more of the following topics: a) socioeconomic and demographic inequalities across the generations and over the life-course, b) the influence of policies and welfare services on these inequalities (comparative approach), and c) social experiments and social interventions. The researchers will support PIs and co-PIs in supervising other researchers, collaborate with other researchers in the program and apply further funding for their own research. The positions are intended for already experienced researchers that are also expected to run their own research groups in the future.
The persons chosen for the positions are expected to have a) a PhD in sociology or in a field related to it and the ability for independent scientific work as well as necessary teaching skills b) strong skills in quantitative methods and experience on using register, panel or comparative datasets, c) experience of conducting independent scholarly work and publishing research on the topics related to the project, and d) previous work experience at least at the post doctoral level in working in high-quality research projects. Own previous research funding, adjunct professorships (docent) and other academic merits are considered as advantages.

Ph.D. Student THE SOCIAL AND COGNITIVE BRAIN
The Free University Brussels (VUB) and the “Ghent Experimental Psychiatry (GHEP) lab” at Ghent University, has a job opportunity for a Ph.D. student in the field of Neuromodulation and Social Neuroscience.
Research project: ‘THE SOCIAL AND COGNITIVE BRAIN’
We offer a dynamic, stimulating and supportive research environment where the Ph.D. candidate will be enrolled in a new line of research with the combination of cerebellar neuromodulation (tDCS/rTMS) and Brain imaging (fMRI).
The social and cognitive brain brings together experts in the field of the study of the social brain and its cognitive underpinnings. The project involves the social cerebellum, a much-neglected part of the brain that seems to be responsible for adequate sequencing of (social) actions, and thus may play an important part in social understanding. To answer fundamental questions on the working of the social cerebellum, we use the most advanced techniques and methods in neuroimaging and neuro-analysis. Moreover, the fundamental insights gained from this fundamental research are applied on patient groups with sequencing deficiencies in social behavior (autism spectrum disorders). Is the cerebellum indeed responsible for these deficiencies, and can these be alleviated by using new technologies at the forefront of brain research: brain stimulation, coupled with novel behavioral / psychological therapies that make effective use of the novel theoretical insights with respect to the cerebellum?
Based on insights on earlier brain imaging findings, the aim of this new project is to develop and test innovative ways to combine cognitive social paradigms in the fMRI scanner while participants are stimulated with tDCS (this in healthy samples as well as in mentally affected patients, focused on autism). This brain imaging information will provide not only crucial information on the working mechanisms of non-invasive neurostimulation in real time, but it will also how it may affect cerebellar social functioning in autism.
Profile/required diploma
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with strong interest in brain processing and psychopathology. Successfully MSc (or equivalent degree graduates) in Medicine, Neuroscience, Engineering/physics, Psychology, or a closely related field, with excellent grades and a strong interest in neuroimaging research.
Extra requirements/ Expected qualifications
- Excellent grades during the Bachelor and Master program
- Capable of working independently at a multidisciplinary level, while engaging in close internal collaborations
- Good knowledge of statistical analysis (SPSS or R) / Data Analysis
- Proficiency in Dutch/English, proficiency in French is an asset
- Being acquainted with neuroimaging (data analyses) or psychophysiology is an advantage but is not mandatory
- Research experience in the field of neuroimaging is an advantage
Applications
Letters of application, including a motivation letter, extensive CV and a copy of certificates mentioning all grades of the separate courses, can be send by email to Prof. Dr. Chris Baeken (Chris.Baeken@uzbrussel.be), before October 30th, 2019. Provide also contact details of two persons who know your academic qualifications and can be contacted for recommendation.
Conditions
The project starts latest January 1st, 2020. It is an assignment for a period of 4 years. First, the selected candidates will get a temporary position for 1 year with the perspective of prolongation for another 3 years. After the first year, there will be an evaluation regarding the prospects of successful completion of the Ph.D. project within the next three years. Salaries conform to standard Belgian regulations.
