Al-Fawzan on Worrying about Future Provision and Means of Living

Wed 05 Nov, 2014 by Owais Al-Hashimi
Noble Shaykh, may Allāh give you success, the questioner says: I take care of my five daily prayers, doing them on time, and I regularly recite the Qurān and fast the supererogatory fasts, and all praise is for Allāh. But sometimes I am afflicted with fear about the future as it pertains to provision and means of living, for me and for my children, especially in recent times. This has caused me worry, sadness and confusion. What is your guidance for me regarding these things?

[00:00:34]

The Shaykh responded:

This is from Shayṭān, you must seek refuge with Allāh from this, if you feel this, you seek refuge with Allāh from this, and have a good opinion of Allāh, and rely on Him (by entrusting your affairs to Him). Allāh will make things easy as He wills.

Ibn Rajab Rahimahullah:

"How often are the verses of the Qur'an recited to us, yet our hearts remain like stones or even harder?

How many Ramadans pass over us, and our condition in them resembles that of the wretched?

The youth among us do not abandon their reckless desires, nor do the elders refrain from disgraceful deeds to join the ranks of the righteous."

WHEN GOOD PEOPLE SPEAK WELL OF YOU AFTER YOUR DEATH

Anas bin Malik narrated that a funeral procession passed and the people praised the deceased. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "It has been affirmed for him."

Then another funeral procession passed and the people spoke badly of the deceased. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "It has been affirmed for him".

‘Umar bin Al-Khattab asked, "What has been affirmed?" He replied, "You praised this one so Paradise has been affirmed for him — and you spoke badly of that one, so Hell has been affirmed for him. You people are Allah's witnesses on earth.

(Al-Bukhāri no. 1367)

‘Umar narrated a version in which Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said:

“If four (righteous) people testify to the piety of a Muslim, Allah will grant him Paradise."

We asked, "If three persons testify his piety?" He (the Prophet) replied, "Even three."

Then we asked, "What about two?" He replied, "Even two." We did not ask him regarding one witness.

How Many Recite The Book Of Allaah

Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen [رحمه الله] said:

❝So many people recite the Book of Allaah Ta’ala. However, they recite it in wording and correctly recite its letters but they do not recite its meaning. They do not establish its Shari’a.

If you reflected upon the condition of the Islamic world today, you would find that most of the Islamic world are upon correctly reciting the letters, rather than establishing the meaning and the Shari’a.❞

The believer awaits Ramaḍān like he awaits someone dear who has gone missing; he becomes concerned at its absence, worrying that he may not see it again, and becomes concerned at his deeds if he does see it.

“O Allah, deliver us to Ramaḍān, deliver Ramaḍān to us, and receive it from us having accepted it!”

‼️ALL THAT OCCURS TO MANKIND IS BY ALLĀH'S PERMISSION‼️

ALLĀH informs us as HE did in Surah Al-Hadid,

No calamity occurs on the earth or in yourselves but it is inscribed in a record before WE bring it into existence. Verily, that is easy for ALLĀH. (57:22)

ALLĀH said here,

*مَا أَصَابَ مِن مُّصِيبَةٍ إِلاَّ بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ*
No calamity occurs, but by the permission of ALLĀH,

Ibn Abbas said; "By the command of ALLĀH," meaning from HIS decree and will.

*وَمَن يُوْمِن بِاللَّهِ يَهْدِ قَلْبَهُ وَاللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمٌ*
and whosoever believes in ALLĀH, HE will guide his heart. And ALLĀH is the All-Knower of everything.

Meaning, whoever suffered an affliction and he knew that it occurred by ALLĀH'S judgement and decree, and he patiently abides, awaiting ALLĀH'S reward, then ALLĀH guides his heart, and will compensate him for his loss in this life by granting guidance to his heart and certainty in faith. ALLĀH will replace whatever he lost for HIM with the same or what is better.

Ali bin Abi Talhah reported from Ibn `Abbas,

*وَمَن يُوْمِن بِاللَّهِ يَهْدِ قَلْبَهُ*
and whosoever believes in ALLĀH, HE will guide his heart

"ALLĀH will guide his heart to certainty. Therefore, he will know that what reached him would not have missed him and what has missed him would not have reached him."

There is an agreed upon Hadith that Al-Bukhari and Muslim collected and which states,

"Amazing is the believer: There is no decree that ALLĀH writes for him, but is better for him.

- If an affliction strikes him, he is patient and this is better for him.

- If a bounty is granted to him, he is thankful and this is better for him.

This trait is only for the faithful believer."

Diseases of the Heart and Their Cures

When we look at the diseases of the heart, we realise how destructive they can be—not just to ourselves but to our relationships and, most importantly, our connection with Allah. It’s a journey of reflection and treatment, one that requires sincerity, devotion, and constant awareness of Allah.

Arrogance and Conceit
Arrogance stems from egotism, an overestimation of oneself, and a false sense of superiority. The best remedy is to cultivate humility—to remind ourselves constantly that we are nothing but slaves of Allah. We come from dust, and to dust, we shall return. True greatness belongs only to Allah, Al-Kabir, the Most Great.

Ostentation (Hidden Idolatry)
Showing off and seeking praise from others can quietly creep into our intentions, corrupting even our acts of worship. The cure is to check our intentions before any action. Ask yourself: “Am I doing this for Allah alone, or to be seen by others?” Renew your intention often and remember that Allah is the All-Seeing, the All-Knowing.

Jealousy, Envy, Hate, and Deceit
These feelings eat away at the heart and poison the soul. The treatment lies in transforming jealousy into positive envy—competing with others in goodness. Instead of resenting someone’s blessings, let it inspire you to strive harder for Allah’s pleasure. Make dua for the person you envy and ask Allah to bless you with contentment.

Suspicion
Suspicion arises from a lack of trust and confidence in others. While it’s wise to be cautious, too much suspicion can damage relationships and harden the heart. If we want to be trusted, we must also learn to trust others. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Avoid suspicion, for suspicion is the most false of speech.”

Anger
Anger is a natural defense mechanism, but when left unchecked, it destroys both the heart and the mind. The Prophet ﷺ taught us practical steps to cool anger:
Change your position (sit if you’re standing, lie down if you’re sitting).
Change your environment.
Drink water.
Seek refuge in Allah from Shaytan.
Imam Ghazali beautifully reminds us: “The love of Allah extinguishes the fire of anger.” Reflecting on Allah’s mercy and seeking His calmness will soften even the hardest hearts.

Stinginess
Stinginess stems from selfishness, materialism, and an unhealthy attachment to the dunya. The Prophet ﷺ taught us to seek refuge in Allah from this disease. He warned: “Beware of stinginess. It destroyed those before you; it led them to shed blood and violate sacred bonds.” The cure lies in generosity—giving for the sake of Allah and detaching from the love of worldly possessions.

Love of the World (Jah)
The extreme desire for wealth, power, fame, and status—this is the love of the dunya. It’s a dangerous disease because it distracts us from our ultimate purpose. The world is a fitnah (a test and a trial), and the hereafter is our real home. The cure is to constantly remind ourselves of this reality: "What is with you will end, but what is with Allah will last.” (16:96)

The Path to Healing
All these cures require a deep and sincere devotion to Allah. It starts with:

Regular prayers to keep our hearts grounded.
Reciting and reflecting on the Qur’an to nourish our souls.

Surrounding ourselves with good company—those who inspire us to be better, remind us of Allah, and walk the path of righteousness alongside us.

This journey is not about perfection but about progress, sincerity, and effort. Allah sees every step we take, and He comes closer to us when we strive to purify our hearts.

May Allah grant us hearts that are sound, humble, and free from diseases. May He fill them with His love, light, and remembrance. Ameen.

Ramadhan and the Sons of Ya’qub

Al-Imam ibnul Jawzi, may Allah have mercy on him, wrote the following beautiful words in Bustān al-Wā’idheen:

“It is said that the 12 months are like the sons of Ya’qub, upon him and his sons be the peace of Allah, and Ramadhan amongst the months is like Yusuf among his brothers. So, just as Yusuf was the most beloved of the sons to Ya’qub, likewise Ramadhan is the most beloved of months to A’lām al-Ghuyūb (the Knower of the Unseen, Allah تبارك و تعالى)”
