Social Media & Learning Islam?

The platform on social media when it comes to learning Islam is weaker than the web of a spider. When it comes to learning Islam, for one who is serious, it takes effort in a number of ways.

1. Either taking on an Islamic degree in a reputable institute live or online if that is not possible.

2. Listening to the audio recordings major scholars of the Sunnah and skipping the watered-down methodology of many of those who are seen as teachers of Islam in the West.

3. Most importantly, learning Arabic so that one can go straight to the sources, that is, the books and the audio recordings of major scholars of the Sunnah (example see alathar.net)

Flip flopping on You Tube videos or FB posts here and there, or learning Islam in a venue of jokes and memes, will not help one in heading in the right direction. Reading comments of keyboard warriors under controversial posts only serves as entertainment and no more.

We should sincerely ask Allāh for guidance in these confusing times and learn from those who were known to be upright and knowledgeable. Social media should be a means to encourage people to learn about Islam, if it becomes a tool for other than this then one should really question his/her presence on these platforms.

Choose your companions wisely

Narrated Abu Musa:

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "The example of a good companion (who sits with you) in comparison with a bad one, is like that of the musk seller and the blacksmith's bellows (or furnace);

from the first you would either buy musk or enjoy its good smell while the bellows would either burn your clothes or your house, or you get a bad nasty smell thereof." [Bukhari 2101]

Hope is a beautiful thing...

It comforts a heart in the midst of chaos...

It calms us down when we have every reason to panic.

Same was the case with Hajar.

She expected help from Allah.

And that's why she ran because it was all she could think of.

We are required to take action - no matter how big or small.

It's Allah who sends us help, from places we can't think of.

You lost your uncle?
He was given the news of his martyrdom in Uhud.

You lost friends?
He saw hundreds of companions leave this world due to war, torture, hunger and illness.

You lost hope due to all the suffering?
He gave hope to the whole of humanity despite the pain. You forgot how to be happy due to the hardship. He was not seen without a smile in order to give others ease.

Hadith on Nifaq: Even hypocrites and evildoers can recite Quran

Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (May ALLAH be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “There will be successors after sixty years who waste the prayer and follow their lusts, so they will soon meet an evil ending (19:59). Then there will be successors who recite the Quran but it does not go beyond their throats. There are three who recite the Quran: a believer, a hypocrite, and an evildoer.”

The story of Uwais Al-Qarni رحمه الله

“The story of Uwais Al-Qarni was mentioned in Sahih Muslim as well as in other books. Now even though he was from the Tabi’een and did not see the Messenger [ صلى الله عليه و سلم], the Messenger [صلى الله عليه و سلم ] had advised Umar ibn Al Khattaab رضي الله عنه that if he meets [Uwais] then he, Umar, should ask [Uwais] to ask Allah to forgive him and to make supplication for him.

Asir ibn Jaabir رضي الله عنه narrated:

Whenever people would come from Yemen, Umar رضي الله عنه would ask them, “Is Uways Al-Qaranee amongst you?” until, one year, he met Uways.

He said, “Are you Uways Al-Qaranee?” He said, “Yes.”

Umar continued, “From Muraad, then Qaran?” He said, “Yes.”

Umar then asked, “Were you once afflicted with leprosy and your skin healed except for a dirham’s area?” Uways said, “Yes.”

Umar finally asked, “Do you have a mother (that is alive)?” He said, “Yes.”

Umar then said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه و say, ‘Uways ibn Aamir will come to you with the delegations from Yemen, from Muraad, then from Qaran. He was once afflicted with leprosy and his skin healed except for a dirham’s area. He has a mother, and he treats her kindly. If he was to ever swear by Allah (for something) Allah would fulfill his oath. If you can, request that he ask forgiveness for you.”

Umar then requested from Uways, “Ask forgiveness for me.” And Uways Al-Qaranee did.

It is invalid to get married while you're in ihram.

According to Imam Maalik, ash-Shaafa'i, Ahmad, and the majority of the Sahaabah and those who followed them, the marriage of a person who is in ihram is invalid.

The prophet (PBUH) said: A Muhrim should neither marry (in that state) nor make the proposal of marriage.' [Muslim 1409d]

However, Abu Haneefah (R) and other Koofi scholars permitted marriage while in Ihram. Their evidence:

Ibn 'Abbas (R) reported: Allah's Messenger. (ﷺ) married Maimuna while he was a Muhrim.' [ 1410b]

Imam Zuhri said: Yazid b. al-Asamm (Allah be pleased with him) told me that he (the Holy Prophet) married her when he was Not a Muhrim."[Muslim 1410a]

When Aban bin Uthman (R) was asked to preside over a wedding, he responded rhetorically as follows:
'I find you a block-headed 'Iraqi. I heard 'Uthman b. 'Affan say that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: A Muhrim should not marry' [Muslim 1409e].

The hadith of Ibn Abbas stating that the prophet married Maymoonah in Ihram has been interpreted as follows:

1. married her after exiting ihram
2. The majority of Sahabas who were knowledgeable about this issue forbade such a marriage, but only Ibn Abbas recorded it.
3. It is possible that what Ibn 'Abbaas meant was that he married her within the Haram boundaries rather than in a condition of ihram.

Ibn 'Abbas (may Allaah Azawajal be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allaah (salalahu alayhi wasaalam) said:

"Allaah’s Hand is with the Jama'ah [1].”

[1] An individual or united minority or majority of the Believers upon the truth.

[Sahih Jami at-Tirmidhi 2166 (Book 33, Hadith 9)]

The Enemy of all Enemies aka Shaytan attacks the isolated sheep…

Abu Darda (may Allaah Azawajal be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allaah Azawajal (salalahu alayhi wasaalam), said:

“If three people in a town or in the desert do not establish prayer among them, then Satan has overcome them. You must establish the congregation, for the wolf eats the isolated sheep.”

[Source: Sunan Abī Dāwūd 547: Grade: Sahih (authentic) according to Al-Nawawi]

The Enemy of all Enemies attacks Believers who leave the safety of the Jama'ah…

Mu’adh ibn Jabal (may Allaah Azawajal be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allaah Azawajal (salalahu alayhi wasaalam), said:

“Verily, Satan is a wolf amongst humanity like the wolf who seizes the sheep wandering and straying from the flock. Beware of the winding mountain paths. You must stay with the wider community.”

[Source: Musnad Ahmad 22107]

Al-Tirmidhi and al-Tabari transmitted from Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah Azawajal be pleased with him), that he reported his father the great Leader of the Believers Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allaah Azawajal be pleased with him) delivered a sermon to the Companions at al-Jabiyah, and he (Umar ibn al-Khattab) said:

“I stand amongst you in the standing place of the Messenger of Allaah (salalahu alayhi wasaalam) amongst us, when he said:

“I bequeath to you my companions, and then those who follow them and then those who follow them, and then lying will spread, until a man will take oath and will not be asked to take oath, and will bear testimony and will not be asked to bear testimony. [Incumbent] on you is the Jama‘ah!

And beware of division! A man must not be in seclusion with a woman, for indeed a man is not secluded with a woman except the third of them is Satan.

SATAN is WITH the (isolated) INDIVIDUAL, and he (Satan) is farther from two [Muslims in each other’s company].

Whoever desires the centre of Jannah, let him adhere to the Jama‘ah. And whoever’s good pleases him and evil displeases him, that is a believer.”

[Sahih Al-Tirmidhi transmitted in his Jami‘ (2165)]

These Ahadith teaches us the importance of unity and working together as a community. They teache us that when we come together, we can achieve great things because Allaah’s Hand is with us to provide support and guidance.

When we are united, our strength multiplies and our goals become easier to reach. We should strive to be unified in our beliefs, words, and actions so that we can benefit from the power of unity.

The Prophet Muhammad (salalahu alayhi wasaalam) was a great example for us in this regard; he always encouraged his followers to come together as one community regardless of their differences or backgrounds so they could work towards common goals for the betterment of all mankind.

He (salalahu alayhi wasaalam) also taught them that when they were unified, they would receive Divine help from Allaah Azawajal which would make their tasks much easier than if they were divided or disunited.

These selected Ahadith serve as an important reminder for all Muslims today to unite upon Orthodoxy/Salafiyyah despite any differences between them so that they may benefit from the power of unity and receive Divine help from Allaah Almighty!

So, will you seek revenge or pardon?

Now listen to what will make it easy for your soul to implement this. Know! You have sins between you and your Lord, and you fear the result of those sins and you hope He will pardon and forgive you. Not only do you want Him to forgive you, you desire that He honors you and gives you good above what you are hoping for. Thus, if you desire this from your Lord despite your sins, then you should deal with the evil of the creation in a similar manner so that Allāh will deal with you like this. The reward is similar to the action. As you deal with the people with their harm towards you, Allāh will deal with you and your sins. So, will you seek revenge or pardon? As you do to others, it will be done to you. You will be treated just like you treat the creation. Whoever ponders this will find it easy to do good towards those who harm him.
