Postdoctoral fellow in AI, and real time signal processing for Brain Computer Interface clinical application at CEA, Grenoble and Paris-Saclay, France
The post-doctoral fellowship will be carried out within the frame of the multidisciplinary project “Brain Computer Interface” (BCI) at CEA-LETI-CLINATEC, Grenoble, France, in collaboration with the Data Intelligence Service from CEA-LIST (Paris-Saclay), France. The goal of the BCI project is the proof of concept that it is possible to control complex effectors thanks to brain activity decoding. Motor BCI raises the hope that limb mobility may be restored for severely motor-impaired patients to regain autonomy, providing them with control over orthosis or prostheses.
The project is based on the recording of neuronal activity at the level of cerebral motor cortex (ElectroCorticoGrams, ECoG) with innovative wireless WIMAGINE® implant dedicated to the long term clinical use. A clinical research protocol « BCI and Tetraplegia » at CLINATEC® includes several tetraplegic subjects and is in progress. In this general frame, the project of partners CEA-LETI-CLINATEC and CEA-LIST “Enabling out-of-laboratory neuroprosthetics for severely motor-impaired patients using artificial intelligence”, is supported by Programme Transversal de Compétences « Simulation Numérique » of CEA.
The particular objective of the project is moving toward neuroprosthetics out-of-the-lab applications. This goal entails solving major challenges: increase number of Degrees of Freedom (DoF), improving accuracy and robustness of neural signal decoding to ensure usability of neuroprosthetics for real life tasks from one side, and providing a BCI system for constrained execution environments offered by portable devices from another side. One direction to improve decoding performances is to use recent advances in artificial neural networks. To ensure that the decoding algorithm is compatible with constrained environments, including the restrained CPU and memory costs such that real-time signal processing and decoding remains feasible, various strategies could be investigated.
Missions of post-doctoral fellow will include:
The experiment design and set up for real life tasks of using of neuroprosthesis by tetraplegic subject;
Design of innovative ANN decoding algorithms, the test and the comparison to conventional methods;
Optimization and implementation for real time application, integration to the Clinatec BCI platform;
A unique clinical trial ECoG database supports the project.
Initial contract duration is 12 months with possible prolongation (24 months at max), initial 12 months in CEA / DRT / LETI / CLINATEC, Grenoble and the next ones in CEA / DRT / List / DM2I / SID / LI3A, Saclay.

The position is funded by the UiO:Life Science Initiative, Convergence Environments to the project ”MultiModal Mental Models: converging approaches from genomes to mental illness and interplay with psychosocial stressors (4MENT)”.
The successful candidate will work on model-based exploration of cortical neuron and neural network models, in particular effects of genetic variants on neural functions. The modeling work will be carried out in collaboration with statistical geneticists as well as researchers working with stem cells and brain imaging. The goal of the project is to build models for mental phenotypes that are relevant in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
The candidate will work in the cross-disciplinary environment Center for Integrative Neuroplasticity (cinpla.org), a research center set up by the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Presently, CINPLA includes about twenty biologists, physicists, and computer scientists co-localised in the building of Department of Biosciences at UiO. The candidate will develop and use state-of-the-art computer simulation packages and national supercomputer resources.

Valuable grains R&D output is currently locked away into project reports, communications and scientific publications. This text-based information is not easily discoverable and synthesised. Thus growers are not able to put into practice these valuable insights. This project will develop a conversational agent (AskAg) that will provide personalised access to this valuable information leading directly to better, data-driven growing decisions. Through question-answering systems, AgAsk will elicit and understand growers information needs and preferences, providing contextualised access to insights in Ag R&D.
AgAsk will use state-of-the-art IR, NLP and ML technology to interpret natural language questions. Ag R&D resources will be mined from textual information and converted into a knowledge graph capturing key agricultural concepts and relations (e.g. protozoa --effective_for--> control of pest molluscs). AgAsk will use this knowledge graph to formulate contextualised and interpretable answers to a growers question (e.g. via abstractive summarisation and answer generation).
Our Ideal Candidate
Successful applicants should possess a PhD in the field of Information Retrieval, Natural Language Processing, or Machine Learning on Textual Data.
You should have demonstrated expert knowledge in relevant empirical research methods, including Knowledge Graph creation, question answering, answer generation and ranking, abstractive summarisation, interactive information retrieval, intent understanding, user-based evaluation (evaluation of IR systems with users). Research experience with conversational search and conversational agents, domain-specific search, and task-based retrieval will be beneficial and highly regarded.

Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (AIR) Laboratory at Istanbul Technical University (ITU) announces the availability of a Ph.D. position in Deep Learning for Robotics.
The selected Ph.D. student will carry out research on developing novel neural networks to fuse various sensory data streams, derive semantics and generate policies to predict and prevent failures in the context of robot imitation learning of human manipulation actions. The research will be performed within the PARTNER (*P*redicting *a*nd P*r*eventing Unsafe Si*t* uatio*n*s for S*e*rvice *R*obots) project funded by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK). The project is in close collaboration with Halmstad University (HH) and aims to design and develop an effective system for service robots to predict and prevent unsafe states.
The student will be employed by the AIR Lab at ITU. There is a certain possibility that the student will receive a Ph.D. degree from both universities (i.e. a double degree). The selected Ph.D. student will be placed at the AIR Lab where Assoc. Prof. Sanem Sariel will be the main supervisor and guide the daily work. The PHD work will be in close collaboration with Asst. Prof. Eren Erdal Aksoy as academic supervisor at HH. It is foreseen that shorter periods of time will be spent at HH to perform various robotics experiments.
The selected Ph.D. student will be responsible for conducting research within the PARTNER project and for participating in the required Ph.D.
course activities. The employment also includes teaching responsibilities corresponding to a maximum of 20% of full-time. Applicant will be part of an international workgroup and an English-speaking environment.
This is a full-time position available from January 2020 for a period of three years with a possibility of a further extension, subject to satisfactory progress of the Ph.D. study and funding availability. Enough resources to fund experiments and conference travels are available

The ideal candidate has a Master’s degree in robotics, computer science, machine learning, mathematics, physics, or a related engineering discipline. A strong background in robotics, computer vision, machine learning, or software engineering is desirable.
Excellent programming skills, analytical problem solving and organizational abilities are required. Prior practical experience in ROS and deep learning is a plus.

international competitions on tracking.

This is a fully funded PhD position on AI and Machine Learning at the Centre for Applied Autonomous Sensor Systems (AASS, www.oru.se/aass) at Örebro University (www.oru.se), Sweden. This PhD position is funded by the Wallenberg Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP, wasp-sweden.org), which a Swedish national initiative.
The research topic for this PhD position is to devise and implement new artificial intelligence-based systems to monitor and asses the quality of life of citizens, with main focus on mental well-being. Target populations of this system include elderly people living independently, and people at risk of developing negative mental states (stress, anxiety, and depression), among others.
AI and Machine learning will be used to estimate in real time the mental well-being of people. This includes mood (happiness, sadness, sleepiness, etc), and negative states (stress, anxiety) in order to assess the potential risk for a depression of people during their daily life activities. Assessment will be based on data from different sources including sensors, activity patterns, mental assessment, daily agenda, and so on. New ways of data collection will also be researched. An important question to be answered will be what are the relevant data and the relevant moods when it comes to the assessment of mental well-being.
