Meeting Yusuf عليه السلام This Morning at Fajr
This morning, I arrived at the Islamic Center of Irvine for Fajr. I hadn’t slept well. My night had been long, thoughtful, and heavy—a private journey of the soul that left me inwardly quiet and deeply introspective.
I was hoping to pray behind our dear Sheikh Mohamed Osman, whose voice often lifts the heart. But today, a volunteer—brother Yousuf—stepped forward to lead. And then… he recited none other than Surat Yusuf عليه السلام.
And I thought, SubhānAllāh.
That Surah had been orbiting my thoughts all night. Its wisdom. Its sorrow. Its unmatched cinematic, immersive and majestic storytelling. I hadn’t even spoken it aloud. But there it was, waiting for me at Fajr—as if it knew.
Some scholars say Surat Yusuf عليه السلام was revealed all at once—a unique feature of its divine design. And it came in the Prophet’s ‘Aam al-Huzn, the Year of Sorrow, after losing both his greatest emotional support—Khadijah—and his greatest public protector—Abu Talib.
And Allāh responds to his grief not with a command, not with a legal ruling, but with a story. A masterpiece.
- The betrayal of family.
- The pain of false hope.
- The burden of being blamed for righteousness.
- The injustice of prison.
- The silence of years.
- And then—mercy, clarity, reunion, reform.
Yusuf عليه السلام walks through fire and emerges not bitter—but radiant. He forgives his betrayers. He lifts a nation. He becomes the healing for a society that once forgot his pain.
And as I stood this morning, immersed in the quiet sanctity of Fajr, I realized...
This wasn’t just a recitation. It was a response.
The Qur’an always speaks—but sometimes, it meets you where you are.
Sometimes, it mirrors what you couldn't put into words.
This morning, I met Yusuf عليه السلام.
And in his story—I found my silence spoken, my burden honored, and my heart held.
📿 May we all find moments like these... when the Qur’an doesn't just guide us, but walks with us.

Abû Hurayrah narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:

Information related to Udhiyah (Qurbaani)
🐐🐑🐪
🔹One sacrifice (a goat or sheep) is enough on behalf of the head of the household, his wife, kids and family living under his roof.
You do not have to offer sacrifice for each member of the family.
Shaykh ibn ‘Uthaymeen said:
“Udhiyah is Sunnah mu’akkadah for the one who is able to do it, so a person should offer the sacrifice on behalf of himself and the members of his household.” (Fataawa Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, 2/661)
But if someone wants to offer more than one sacrifice per family, that’s allowed.
And counts as extra rewards.
🔹You can offer this one udhiyah on behalf of all members of your family, both living and even the dead.
The Prophet ﷺ used to offer the udhiyah on behalf of himself and on behalf of the members of his family, including those who had previously died, for example Khadeejah radhi Allaahu anhaa.
The Prophet ﷺ brought a ram and said:
“In the name of Allaah; O Allaah, accept (this sacrifice) on behalf of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad and the ummah of Muhammad.” Then he sacrificed it.” (Saheeh Muslim 3637)
🔹 How to divide the Udhiyah
It's good to eat ‘some’ from the udhiyah (qurbaani) and give ‘some’ as charity.
Allaah said:
“Then eat thereof and feed therewith the poor having a hard time” [al-Hajj 22:28]
And the Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam said about the udhiyah:
“Eat some, store some and give some in charity.” (Muslim)
It’s recommended to divide it in three (3) parts. And keep a third for yourself, give a third to the poor, and a third to your family.
But that’s not a hard and fast rule.
The scholars said:
“The division of the udhiyah into three portions was narrated from some of the Sahaabah radhi Allaahu anhum, but the matter is broad in scope.
What matters is that “some” of it should reach the poor and needy.” (Islamqa Fatwa # 160055)
🔹 If you're the one offering the udhiyah, you should not cut your nails or hair starting from the first of dhul hijjah until the time you do the sacrifice.
The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam said:
“When you see the new moon of Dhu’l-Hijjah, and one of you wants to offer a sacrifice, let him refrain from (removing anything) from his hair or nails.” (Muslim, 1977)
According to another version: “Let him not remove anything of his hair or skin.”
🔹This ruling is only for the one doing the sacrifice.
Your family and the others that you're doing the sacrifice on behalf of, do not have to do that.
They can cut their nails and hair if they need to.
The reason why cutting the nails and hair is not allowed is to show unity, support and solidarity between the hujjaaj and those that are not going for hajj.
Shaikh Ibn Baaz said:
“This ruling applies only to the one who is going to slaughter the sacrifice.
It does not apply to the one on whose behalf a sacrifice is offered, because the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam said, “If any one of you wants to offer a sacrifice.” He did not say, “… is going to have a sacrifice offered on his behalf.”
And the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam used to offer the sacrifice on behalf of the members of his household, and it is not narrated that he told them to refrain from that (cutting their hair and nails etc).
Based on this, it is permissible for the family of the person who is going to offer the sacrifice to remove things from their hair, nails and skin during the first ten days of Dhu’l-Hijjah.” (Fataawa Islamiyyah, 2/316)
🔹 It's not correct to offer udhiyah on behalf of the Prophet ﷺ.
The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam never taught us to do that although he Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam taught us everything we need as far as doing good deeds is concerned.
Also the Sahaabah never sacrificed an udhiyah on behalf of the Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam.
If it was good to do that, they would have definitely done that. But they didn't.
Besides whatever good we do, the Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam automatically gets the reward of it too.
That's because he ﷺ said:

When no one sees your efforts...
You may pray, strive, and stay firm in private—and feel unseen.
But Allāh sees it all
The youths of the cave fled for His sake, and Allāh preserved their story forever in the Qur’an. You don’t need applause. You need the pleasure of your Lord. “So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it.” [Qur’an 99:7]
Keep doing good. Nothing done for Allāh is ever wasted.

🌓 *Start of Dhul-Ḥijjah Tonight!*
The blessed month of Dhul-Ḥijjah will begin tonight at Maghrib. *This means that the Day of ʿArafah will fall on Thursday 5th June, and ʿEid al-Aḍḥā will be on Friday 6th June, in shāʾ Allāh.*
As we enter these virtuous 10 days, it is important to be aware of some key rulings and recommended acts of worship. Below are five important rulings related to the first ten days of Dhul-Ḥijjah:
1️⃣ *The Virtue of the First Ten Days of Dhul-Ḥijjah:*
The first ten days of Dhul-Ḥijjah are among the best days of the year. In fact, some scholars, such as Ibn Rajab al-Ḥanbalī, held the view that they are even superior to the last ten nights of Ramaḍān — based on the generality of the ḥadīth reported by Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allāh be pleased with him and his father), in which the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allāh than these days.”
They said: “Not even jihād for the sake of Allāh?”
He replied: “Not even jihād — except for a man who goes out risking his life and wealth and returns with nothing.”
[Reported by al-Bukhārī]
Due to this, it is recommended to fast during these days, to give abundant charity, and to engage in voluntary acts of worship — such as night prayer (Qiyām al-Layl), regular Sunnah prayers, and the like.
2️⃣ *Increasing the Pronouncement of Takbīr Aloud:*
It is encouraged to frequently proclaim the Takbīr aloud during these ten days, whether going out or returning home, in one’s house and elsewhere.
Al-Bukhārī mentioned that Ibn ʿUmar and Abū Hurayrah would go out to the marketplace during the ten days and raise their voices in Takbīr, prompting the people to follow them in doing so.
It has been authentically reported by Ibn Abī Shaybah that Ibn Masʿūd and his companions would say:
*“Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, Lā ilāha illa Allāh;*
*Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, wa lillāhil-ḥamd.”*
*3️⃣ Fasting the Day of ʿArafah:*
The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) stated that fasting on the Day of ʿArafah expiates the sins of two years. He (ﷺ) said:
“It expiates the previous year and the following year.”
[Reported by Muslim]
*4️⃣ The Uḍḥiyah (Sacrificial Offering):*
One of the most virtuous acts of drawing closer to Allāh during this period is the slaughtering of a sacrificial animal. The shedding of blood and the sacrifice of life for the sake of Allāh is greatly emphasised.
It is preferable to perform the sacrifice within the household so that the ritual is observed and its significance is upheld. Moreover, one should eat from it, as Allāh says:
“So eat from them [the sacrificial animals].” [Sūrah al-Ḥajj: 28]
*5️⃣ The ʿEid Prayer:*
Everyone — men and women alike — should strive to attend the ʿEid prayer.
Umm ʿAṭiyyah (may Allāh be pleased with her) said:
“We were instructed to go out on the day of ʿEid, even the young girls and the women in seclusion (menses). The menstruating women would stand behind the congregation, proclaiming the Takbīr along with the rest and supplicating in hope of the blessings and purification of that day.”
