RULING UPON THE ONE WHO ATTENDS A “PROPHET’S BIRTHDAY” EVENT OR PARTY – IBN BAZ رحمه الله

The time of year is upon us where those with a restricted share of knowledge from the Qur’an and Sunnah, upon the methodology of the Salaf of this Ummah, find themselves engaged in acts of “love” for the prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم – and yet in reality they are barren and void of any true love. They find themselves conducting marches, food festivals and other affairs claiming guidance within their activities, and in reality no revelation ever descended upon its validity.
Shaikh bin Baz رحمه الله was asked the following, “What is the ruling on the “prophet’s birthday”? And what is the ruling upon the one who attends it? And is the one who does it and dies upon that state [not having repented] punished?”
Regarding birthdays, then there is nothing in the legislation that indicates they should be celebrated, neither the “birthday” of the prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم or other than him. That which we know from the pure legislation and what the people of knowledge have established is that celebrating birthdays is an innovation – there is no doubt in that. Since the prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم who was the greatest in his advice to the people, and the most knowledgable regarding the legislation of Allah and the one who preached and spread it, did not celebrate his “birthday” and nor did the companions, neither Abu Bakr, Umar, ‘Uthman, ‘Ali رضي الله عنهم or other than them.
So if this was correct and a sunnah they would have hastened to doing it, and the prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم himself would not have left it, rather he would have done it himself صلى الله عليه و سلم and taught us to do it, and the companions would have done it…but since they all left it and did not do it, then we know with certainty this is not from the legislation. Similarly the righteous Salaf did not do it, and so it becomes clear this is an innovation and indeed the prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said translated, “Whomsoever introduces something into our religion that which is not from it will have it rejected”.
Therefore celebration of the “prophet’s birthday” in Rabee’ ul-Awwal [an islamic month] or in other months [since it is not established the exact date!], similarly other celebrations such as birthdays of al-Badawy or of al-Husain – all are reviled innovations and it is upon the people of Islam to abandon them. Instead Allah سبحانه و تعالى has bestowed upon us ‘Eid ul-Fitr and ‘Eid ul-Adha as the days of legislated celebration.
It is not a demonstration of love to the prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم in celebrating the “birthday”, rather the true love of the prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم necessitates following him and clinging to his Sunnah, and defending it, and calling to it, and being upright upon it…this is the true love, as Allah سبحانه و تعالى stated in Surah Ale ‘Imran: 31, the meaning of which is, “Say (O Muhammad SAW to mankind): “If you (really) love Allah then follow me (i.e. accept Islamic Monotheism, follow the Quran and the Sunnah), Allah will love you and forgive you of your sins. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
As for the individual being punished or not [the one who participates and dies upon that state], then that affair is with Allah. However, innovations and sins are from the means that lead to punishment, so a person may be punished due to his sin or he may be pardoned by Allah, the individual is under the command of Allah”.

🚩A timely response to those misguided people who innovate into the pure religion of Allāh and form celebrations of the birthday (or what they claim is the birthday) of the Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)

⏳THE YEAR OF HIS NOBLE BIRTH
According to the most correct opinion of the scholars, the Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was born in the city of Makkah in the Year of the Elephant (in the year 570 or 571 CE), in the month of Rabīʿ‘ul Awwal. [1]
⏳THE DAY OF HIS NOBLE BIRTH
There is an agreement amongst the scholars that the Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was born on a Monday, and he said: "On that day I was born and on that day Revelation descended upon me." [2] However, as regards to the exact date of his birth, then the scholars have differed about this, although many scholars say he was born on the 12th of Rabīʿul Awwal.
Imām al-Nawawī (d. 676H) - raḥimahullāh - said:
"There is an agreement that he was born on a Monday in Rabīʿ‘ul Awwal. There is a difference of opinion whether that day was the 2nd, 8th, 10th, or 12th of the month - and these are the four most well known opinions concerning this." [3]
⏳EVENTS AT THE TIME OF HIS NOBLE BIRTH
Certain miraculous events are reported to have occurred at the time when the Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was born. However, most of them are not authentically related, rather they are da‘eef (weak) or mawdoo‘ (fabricated) and therefore cannot be relied upon as decisive proof; such as the narration which states that some of the galleries of Kisraa's palace broke up and collapsed, that the sacred fire of the Magians died out, and that some of the churches on Lake Saawah collapsed and sank down. [4] However, it is authentically related that the Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "I am a result of the supplication of my father Ibrāhīm and the glad tiding brought by ʿĪsá (ʿalayhimus salām). And my mother - when she bore me - saw a light shone out from her, which lit up the palaces in Syria…" [5]
⏳CELEBRATING THE DAY OF HIS NOBLE BIRTH
Imām al-Faakihaanee (d. 734H) - raḥimahullāh - said: [6]
"Celebrating the Mawlid has no basis in the Book or the Sunnah, nor is this action recorded from any of the scholars of this Ummah; those who are taken as Imāms to be followed and who adhere to the narrations. Rather it is an innovation which was introduced by the Battaaloon sect." [7]
As regards to the origin of this newly invented celebration, then some of the researching scholars have stated that the first person to innovate this practice was ʿUmar Ibn Muḥammad al-Mulā in the city of Mawsil in ʿIrāq, during the fourth century as is mentioned by Imām Abū Shāmah (d. 665H). [8] He was followed in his day by the likes of Abū al-Khaṭṭāb ʿUmar Ibn Dihyaa: "who was employed in the west, then traveled to Syria, then he traveled to the city of Irbil in ʿIrān, during the fourth century, where he founds its king, Mudthaffarud-Dīn Ibn Zaynud Dīn showing a keen interest in the milād (birthday) of the Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). So he composed a book for him called 'at-Tanweer Fee Mawlidis Siraajil Muneer'; so he recited this to the king who then awarded him with one thousand dīnārs." [9]
Imām Mālik (d.179H) - raḥimahullāh - said:
"Whosoever introduces into Islām an innovation, and holds it to be something good, has indeed alleged that Muḥammad (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) has betrayed his message. Read the statement of Allāh - the Most Blessed, the Most High:
"This day I have perfected your Religion for you, completed my favour upon you and I have chosen for you Islām as your Religion." [Sūrah al-Maa’idah, 5:3]
So that which was not part of the Religion at that time, cannot be part of the Religion today. And the last part of this ummah cannot be rectified, except ⬇

Thus, had the practice of celebrating milādun-nabee (the birthday of the prophet) been something praiseworthy, then: "The salaf - may Allāh be pleased with them - would have instituted it. For they were the ones having the greatest honour and love or the Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and a greater zeal for doing good. Indeed, the most perfect expression of love and honour for him is by following him, obeying him, carrying out his commands, upholding and reviving his Sunnah - both inwardly and outwardly - and spreading his massage and striving in this with the heart and the hand and the tongue. Such was the path of the Companions and those who followed them in goodness." [11]

There are about 1.7 billion Muslims on the face of this earth...
but the correct Islam will be followed by few!
Regarding the majority of the people who ascribe to Islam today:
Shaykh Saalih al-Fowzaan (may Allah preserve him) said:
“When we look to the Muslim world, we do not see any serious commitment to Islam with most of those who ascribe to it, except the few that Allah has had Mercy on. They are (mostly) Muslims by name only, the aqeedah of most of them is lost. They worship other than Allah, calling on saints and righteous people, clinging to graves and tombs, not establishing the prayer, not paying zakat, not fasting, etc. They are not fulfilling the basic obligations Allah asked of them, nor are they even preparing physically to engage in combat against the disbelievers! This is the case with the majority of those who ascribe themselves to Islam – they have lost their religion, so Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, caused them to be lost.”

Reciting on water and pouring on a afflicted person suffering from jinn/black magic
THE EVIDENCE FOR READING ON WATER.:
There is nothing wrong with reciting over water or olive oil to treat the sick person, the one on whom a spell has been cast or the one who is insane, but reciting over the patient and blowing over him is better and preferable.
Abu Dawood (may Allaah have mercy on him) narrated with a hasan isnaad that the Prophet (sall Allahu alayhi wasallam - peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) recited over water for Thaabit ibn Qays ibn Shammaas and poured it over him.
This saheeh hadeeth is general in meaning and includes ruqyah recited over the patient himself and ruqyah recited over water and olive oil etc.
And Allaah is the Source of strength. End quote.

SOULS WHO GET ALONG WITH EACH OTHER
Have you noticed when you meet a particular brother or sister for the first time, you get along with them instantly. You agree on most things, you feel comfortable in their presence and most importantly you talk to them as if you have known them for years. You even express yourself in a way that would take you months or even years with other people. You don't hold back what you want to say and can express yourself freely in their presence.
After meeting them a few times you have a firm attachment to them and proudly proclaim them to be your brother or sister. The Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi wasallam) described why this happens.
A'isha (Radi Allahu anha) narrated that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi wasallam) said: “Souls are troops collected together and those who got along with one another (in the realm where souls existed before entering physical bodies in this world) will have an affinity with one another and get along (in this world)."
(Bukhari, 3158; Muslim, 2638)
So the brothers and sisters that you love and cherish in this world are with you for a reason. You were joined together before you were born and you exist in harmony together as brothers in this world as a result of that attachment.
Al-Khattabi states that people are attracted to those who are like them and people’s souls recognise one another according to their nature. If they are similar they will get along and if they are different they will not get along.
Finally this sums things up. Ibn Hibbaan narrated: "Ibn Abbas saw a man and said, ‘Indeed he loves me.’ His companions asked, ‘And how do you know?’ He said, ‘Because I love him and souls are like recruited soldiers, those that recognise one another unite in harmony and those that do not recognise one another are at an aversion.’
(Rawdah Al-Uqalaa, 1/108).
May Allah bless our brothers and sisters and may we all meet in the gardens of Jannah under the Shade of Allah. Aameen.

Ibn Hibbaan narrated: "Ibn Abbas saw a man and said, ‘Indeed he loves me.’ His companions asked, ‘And how do you know?’ He said, ‘Because I love him and souls are like recruited soldiers, those that recognise one another unite in harmony and those that do not recognise one another are at an aversion.’

“By Allah! The reference in this Ayah is to singing.”
He would swear and say:
“Singing causes the seeds of hypocrisy to grow in the heart like water causes seeds of plants to grow.”⭕
This means that singing causes one to hate good and to love evil; to hate listening to the Qur’an and to love songs and diversion and other things of the sort. This is a type of hypocrisy.
A hypocrite pretends to be associated with Islam.
He pretends to be a believer while in fact he conceals Kufr. He pretends to love the Qur’an while in fact he does not.
Music causes one to hate listening to the Qur’an or listening to someone calling to the way of Allah.
It encourages the love of falsehood, speaking evil and obscene words.
It not only causes the heart to deviate from the straight path but also to develop a fondness for what Allah (Glorified be He) has declared prohibited.
💢This has been proven by experience. Those who are in close contact with singers know how corrupt and spoiled they are because of their love of music and song.
This brings about great evil to those who are accustomed to it. There is no power or might except with Allah.

Advising women who listen to music

🔵: Kindly advise those women who listen to songs.
I advise all men and women not to listen to music, because they bring about evil consequences.
Songs are presented on TV, broadcast on the radio, and recorded on cassettes. All Muslim men and women are thus required to beware the evil of these songs. Instead, they should listen to the Qur’an, Hadiths of the Prophet (peace be upon him) or Islamic lectures which benefit them in this life and the Hereafter.
💢As for songs and music, their evil is great as they may cause Muslims to deviate from their religion.
💢Songs and music may sow seeds of hypocrisy in the heart, at which point one begins to develop a dislike for everything that is good and become fond of every other thing that is evil. This is the true meaning of hypocrisy in addition to its literal meaning of pretending to be a Muslim while concealing Kufr (disbelief). Therefore, music is one of the means that invites to hypocrisy.
💢Having the habit of listening to music may lead to hating the recitation of the Qur’an, being heedless of beneficial advice, or listening to Hadiths of the Prophet (peace be upon him).
💢Moreover, one may be deluded into committing obscenities and corruption.
Thus, it is the duty of faithful men and women to be cautious of evil of songs and music.
💎Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) states in the Glorious Qur’an:
And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing, etc.) to mislead (men) from the Path of Allâh without knowledge, and takes it (the Path of Allâh, or the Verses of the Qur’ân) by way of mockery. For such there will be a humiliating torment (in the Hell-fire).(Surah Luqman, 31: 6)💎
💎And when Our Verses (of the Qur’ân) are recited to such a one, he turns away in pride, as if he heard them not – as if there were deafness in his ear. So announce to him a painful torment. (Surah Luqman, 31: 7)💎
Commentators of the Qur’an interpret “idol talk” to mean singing and it is equally applied to every sound produced by musical instruments and diversions. This is the view held by most scholars of the Qur’an (may Allah have mercy on them).
📚Commenting on the above Ayah (Qur’anic verse),Abdullah Ibn Mas`ud (may Allah be pleased with him) swore:“By Allah! The reference in this Ayah is to singing.”

(5) From a desire that nullifies purity and sincerity (in intent and purpose)

- a man who does not feel the desire to commit a sin and does not commit it, or
- a man who feels desire to commit a sin, but does not commit it?’
‘Umar replied,
‘He who feels desire to commit a sin, but does not commit it, (they are the ones whose hearts Allāh has tested for Taqwā.
For them is forgiveness and a great reward.)”’

Shaykh 'Abd Al-Ilāh al-Juhanī :
📍...The rights of Allāh is above the rights of anything else & there is no obedience to the creation in disobedience to the Creator.
- No doubt this is from putting the Pleasure of Allāh above the pleasure of anyone else,
-What can be mentioned in this regard is the story of when S’ad b. Abī Waqqās became Muslim.
- His mother wanted him to leave Islām and she told him that either he leaves his dīn or she will not eat or drink until she dies
-then he will be looked down upon and cursed regarding her and it will be said to him that he is the killer of his mother.
- S’ad said to her: My mother, do not do so. I am not going to leave my dīn for anything.
- His mother stayed for a day and night without eating or drinking until she became tired.
- She woke up the next day and did not see him change and stayed another day and night until it took a greater toll upon her
- He said: O my mother,by Allāh,if you had 100 souls and each one of them came out of you one after the other I will never leave this dīn
- so if you want, eat and if you want, do not eat
- When she saw her son so firm upon his dīn she went ahead and ate because she knew he would never leave his dīn
-and he was seeking the Pleasure of Allāh beyond that of any creation
-Regarding companionship and whomever you mingle with, the rights of Allāh is consistently above the rights of any of His creation
- If your companion or colleague enter into something that is against the Sharī’ah you must fulfill the right of advising them first
- then fulfill the right of negating what they are doing of wrong against the dīn and do not compromise with them.
- So do not think that you are doing them a favour by remaining silent.
-Not forbidding them from wrong is entering into what Allāh has forbidden and no doubt this is munkar
- and it is for this reason that the curse of Allāh was upon Banī Isrā`īl due to what they did regarding this matter.

The 3 afflictions which daily affect every human being:
Everyday and every night, the children of Aadam are affected by the 3 afflictions. Not a day goes by except that they are afflicted by all the 3 of them.

THE FIRST AFFLICTION:
His lifespan is reduced everyday. He does not care much about his lifespan being reduced, but if there is any reduction in his wealth, he starts worrying. What he forgets is that wealth is recoverable but not the lifespan.

Everyday he consumes the sustenance provided to him by Allaah. If it is Halaal, he will be questioned about it [Surah al-Takaathur (102): 8]. But if it is through Haraam means, then he will be punished for it; and no one knows the extent of the punishment except Allaah.

THE THIRD AFFLICTION:
Everyday he is nearing the Aakhirah by some distance; while at the same time he is being distanced from this worldly life by some distance. But his concern for the EVERLASTING HEREAFTER is nothing as compared to his concern for this FLEETING WORLD. He does not know if his abode will be the highest station in Paradise or the lowest depths of Hell.

Question: What is the ruling on using some perfumes that contain some alcohol?
Answer: Praise be to Allaah.
The basic principle is that the perfumes which are commonly used among people are permissible, unless we find out that they contain some substance that make it disallowed for us to use them, such if it is an intoxicant, or a large amount would cause intoxication, or it contains some najaasah (impure substance) and so on.
But the basic principle is that the perfumes which are commonly used are permissible, such as 'ood, amber, musk, etc. But if a person finds out that a certain perfume contains something that would rule out its use, such as an intoxicating or impure substance, then he should not use it.
This includes cologne because it is has been proven by the testimony of doctors that it is not free of intoxicants; it contains a large amount of alcohol, which is an intoxicant, so we should not use it, unless we find a kind of cologne that is free of that. There are enough perfumes among the kinds that Allaah has permitted to us that we have no need of that kind, praise be to Allaah.
The same applies to every kind of food and drink which contains intoxicants - we should refrain from consuming them. The basic principle is that whatever causes intoxication in large amounts, a small amount of it is haraam, as the Messenger (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) said:
"Whatever causes intoxication in large amounts, a small amount of it is haraam." [Narrated by an-Nasaa'ee in al-Ashribah, 5607; Ibn Maajah, al-Ashribah, 3394]
And Allaah is the Source of strength.
