Beautiful Hadith about Sincerity

It was narrated that ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr said: “It was said to the Messenger (ﷺ): ‘Which of the people is best?’ He said: ‘Everyone who is pure of heart and sincere in speech.’ They said: ‘Sincere in speech, we know what this is, but what is pure of heart?’ He said: ‘It is (the heart) that is pious and pure, with no sin, injustice, rancor or envy in it.’”

The Undesirability of Calling Grapes 'Al-Karm'

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "None of you should use the word Al-Karm for grapes, for Al-Karm is a Muslim (worthy of respect).''
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Another narration is: "Verily, Al-Karm is the heart of a true believer.''

Another narration is: "People have named grapes as Al-Karm; verily, only the heart of a believer is Al-Karm.''

We learn from this Hadith that all the derivatives of the word Al-Karm can be used legitimately for Muslims only because a Muslim is Karim. It is, therefore, wrong to call grapes a Karm.

Imam al-Khattabi and others of the 'ulama' said: "The Prophet was concerned lest the beauty of its name should induce them to drink the wine derived from its fruit, and so he divested it of this name. And Allah knows best.,.[Al Nawawi, Al adhkar]

Karrm comes from a root connoting generosity and nobility.

Lack Of Attentiveness In Prayer Can Nullify Its Reward

Prophet Muḥammad Ṣallallāhu-ʿAlaihi Wa Sallam said:

أول ما يرفع من الناس الأمانة وآخر ما يبقى من دينهم الصلاة ورب مصل لا خلاق له عند الله تعالى

“The first thing to be lifted from people (i.e from this Ummah) is TRUST and the last thing to remain of their religion is prayer; and perhaps one will pray but he would have NO PORTION (acceptance or reward) with Allāh Taʿālā.”

A person will see the doors of knowledge swing wide open if they rectify their intentions to sincerely gain this knowledge for Allah's sake alone.

If a person's intention to learn Arabic is to understand the Qur'an in order to bond with it and get closer to Allah, the doors will open. In shaa Allah.

If a person wishes to gain knowledge to get closer to Allah, not for people to praise them, not for the opposite gender to be amazed by them, and not for any worldly gain, the doors of knowledge will swing open.

Why? Because this person is seeking knowledge in order to attain Khashyah (a type of fear and awe of Allah that comes only from having knowledge of Allah).

Allah Says, “It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear Allaah.” (Faatir, 35:28).

The word “khashyah” is used in this verse when referring to fear.

DU'Ā' AGAINST EVILS AND TRAILS

The importance of Du'ā' (supplication) cannot be over-accentuated in Islām. Seeking Allāh's Protection and Guidance is grossly manifested throughout the lifetime of Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ). Verily, he was known to frequently seek Allāh's Protection from various evils and trials, setting a perfect example for Muslims to follow. By emulating him in his prayers and supplications, we (Muslims) find solace regardless of the situation we find ourselves in or the challenges we're going through.

You are welcome to another episode of INSPIRED WORDS from ISLAMAFFAIR CARE FOUNDATION. I am Abu A'ishah, your host this week.

CENTRAL ḤADĪTH

TRANSLATION

Abū Hurayrah reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) would seek refuge in Allāh from the evil of the divine decree, from falling into misery, from the gloating of enemies, and from unbearable trial. [Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6347, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2707]

Firstly, this Ḥadīth indicates the virtues of the Ṣaḥābah (Companions). By Allāh! They are indeed epitomes of merit in preserving and transmitting the knowledge of Islām. Their firm devotion to the Prophet (ﷺ) and their willingness to safeguard his legacy made them the foremost trustworthy narrators of his biography and teachings. In terms of preserving the supplications of Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ), many among the Ṣaḥābah were able to witness, memorize, and transmit them to later generations. Unfortunately, these are the people some acclaimed Muslims attempt to denigrate and speak evil about. May Allāh be ever pleased with all the Companions.

The Central Ḥadīth contains one of the supplications of the Prophet (ﷺ) as narrated by the noble companion, Abū Hurayrah 'AbdurRaḥman Ibn Sakhr (رضي الله عنه). The Prophet (ﷺ) was known to always seek Allāh's Protection from the evil of the Divine Decree because He (ﷺ) mentioned that the Divine Decree (القدر) is either Good or Bad. Thus, since we have no idea of what is written for us, we must seek Allāh's Refuge from evil befalling us while acting righteously against it for good results.

More so, related to the evil of Divine Decree is falling to misery. Misery is a state of intense emotional or psychological distress. It often involves a feeling of hopelessness, depression, sadness, and fear. It may be from various sources such as physical illness, financial instability, relationship problems, or traumatic experiences. The first solution to misery is seeking Allāh's Refuge through supplications and turning to Him for solace and relief. The Prophet (ﷺ) taught us to say: “Allāhumma 'innī 'a'ūdhu bika minal-ḥammi wal-ḥuzn, wal-'ajzi wal-kasal, wal-bukhli wal-jubn, wa ḍala,'id-dayn, wa ghalabatir-rijāl” (O Allāh, I seek refuge with You from worry and grief, and I seek refuge with You from incapacity and laziness, and I seek refuge with You from cowardice and miserliness, and I seek refuge with You from being heavily in debt and from being overcome by men). [Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6369]

Furthermore, seeking Allāh's Protection against the gloating of enemies was also a common practice of Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ). Gloating of enemies happens when they rejoice or express triumph in one's suffering and misfortune. This kind of experience can cause spiritual weakness and emotional pain in the life of a Muslim. Thus, we must constantly seek refuge from the harm of malicious individuals and evil forces.

Lastly, in the Central Ḥadīth is seeking refuge from unbearable trials such as knowledge that does not benefit, a heart that is not submissive, wealth that makes one deviate from Allāh's Path, having disobedient children, etc. Dear respected brethren! Let's memorize and always say this Du'ā' as contained in Central Ḥadīth: Allāhumma innī 'a'ūdhu bika min sū'il-qadā'i wa-min darakish-shaqā'i wa-min shamātati al-a'idā'i wa-min jahdibal-balā'.

During his final illness, Abu Hurayrah رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ wept, and when asked why, he replied, “I do not cry for this worldly life of yours. Rather, I weep because of the long journey I am about to embark on, with so little provision [i.e., good deeds]. Now I stand at a steep ascent, and its end will be either in Paradise or Hell. And I do not know to which of the two I will be taken.”

Remember, the Muslims are those who rely solely on Allāh as they ceaselessly and humbly supplicate to Him. They don't abandon invoking Him, nor rather command Him or shout His Names. Allāh says: “Invoke your Lord with humility and in secret. He likes not the aggressors.” [Sūrah Al-A'raf (7): 55]

Finally, this episode highlights the importance of seeking protection from various evils and trials through supplications. Specifically, we've learned a supplication to seek Allāh's Protection from the evil of divine decree, misery, gloating of enemies, and unbearable trial. May Allāh make it easy for us to constantly turn to Him for guidance and protection at all times. Aameen

Learn silence for it is a beneficial skill and a fruitful path [to take].
It is not necessary that you have an opinion regarding every issue, nor that you have a statement regarding every affair, rather listening and enjoying is enough for you.

Some silence is stronger and sweeter than speech,
And the hardest of silence is that which opposes your desire for being seen and demonstrating your knowledge;
The Prophet ﷺ said in the hadith: "He who remained silent has been saved."

We have so many da'ees and duaat speaking about how it's okay to cry and complain while having sabr.

I would like to remind everyone that there is a also a different level of sabr where you feel okay not crying, where you feel okay not complaining and just accepting decree of Allah no matter how hard it is on your soul and being.

Many people deal with grief in silence on their own. They don't need to talk, they don't need to cry infront of others, they don't need to shout and scream, they don't need hugs and they don't need to rehash the loss.

❝The one who has patience is the one who has trained himself to handle difficulties.❞
- Abu Uthman

❝Patience means to keep close to Allah and to accept calmly the trails He sends, without complaining or feeling sad.❞
- Amr ibn Uthman al-Makki

All they need is alone time and all the need is more time reciting Quran, more time learning seerah, more time spending time with family.

❝Patience means to seek Allah's help.❞
- Ali ibn Abi Talib (ra)

❝Patience means to adhere to the rules of the Quran and Sunnah.❞
- Al - Khawwas
[Ibn Qayyum Al-Jawziyyah, Patience & Gratitude]

While we normalize crying and complaining whilst having sabr let's also normalize not talking and being alone while facing a hardship.

Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله:
❝Panicking does not make the calamity go away. In fact, panicking makes the calamity more difficult.❞
[Zaad al-maad 4/189]

These Muslims are not emotionless and they have not hardened up. They have a different way of dealing with trials and calamities. They would rather make dua than talk to people, they would rather give charity, rather spend time reflecting over Quran.

🤲 May Allah grant us beautiful patience at the first strike of calamity and make it an expiation for our major and minor sins - Allahumma ameen!

❝Patience is that the heart does not feel anger towards that which is destined and that the mouth does not complain.❞

"O brothers, the years are like phases, the months are like miles, the days are like yards, and breaths are like footsteps; good deeds are like your capital wealth and sins are like highway robbers; Paradise is like the profit earned from the journey, and Hellfire is the loss. For this reason, the pious make good use of all the time they have, trading good deeds at the marketplace of worship and therefore abandoning worldly pleasures."
