Trailing the Hem of a Garment for a Woman – Shaykh al-Albaani
Hadeeth No. 460 from Silsilah Ahadeeth as-Saheehah
By the Muhadith, Allama, Ash-Shaykh Muhammad Nasir ud-Deen al-Albaani
Translated By Abbas Abu Yahya
“On the authority of Umm Salamah: that when the Messenger of Allaah -SallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam – said what he said about trailing the hem of a garment for the woman.
Umm Salamah mentions: then I asked: O Messenger of Allaah! How should we trail the hem of a garment?
He said: Trail it by a hand span.
Umm Salamah said: But the feet become uncovered!
Then he said: Then trail it a forearms length.”
I (al-Albaani) say: In this hadeeth there is a proof showing that the feet of a woman are ‘Awrah (i.e. those parts of the body that must be covered) and this was a matter that was well known amongst the women at the time of the Prophet sall’Allaahu alayhi wasallam.
Since, when the Prophet said: ‘Trail it by a hand span,’ Umm Salaamah said: “Then the feet become uncovered” and from this, one feels that she knew that the feet are from the ‘Awrah. It is not permissible to uncover them and the Prophet – SallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam – reaffirmed that for her and that is why he commanded her to trail her garment a forearm’s length.
In the Noble Qur’aan there is a reference to this fact and that is the saying of Allaah Ta’aala: <<And let them not stamp their feet so as to reveal what they hide of their adornment>> [Soorah Noor: 31]

Shaykh al-Albaani was asked a question regarding trailing the hem of the Hijaab for the woman: “Is it a condition that it should trail by a hand span or a forearm’s length?”
The shaykh answered by saying: “This condition is if the clothing of a woman was like the clothing of the women in the past, i.e. because the women before used to only wear a Kamees (long dress) i.e. like a thobe. This means they did not wear a sirwaal (like pyjamas) nor socks, nor anything that would cover her shins nor her feet, except this long kamees which used to be dragged along the floor, which is generally known as the Abaya. Nowadays if a woman wears socks or perhaps a long sirwaal, even though this is not common, then it is sufficient for the jilbaab to cover the top of her feet. It is not necessary for the hem of the garment to be dragging along the floor except in the situation when she cannot find, from her clothing, the likes of a sirwaal or socks etc. because, verily the Messenger – alayhis sallam- ordered her to lengthen her garment fearing that anything of the ‘Awrah of her feet or shins be uncovered. So, if they are covered with clothing or socks and over the top of them is the long Jilbaabthen it is not necessary, in this situation, for the hem of the garment to be dragging along the floor.
Questioner: May Allaah reward you
The Shaykh: May Allaah preserve you.
Questioner: So it is understood from your speech, that there is no problem if the shoes become uncovered or some of the socks are shown?
The Shaykh: No, I said to you that the Jilbaab should cover the top of the feet. Then you also mentioned shoes, the condition for the shoes is that they shouldn’t be decorated, because nowadays most women’s shoes are decorated.
Questioner: May Allaah reward you
The Shaykh: May Allaah preserve you.

Question:
السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
Would you please tell me that what’s the advice of the kibaar ulema regarding those whatsapp group of females which are run by a male admin? The male admin claims that he maintains the shara’i rulings that refrain from any extra talk etc then making this excuse of his. May Allah bless you and reward you with goodness
وعليكم السلام ورحمة الله وبركاته
Shaikh Waleed Boghdady:
The Scholars warn from any mixed groups in WhatsApp (or in any other messaging app). There is a warning from all the Scholars regarding this, because this is a door for fitnah. The only situation where it is allowed is when a Scholar puts beneficial articles or is teaching, then the women can be in this group to benefit from these articles. Otherwise it is not allowed.
If the situation is as it has been mentioned in the question, then this man is opening a big door for fitnah, because the admin of a female group should be a female. For example, if he wants to advise any of the female members of the group regarding any wrong think she posted, for example a weak hadith, he will need to talk to her privately. He is obviously opening a door to fitnah and violating the rules, so he has to remove himself immediately and if he does not do this, you have to leave this group.

Can you share Hadith without providing the reference? -Shaykh Fawzaan
Question: Is it permissible to share Ahadith of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, through means of communication (internet, cell phone, apps, etc) without checking the authenticity of the hadith?
Answer: No, it is not permissible for you to share hadith except that the authenticity are checked. (This is done) by returning to the collections of the Sunnah, knowing who from the Imaams narrated it, and the book that it is in. Is it from an authentic collection or not? It is required to clarify this to the people so they will not be deceived.

The Importance of Reference – Shaykh Albaani
Shaykh Albaani, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said:
The Scholars have said:
“From the signs that one is blessed in his knowledge is him referring points of benefits to the founder of it”
(such as the author or a reference to where one got the benefit from)
Because in doing that one frees himself from plagiarism as it has been brought to attention by the Prophet, alaihi as salaatu wa salaam, in his statement:
“The one being satisfied with that which he has not been given is as a person wearing two garments of deception”.
Agreed upon by al Bukaari and Muslim.

The scholars say: The believer takes up an easy, gentle approach in his call [to Allāh] as [his] initial course, and he may find a need for harshness. So when a hand is washed, it's washed gently--as an initial course--but some things may get stuck to it that require some harsh scrubbing.
So the one who comes and says, "No, no, don't scrub your hands harshly," [that means] it will remain dirty all the time.

Eat and Drink but waste not by EXTRAVAGANCE!
-------------------------------------------------------
Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):
“and eat and drink but waste not by extravagance, certainly He (Allah) likes not Al-Musrifoon (those who waste by extravagance)”
[al-A ‘raaf 7:31].
It was narrated that Miqdaam ibn Ma‘di Karib said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam) say:
“The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat a few mouthfuls to keep him standing upright. But if he must (fill it), then one third for his food, one third for his drink, and one third for his breathing.”
[Narrated by at-Tirmidhi, 2380; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in as-Silsilah as-Saheehah, 2265]
Some of the salaf (early generations of Muslims) said: Allah summed up all of medicine in half a verse (interpretation of the meaning): “and eat and drink but waste not by extravagance” [al-A ‘raaf 7:31].
[End quote from Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 3/406]
Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said, concerning what we learn from the verse quoted above:
Here Allah commands His slaves to consume food and drink that will maintain the body and replenish energy, and tells them that it should be of sufficient quantity and quality to benefit the body; if it goes beyond that, then it is extravagance, and both are detrimental to health and cause disease – I mean not eating and drinking, or being extravagant in that regard. Maintaining good health is all summed up in these few divine words.
